    Great explanation of the Knoxville format which is hard to crack. The good news is the track prep at Knoxville is generally excellent. I'm not sure how critical the pill draw is to being able to set quick time. Because of the points system, setting quick time is critical. I was there when Steve Kinser achieved either a perfect score or nearly perfect score. Also he was able to pass 8 cars in his heat from the back before turn one which was amazing. He went to the top outside immediately after passing the start cone and passed the entire field. I saw it with my own eyes. This was before there were bleachers on the opposite side of the track, and before the Sprint Car Hall of Fame was built.
    My first trip to Knoxville was the 25th running of the race. I was also there when three cars went over the fence and landed next to the restroom outside of turn one. As for the Knoxville format, I guess it puts a premium on the driver's skill, not simply the parts in the car. The jinx in the whole deal is tire quality and ignition box reliability. Whatever, the Knoxville Nationals is a fantastic event, and the area is a great place to visit. You are lucky to be there. As I have stated before, your commentary is stellar. It's very valuable for sprint car fans.

    A perfect 500 points has been scored ten times. The first was Tim Green in 1979. Steve Kinser is the only driver to score a perfect 500 more than once (4). In 1990 a perfect 500 was scored on both Wednesday and Thursday (Steve and Mark Kinser). The drivers to score 500 points are Tim Green (1979), Mike Brooks (1980), Steve Kinser (81, 89, 90, 92), Sammy Swindell (84), Doug Wolfgang (85), Mark Kinser (90), and David Gravel(2017).

    Format should not change its made to be hard to win and always has been, new era drivers dont deserve to have training wheels on to win the Nationals, New era allready gets spoon fed double file restarts/lapped cars have to go to the rear and they get two flights of qualifying all the time, so to win the Nationals its good that old school rules apply that way the winner of the Nationals is deemed worthy for having to actually race and they earned it the right way the hard way the way many Champions of the sport had to. It should not be different just because everybody and anybody with money can go to the sprint car walmart and win off the pole against a guy who is starting 8th. Race and get it done its possible because many others before the 2024 Champion of the race had to🏁🏁🏁🏁

    Thanks for the video. Will all of the preliminary features on Saturday (E,D,C, etc) starting positions be started straight up based on preliminary night points, or is there any kind invert in those races?
    I really like this format. The only real tweek I’d make is dividing the qualifying into “A” and “B” groups on Wednesday and Thursday. With the amount of points up for grabs just on qualifying alone, qualifying bad can really set you back based on when you went out. IMO, with 50+ cars each of those nights, just makes sense to me to have two flights of qualifying on Wed/Thu. Other than that, I really like this format.

      On Saturday night, everything starts straight up by points. I know the point deal has been that way since the 70's on Qualifying nights. That's why it's the #1 Sprint Car Race on Earth.

    Question - we know Knoxville always has great track prep, why are drivers allowed to change tires at the halfway stop? Has that always been like that or did it used to be different and eventually too many tires issues aided in a rule change for that?

    • @TheRaudmanRundown
      @TheRaudmanRundown  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great question that I do not have the answer too, wish they didn’t change tires tho

      Sprint Car Rear tires will only last for around 30 - 35 laps Max. Knoxville Nationals is the only race racing 50 laps I think. Their fuel tanks won't hold enough fuel either. I worked on Sprints at Knoxville back in the 70's and 80's, back then they used 1 gal. per lap.

    • @joewirth8646
      @joewirth8646 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@billschaefer3818 Not disregarding a fuel stop because I know they'd need that but we just watched sprint cars have gone 55 laps at Pevely before (I think 2022 went caution free for 55). Granite it's not 1:1 for Knoxville because the tracks are different but I wish they could do it.

    • @billschaefer3818
      @billschaefer3818 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joewirth8646 Was them 55 lap deals a World of Outlaw race or just a big local deal race? A caution free race, your tires will last longer because when they cool down during a caution and the drivers will light them up a few times just before it goes green again. Dirt tires need cleaned up just like Indy and NASCAR tires. Tire Companies play with their tires just like racers do. They want them winning just like the teams do. When Goodyear first started making these balloon tires, they had a big sticker on them - MAX INFLATE PRESSURE 35 pounds. they would blow up if you over-filled them. I know for a fact that they would blow up if you did it. Soft tires wins races-tire compounds and air pressure wins on any track.
