    This is great! I was going to hire someone to replace the small pane in my bedroom that my dog with the huge butt decided to sit against. She was fine. Most of the window is on the ground outside. Note to self, don't put bed against window while having a 90 dog in the family. Furniture is now rearranged and I'm going to put in the window! Thanks!

    What do you mean by 7/5?on my rulers a quarter inch would 6/8. It would be 31 by 6/8. I get confused when you say 7/5. Please help

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sorry for confusion I was saying 75 as in 0.75 or 3/4. So you want to measure the opening of the window and subtract 1/4 inch or 0.25 from each side. So if the opening is 30in x 20 in, get the glass cut size 29.75 x 19.75 inches. Good luck, hope this made sense

      Thanks i put in the glass my self for the first time and my dad helped. All went well but my dad crack the glass a little putting in thos little metal clips to hold the glass in. He cracked it putting in the clip on the right side of window frame. It was our last clip to and it would have been done with no cracks if it wasnt for the last mistake. Lol i felt like a pro until we cracked it at the end of our job lol. Next time if i ever do it again im do it with out the clips just use the sealant. Thanks for vid and Reply.

    • @JonnyDIY

    Can this be done in the wintertime or better in spring/summer?

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be done in Winter, just make sure you check the label on the type of caulking sealant or glazing compound for the temperature youre supposed to apply. So youd want to do it in the warmest part of day. And a tip is make sure you keep it stored inside somewhere warm before applying.

    We have an old window that I’m looking to replace the glass but don’t see any points

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The points are underneath the glazing. Once you chip and remove it youll see them. You just push the points into the wood flush against the glass. Not too tight against though. Dont want to crack or chip glass 😀👍

  • @steelcityreseller8170
    @steelcityreseller8170 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Good video! But I have a question. You take a 1/4" off the measurement so there's an 1/8" gap all the way around but then it looks like you put the window in so it's actually resting on the bottom of the pane. Wouldn't that mean now there's no gap at the bottom and 1/4" gap at the top? Is that OK?

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's ok still. It's just to allow space for expansion and contraction with the changing of the seasons 👍 it should still be able to move with the flexible sealant. You just don't want the glass to be a perfect fit or it'll break when expands

    any advice on replacing a window on the 2nd floor? can it be done from the inside ?

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the window sash isnt removable or its on fixed portion it may be tricky to do. If older wood frame window the metal push points need to be installed from outside. If newer type window you could apply sealer to frame and pull window in against it and tape it to frame while drying so doesnt fall out. You will need to buy window suction cup with handle to achieve the inward pull 👍🏻

    • @yomman123
      @yomman123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonnyDIY I have an older woodframe, so no way of avoiding the need to install and seal it from the outside? So I assume scaffolding or a ladder will be required. Did I understand correctly? Thank you for being so responsive!!

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The inside edge is smaller than the glass, so glass gets pressed against it. If you use glazing no need to put any behind glass but if you use sealant you can run a bead around before putting glass in to give it some extra seal 👍🏻

    Hey I have a rather dumb question but this is a real question. My home window broke and the contractor is claiming the same amount of money to replace annealed glass as tempered glass even though tempered glass is twice as expensive as annealed glass. He claims this is because annealed glass tends to break during installation and therefore costs more (in labor) to install even though the glass itself is so much cheaper. I am not that handy so can you help me please ? Is he BS-ing or telling the truth ? Is there any reason why it would cost just as much to install annealed glass as tempered glass ?
    Please help !!!

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem. Tempered glass should be more expenisive of a job than regular "annealed" glass. Get another quote from a window and glass shop to compare prices. He may just have a set fee he charges for either or to cover his expenses like he says. It is very easy to break a non tempered sheet of glass upon installation. But another quote will solve the problem, his price may be close

    • @gayatriprakash6724
      @gayatriprakash6724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonny DIY thank you so much ! This is where the plot thickens. I am getting the materials from him and he was supposed to do an installation as well. I am a renter in an apartment that is owned by a corporate landlord and this guy is their "preferred contractor". They (leasing agent) are giving me a really hard time about comparison shopping. Should I just ask him why he's charging yue same fee even though annealed glass is $3 per square ft as opposed to tempered glass as $6 per square ft ? Also this is California so maybe things are "strange" here lol
      Any advise for me ?

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im here in CA too so Im familiar with all the craziness haha...Hmm well if youre having to pay to fix the rental window Im assuming it was your fault for the damage. I would still call and get a quote (just give them window opening measurement) from another reputable window place & if it differs by a lot you've got a case to hire them. It may end up being very close in price. A smaller piece of glass like the window I replaced in this video cost around $20 so even at double it would only be $40. But I know sometimes its harder & costs a bit to get small jobs like this done (especially in big cities) unless a handyman type does it, just because of the time coming out and doing it. So I would just follow through on another quote & give yourself some peace of mind, so you don't feel like you're getting ripped off.
