Hi! Quite new to your community but loving the videos and dreaming of my own Van and my own Occy one day in the future!
Max is right about the mountain colors, its all due to the minerals within the sediment making up the mountain that it has such a unique coloring. The Andes formed due to a tectonic activity so its environmental conditions were completely unique during formation providing it the rare minerals, iron oxide rust (red), iron sulfide (yellow and orange), chlorite (turquoises and greens).
The Geology Hub Blog has some more info about them for anyone interested :-) geologyhubblog.wordpress.com/2017/09/22/the-rainbow-mountain-of-peru/
P.S. I'm not a science nerd, just a Geography teacher with an interest in Geology! :-P

The colors have formed because of ice that used to cover the area. When it started to melt, the water mixed with minerals in the ground, turning the earth into the many colors. Red areas are due to rust mixtures, yellows are due to iron sulfide, purples are from goethite or oxidized limonite, and the greens come from chlorite.

Just came across your video’s after hearing of the passing of Lee.
I was in Peru in April 2019. Machu Picchu was amazing. I also saw the painted mountain, just a spectacular trip.
So sad to see this beautiful soul leave this earth!!
HOW DIFFICULT it must be for All those she has touched! My condolences.
Rest in peace beautiful Lee! 🙏😘

Oh Max. I am not sure you will read this as it is 3 years past when you posted it. I have only recently found you guys but have been a huge fan of Kingin It and Bec/Eamon. Through them I learned of what happened to Lee. I must say I feel the loss of the opportunity to meet such an amazing spirit deeply. I have watched many videos of the two of you ...many more yet to see...but in this one, seeing her joy through it all but especially towards the end...my heart is broken. I can see in her eyes how her heart was overflowing with love for you and her life. I thank God that you have these memories and pics/videos to remind you of the good times. Know you are treasured. God Bless you.

Hi Lee and Max, thanks again for taking me along to Peru. I love how you calculated your arrival for your hike and your camping stop along the River. My cousin is in Peru with her daughter and I see her photos on FB. They went some of the same places as you all, but there were always crowds around. Another pro for van travels. Other highlights were the opening shots, village views, the colors of Peru, sweet Occy and how tuned in he was to his surroundings and the Occycam. Be well and travel safely.

Layers of shale, the geologic term for mud that was deposited in a bay or low energy environment where the mud was able to accumulate at different times and with different minerals which created the variegated color layers.
What got them up here to 13,000 feet?
Plate tectonics, which pushed the rocks up at an angle. We are seeing the rock formations at an angle, kinda like looking at a slice of layered cake that tipped over.

Another wonderful video of your amazing travels in the van with beautiful Occy. Yes it is truly a stunning part of South America. The memories of my time thirty years ago travelling in my 1969 VW campervan come flooding back. I washed myself in every stream that I came across in those days. I also did not know about geology back then but certainly studied it upon my return to Australia and I would highly recommend that you find out if there is something on your audible podcast about geology in particular South American geology because you will appreciate so much more the magnificence of South America. I wanted to travel in my campervan all my life because the freedom of life experiences is THE most wonderful attribute to such travel. The person(s) who stole my uninsured van in Seville Spain destroyed my dream! And moving on was difficult to readjust to normal life as even you both will find eventually when you need to readjust back to normality after your travels. So enjoy every adventure every day while you can. And may good fortune stay with you and Occy.

Guys. I strongly recommend the lesser-travelled northern route to Kuélap, the 'other Machu Piccu' via Chachapoyas . From there you can drive down to Trapoto (of the famous Harry Potter quidditch team) and on to the Amazon and Yurimaguas on the river. From there, there is marvellous 3 day freight-boat trip to Iquitos. From there you could fly back to collect the van or take a high-speed boat back to Yurimaguas. Great footage of the Andes and the river trip to be got and largely gringo-free.

The different colouration is due to different environmental conditions and mineralogy when the sediment was originally deposited and subsequently diagenetically altered. Red colouration of sedimentary layers often indicates iron oxide rust as a trace mineral. Introduction of goethite or oxidized limonite will introduce brownish colouration to sandstones. The bright yellow colouration could be due to iron sulphide as trace minerals. The varying shades of green colour depend on chlorite in different diagenetic states and concentrations

Hey guys! I hope your adventures are going nice and steady; you feed us every Sunday with more and more places to add in to the bucket list!
There are many archaeological sites to go in Peru, any on your list for the upcoming videos?
It would be great to see all those markets in depth along with the local variety of veggies, could be a great addition to the cuisine and channel ^^
Have a great day guys! Regards from Scotland!

It's my 3 fave Vanlifers. Max, Lee, and Occy :) I was just at the vet with my kitty getting her vaccinations updated and there was a flea prevention ad on the wall that immediately brought Occy to mind. I really miss having a dog in my life (not that I don't love my kitty very much) and love watching your wonderful adventures as I dream of getting a van and traveling. My mom loves alpacas so now Peru is on the list for taking her on an adventure sometime in the future.

Hi guys. I believe the red colouring is rust from iron oxide and the yellow/orange is iron sulphide.
Rainboo is correct if you speak Canadian Max. You need to get oot more.
Enjoy the fine weather because the further south you go, the wetter it gets. Mind you, I have been in Santiago too late for the winter rains but it can snow in the city. Safe travels

    Hey Max, Lee and Occy,
I have been kind of puzzled since you've been in Peru, and now maybe I know why. I spent a few months in 1994 and 1995/96 hiking through South America's jungles with 2 jungle guides. I wrote about this previously in a few comments.
So, since you've been in Peru I have been wondering where exactly you were because everywhere you've shown is like a desert. I don't remember any parts of Peru being like that. Everywhere was lush green everywhere!!!
I've heard of the Rainbow Hills in recent years, and thought to myself that I never heard of them until about 3 or 4 years ago. Lee, your comment about the Rainbow Hills being only a recent attraction because the hills used to be under glaciers......... BOOM.......it hit me. Those rolling Green Hills of Jungle Forests....they are now deserts??????????? If this is true.......that would be like a dull dagger to my heart. One of my most amazing visual memories was walking out of the jungle into the rolling hills of lush jungle forest, with the Machu Piccu white limestone structures on the hills in a valley, glaring in the sun like they were the sun itself. That area, for days, was where I had some very amazing spiritual awakenings, not in a religious way, but in a personal way. It was in the Jungles leading to Machu Piccu, and if that is gone...... damn, what a truly sad loss it would be. I feel heartbroken thinking that may be why none of what you have shown in videos of Peru so far seem familiar to me. It was Peru and Argentina that I spent most of the time hiking when I was there both times, Chile was probably the other place I spent the most time in other than Peru and Argentina.
If my fears are true.....and that jungle forest is gone........not to sound like an alarmist, but if those jungles are gone, then the planet really is not in a good situation. And it would be so sad because of the Diversity of animals and plants that were there would now be gone forever. I truly hope that's not so. And I hope you get to Machu Piccu, to the rolling hills of Lush Green Jungle Forest (Rain Forest). It's a truly beautiful place that neither pictures or videos could ever capture the beauty of what it is. I also hope if you do trek where I have, that you show some video of it so I can see it and know that it's not gone.
Thanks for your travels and helping me relive one of the best parts of my life by being in some of the same places I have been on my hiking through South America.

Matt, as someone who has lived in Peru for a few years, you can rest assured that there is much of the country still covered in Rainforest both mountain and basin. Many people come to Peru and only visit the mountains or the jungle area, but there has always been many desert areas as well.... Mostly a bit inland from the Pacific Ocean before you reach the mountains. You can see this in places like Huacachina and Paracas, but there are many more places as well. The Nazca lines are a good example and if they weren't in the deserts we wouldn't have been able to find them. I don't intend to minimize the risks that logging are presenting the country. The Amazon region is being cut at alarming rates and the effect that would have is global.

@@BrettBodkinsPhotography WHewwww, Thanks Brett, That's a great relief to know! I guess I never saw any desert when I was there, most likely because I was hiking through Rainforest Jungle, not sand dunes. I didn't even see sand.

@@comedianmattrossey Yes, I live in Pucallpa, the first port city on the way into the Amazon. There's alot of jungle, but definitely it's threatened... Not as badly as the glaciers though...
