Oh wow. I think keeping the rear brake locked on impact was the thing my technique is missing. Very Useful tutorial, Ali! Adding to the 'start small': Even if your drop technique is controlled, don't take it to 2+ meters right away. A slightly mistimed landing can put big strain on your lower back, so you can end up injuring your back if the muscles there aren't strong enough yet. At least that's what happened to me when I started riding trials.
This is soo cool! Having you as an example with your over 20 years experience and everything.. You can really see all the small details in your technique.. Well done! And I really appreciate how much work you put in this channel. I've seen your stories on instagram💪 Im glad I found you. It was about 3 years ago and since then, I've learned so much from you and I just want to thank you for that! Keep going😁
A really nice tutorial - already one of my favorites: starting from small drops (where I am now) to big drops (where I want to go). Clear instructions and the amount of repetitions help picturing the whole procedure. Nice work, thank you 👍
I like that crank rotation/foot weighting thing at 7:20. Never thought of that. Helps convert some of the energy forward. Genius! You seem to do it more on two wheel landings.
Great as always Ali. My brain gets on my own tangent sometimes and I pick up small self enforcing bad habits (Personally I keep using power wheelies as a crutch too much) it's really good to hear your thoughts on these intricacies . I really can't understand how you put this down in words sometimes.
Getting better at back hops right now, finally can hop a decent amount of times and with some kind of control haha. After I learn how to open the brake and jump forward, this is gonna be the next thing I learn! At the moment I do wheelie drops mainly, thanks for the awesome tutorial!
Yep great advice I broke a disc in my back doing a very big drop back wheel gave in to :( was long time ago but now my back can go very easy so all ways be careful!!
Ali that's a awesome video. You really are awesome at explaining some riding skills, techniques and so on that I am referring about. Thanks Ali for sharing the moments. It's enjoyable and educational. 😁👍
Just watched it. Great tutorial! I need to go out to try my limits. :D Next could be tips to how to get the max out of your disc brakes, would be cool!
Pleased you liked it :) disc brakes could make a video but it would simply be “buy powerful brakes, big rotors and good pads and don’t get oil on them” 😂
@@Ali_Clarkson yesterday I did went out, on a new spot, and sucked. :D Maybe today, on a better spot... Anyway, than a guide what you'd advice for starters, or budget options, setting up the lever, the calipers, bedding in properly for max braking power. :)
Brilliant tutorial, thanks. I know what I'll be practicing tomorrow. Could you please do one on how to back hop rotate? FYI the slow motion really helps.
amazing video!!🙌 Can't wait to try out that technique with the delay🔥 I'm personally a huge fan of drops, but I tend to land pretty harsh, mostly due to my lack of skill😂 So this could just be the trick for me to unlock the 3m mark and beyond🤟
Smashing tutorial Ali thanks very much. Now could you please do a getting up tutorial please when you have time. Mainly bunny hops, static hops and the like 🤘
Thought the drop on the left was massive for me, but then I saw the one on the right. Following the initial advice, I will park this until I can back hop. Still earns a thumbs up though.
Excellent tutorial Ali! Your tutorials always have really good explanations and demonstrations. I just wish you would knock off the music. It's distracting and washing out your gentle voice. Why not let your viewers decide if they want to have background music. It's a tutorial so can't really be muted...
Thanks, as for the music...I make videos to please others but I also make videos to please me and I personally much prefer a background track, especially with clips with no audio. I thought the sound levels were ok...I actually reduced the music audio a couple of decibels and increased my voiceover just before exporting just to be on the safe side. I’m taking notes but also remember that I can’t please ask the people all the time. I do appreciate the feedback though so don’t feel I’m just ignoring it
Are you aware of how you use your stomach muscles on landings, or for that matter on bunny hops? A trials rider once told me that a bunny hop starts with a powerful push from the abdomen and I've under understood what that meant. It is possible to lift the front wheel without using the arms to lift relative to your center, by focusing on bringing your stomach in and back; this probably causes you to push down and forward into the pedals.
Untucking or stretching your legs out is what absorbs the impact. Do it at the right time and you smooth out the landing. Look at skaters ollieing huge gaps. No amount of pushing down on a bike whilst in the air will slow down the speed that your body drops at.
@@pympin87 don't do this...but, imagine just stepping off that big wall and keeping your body straight. No way you are walking away without injury. Crouch down lean forward and push off a bit then extend your legs. Do this right and your head is probably now at the height your feet used the be at and your feet are 5 feet below ready to soak up a 4 foot drop. Hard to explain. Look for massive back flip drops on youtube. They fall back then flip over therfore making the drop smaller.
I think it’s more to do with how well your body copes with impacts rather than actually physically reducing the impact itself. Just think how much more force you can put into a punch if you extend your arm just before the impact rather than swinging with a straight arm... same thing applies here
@@Ali_Clarkson i was just thinking of the old ... every action has an equal and opposite reaction ... as much force you use to push the bike away is also pushing you up away from the bike ... tho the effect is probably tiny because of the weight difference between you and the bike
hey Ali! i just saw this listing on fb market place and it looked like an old trials bike frame that has been modified to have a seat post. Seller says it's a gt mountain bike frame but isn't sure about the details since he bought it 2nd hand. Is there anyone who can help me figure this out since it's selling for really cheap (PHP1,200/25USD). If ever it is a modified trials bike, I plan on just cutting off the modified seatpost and rebuilding the thing.
I actually don’t know, I haven’t measured ones when out riding but too be honest I don’t usually seek out huge drops when riding as the risk-reward usually isn’t worth it (unless it’s a great line worthy of an edit)...I’d say the drop I do in the Drop And Roll shows is up there with my highest at over 11ft, I think it’s possible to add a few more ft to that and still be ok but for daily shows that’s as high as I’m comfortable to do regularly

Well done tutorial Ali! That was definitely worth all that edit time and having Euan come out.
Thanks! I’m pleased with the outcome :)
Right we all know what I'll be learning tomorrow. Great tutorial. Thank you from North Yorkshire England
Was out riding trials with a friend and had a notification from Yt, now im home and can watch this video😁
Very good Tutorial !

It’s good that my bars snapped before your tutorial😂
I really like the slow motion shots! Perfect 👌🏼

Glad I can help! 😎
Great explanation! I probably have to work on getting closer to the edge to lower my front wheel. Good work on the voice over! Keep it up!
Give it a try and report back 😁
basicly a satifying super duper slow motion video !
I ride FGFS but i still learn and practice the skills you demonstrate!
Good to hear!
Perfect Tutorial for me. I've startet riding street trials 1 month ago.
Great to hear! I hope you have a rad time 👊🏻
Thanks for sharing your 24 years of experience! 😎👍
Cracking tutorial as always mate. Clear and concise, no fucking around. Great stuff.
Feels like the DIY brake pad tutorial is ok now 😀
Haha you might have a point 😂
Another FANTASTIC technique video! Great stuff, Ali!!!
Thank you so much Ali! There is a drop of 2.5 meter I wantend to do and now I'm finally convinced to do it!
Thanks for the photos. I did enjoy

Nice!!! I am still can't do this constantly. Thus have to be off from riding since i see cracks on my frame...$aving time for new frame...
Didn't know you could do this, grabbed my sons bike and tried it off the garage roof, please send flowers and cards to ward 8A.
I was counting the minutes to see this video😁
I hope it was worth it 👍🏻
So i just need to get my bike on my roof now😅
Good luck! :D
Exactly 😂
My 2 foot drop will be done with style, if I add 20 more years of practice for my 5 foot drop I would be 70 then :) thanks Ali
Hay I have a qweston what tricks do you recommend to learn frst great videos I always look forward to watching them
Trackstanding
Yep, trackstands are vital and I’d say learning to pivot is second then backhops third 👍🏻
Ok thank you for the advice I appreciate it
I hope you do catch me next time. The last time you didn't and I fell and broke my collarbone.
When Ali puts out vids like these, that help my riding and potentially save my @ss, I make a PayPal donation. Hope you fellow riders do the same!

I actually like the soft music for these, kind of ties it all together, I’m with you in other videos though.
Were you riding the yaabaa around when you did your ankle?
No, I was on my red Hex riding at wood fest in Wales... but now you mention the Yabbaa did I hurt myself on that too?
@@Ali_Clarkson I vaguely remember having a similar injury at the same sort of time.
Do you have any quick tip for drops to manual??
Well knowing it’s taken you that long I’ll be kind to my self if I’m not doing 11 footers by the end of the season.

No, I’m not thinking about my stomach at all so can’t help you there I’m afraid
Meraviglioso Ali
i wonder if un-tucking just before impact helps because pushing the bike away is slowing your bodies momentum slightly

My biggest mind block doing tricks is not wanting to break anything on my bike I can barely afford 😂
Brake levers completely inboard of the grips will save the knuckles.
I made a point of dropping my 2m height. I think that's the highest I've done.
