I have 2 theories about why Sunny doesn't talk: 1: After not audibly talking for 4 years of course he couldn't form a sentence without clearing his throat for like 2 minutes straight, now you might think "bUT hE saID PIZza DeLiVEry" but that wasn't on the first day where he couldn't talk which means maybe he got used back to talking in the first day. 2. Sunny is just too shocked to even compute what is happening around him to talk. He's shown to be having trouble with understanding which world is which with headspace mobs just being in the real world until you interact with them which makes them disappear and he rightfully has trouble showing emotion. TL:DR: lil bro deserves a hug

Sunny is a mute. He didn’t lose his ability to speak, as in the game, OMORI himself speaks out a sad poem, so sunny CAN speak but only if he chooses too, as in the good ending scene
Yeah me too, at the time of playing I found it really frustrating and stuck out as one of my few gripes with the game. Obviously now I know the whole narrative, it makes sense that Sunny felt unsafe or overwhelmed being in there with Basil, so couldn't find it in him to comfort Basil and fled; I just think the fact that it forced the player themselves to be the one to eventually leave the room made me feel like I was doing something wrong. If it had made Sunny walk out on his own that would have frustrated me less because I spent like 20 minutes in there interacting with everything over and over to try and help Basil.

We entered Basil's bathroom, we saw his struggle and later we tried to change a few things in there but couldn't because sunny still doesn't have a clear picture clueless and uncomfortable you realise that it's best to leave for now

I think I’m literally the only person who played Omori and didn’t even go to the door during the night. When Sunny woke up the next morning I literally thought Kel had been knocking for hours 💀

I myself have selective mutism that was brought on by trauma, I was actually around the age Sunny was when Mari died for the majority of that trauma. So honestly, Sunny having selective mutism makes a lot of sense, especially considering he has barely been around other people in the last four years and he has plenty of other mental illnesses after Mari's death.
Takes me back to high school when one of my best friends had selective mutism and never once spoke to me, not til years later when we met up again. It's fun to think of all the good times we had with him writing me notes, pointing at things, making hand gestures, and laughing while he quickly covered his face to hide it.
True route Sunny shapes up into a REALLY strong person if you think about it like how many of us would be able to come to terms with all those things and overcome them, nevermind CONFESS your most dreadful and horrifying secret to your friends? I know I wouldn't. Something I found interesting is how Sunny's hallucinations at home are purely negative and fearful, while they're simply (most likely) positive memories when outside. Really drives in the fact that Sunny just doesn't feel comfortable in his own house anymore after what happened in it. And going outside really does help distract him even better than sleeping can.
something that destroys me about this game is just how avoidable and (in the grand scheme of things) unimportant mari and sunny’s fight was, and i think mari’s voice coming back to guide sunny in calming down and focusing really highlights that. if he had just calmed down and focused in that moment… mari would be alive. i don’t mean this in a blame way, for the record but imagine accidentally killing a beloved family member and having THEIR voice come back to guide you to work on the skills that caused their death, christ
What really makes me emotional during final duet, is the fact that, the piano represents mari, the violent represents Sunny. It begins with the piano, with the violin slowly fading n. I interpret this as Mari being older. As the violin get louder, and they reach the same volume, this is when Sunny and Mari are in those blissful days with their freinds and practicing. But later... the violin is leagues louder than the violin, Sunny has moved past Mari, and the piano returns at the end, after... Sunny accepts what he did, and remembers Mari. Thats why this piece is beautiful.
1:41:20 You can also physically see how Sunny has improved by his eyes (well now one eye-), before he had no pupils/no reflection and now he has pupils/light reflection. Don’t know why but when people are depressed in animes they have no reflection of light in their eyes, and here as the anime protagonist he is he has changed and got his emotions back (externally). Also HE FINALLY TALKS AFTER 30 YEARS (other than that pizza minigame)
I think the idea behind the depressed anime eyes trope is a way of physically showing the idea of a person having "lifeless eyes" or "no light in their eyes". Eyes are so heavily connotated with emotion and to those who believe in it the soul, it makes sense that turning phrases that usually aren't literal (and generally just mean the eyes have a glassed over/depressed/not all there look) into a physical trait is so effective in storytelling!
I personally think Sunny was intentionally coded to be autistic, selective mutism and variable verbality is very common in autistic people, you could argue it's a trauma response for Sunny but he never talks in the flashbacks either, and at one point Basil speaks for him after asking him a question in the rain flashback, the only words we know for a fact he says are "pizza delivery", "wow", and "I need to tell you something", the first two are fairly simple and short and the last one was a very emotionally tense moment where he was likely desperate to express himself, over all he's extremely quiet and keeps to himself a lot when they're all hanging out, and it comes off less as shyness and more as him being non/semi-verbal and preferring parallel play he has a flat affect before Mari's death as shown in many of the photos, though it likely got worse after the fact, another common autistic trait but also something that can arise or worsen due to depression, he made one or two other facial expressions in the photos but by the time the game starts he probably doesn't emote at all Sunny clearly dissociates through a large part of the game, even the scrapped text in the files for photo of hopelessness describes him shutting down and entering a dissociative state, autistic people often have higher levels of dissociation from a young age than allistics and default to it as a coping mechanism, one could even argue white space looks the way it does as a way to prevent overstimulation, leaving a blank room with very little to do, and thus very little to overwhelm him finally, in the scrapped descriptions for the first several photos of the truth, Sunny goes into detail about his frustration with the violin, forcing himself to practice even though he was hurting his fingers, causing him to mess up more and only get more frustrated, as an autistic person reading that text hit way too close to home, this form of self harm done through pushing ourselves past our limit is all too common, mostly because it's taught to us, in the description for photo of a wall Sunny admits he can't focus and is overcome, and later that he can only hold onto his rage, this to me reads clearly as a meltdown brought about by his own insecurities and self-loathing combined with the physical pain of overexerting himself, he also says he doesn't understand why Mari is yelling at him or what she's saying, this could be caused by a combination of both his heightened emotional state and his difficulty with following her thought process due to their different neurotypes, Sunny is overwhelmed and Mari getting angry at him is only making it worse but he isn't able to express that, leading to an outburst as he attempts to get away, and we all know how that ended I think the topic got away from me a little at the end there but I hope I wrote at least a few somewhat comprehensible sentences, and now that I've dumped a miniature essay into this comment section I will retire to my bedchambers for the evening

One thing I’m surprised you didn’t bring up was the fact the fact that if you inspect Mari’s piano it says that the word OMORI is etched into it. I don’t think it’s that important to anything, just a cool detail.
imo i think it's pretty important. his sister's perfectionism stressed him out, and it primarily showed itself through their music playing. naming himself omori after the brand of her piano, after something his sister loved, after the desire for things to be perfect... that fits WAY too perfectly.
Honestly, Omori was probably made partially due to thinking that Mari loved that piano more then him. That could have led to his self loathing by thinking maybe he wanted to hurt her (which of course leads to him thinking he's a monster).

Maybe the biggest reason why a real life adaptation of omori hasnt been made is because the ending is for the player to imagine and its either the director have to get a sensable ending or the director simply leaves it be.
Idk why, but while watching this, the Final Duet hit me harder than it did while actually playing the game (granted i heavily, I MEAN HEAVILY, misunderstood Mari's death and everything going on there, i can be very dense sometimes) but still, it may be because I've processed everything to that point better, but it just feels so much heavier, and this was such a good analysis of Sunny's whole character and development and i am shocked this is not more popular.
I feel like playing the game for the first time is a one time experience but somehow through your incredible video editing and dialogue i almost felt that same wave of emotion at the end just like it was the first time i finished the game. My theory for sunny not speaking is that he has autism, I myself have autism, so does my siblings, my older brother learned how to talk when he was 10, plus his interactions even in the flashback part of the game are extremely similar to the way my brother interacts with his peers

And if I accidentally killed a beloved family member, (example: my mom) then I'd probably want to sleep for 4 years even more. I'd feel just as guilty as Sunny did when he killed Mari. I'd never forgive myself. I guess you and I have different opinions, I dunno. I personally relate to Sunny.

finally, in the scrapped descriptions for the first several photos of the truth, Sunny goes into detail about his frustration with the violin, forcing himself to practice even though he was hurting his fingers, causing him to mess up more and only get more frustrated, as an autistic person reading that text hit way too close to home, this form of self harm done through pushing ourselves past our limit is all too common, mostly because it's taught to us, in the description for photo of a wall Sunny admits he can't focus and is overcome, and later that he can only hold onto his rage, this to me reads clearly as a meltdown brought about by his own insecurities and self-loathing combined with the physical pain of overexerting himself, he also says he doesn't understand why Mari is yelling at him or what she's saying, this could be caused by a combination of both his heightened emotional state and his difficulty with following her thought process due to their different neurotypes, Sunny is overwhelmed and Mari getting angry at him is only making it worse but he isn't able to express that, leading to an outburst as he attempts to get away, and we all know how that ended
I think the topic got away from me a little at the end there but I hope I wrote at least a few somewhat comprehensible sentences, and now that I've dumped a miniature essay into this comment section I will retire to my bedchambers for the evening

One thing I’m surprised you didn’t bring up was the fact the fact that if you inspect Mari’s piano it says that the word OMORI is etched into it. I don’t think it’s that important to anything, just a cool detail.
imo i think it's pretty important. his sister's perfectionism stressed him out, and it primarily showed itself through their music playing. naming himself omori after the brand of her piano, after something his sister loved, after the desire for things to be perfect... that fits WAY too perfectly.
Honestly, Omori was probably made partially due to thinking that Mari loved that piano more then him. That could have led to his self loathing by thinking maybe he wanted to hurt her (which of course leads to him thinking he's a monster).

Maybe the biggest reason why a real life adaptation of omori hasnt been made is because the ending is for the player to imagine and its either the director have to get a sensable ending or the director simply leaves it be.
I like to think that Mari was the voice that told sunny to calm down and to persist. It comforts me to think Mari is always watching over him.
Idk why, but while watching this, the Final Duet hit me harder than it did while actually playing the game (granted i heavily, I MEAN HEAVILY, misunderstood Mari's death and everything going on there, i can be very dense sometimes) but still, it may be because I've processed everything to that point better, but it just feels so much heavier, and this was such a good analysis of Sunny's whole character and development and i am shocked this is not more popular.
I feel like playing the game for the first time is a one time experience but somehow through your incredible video editing and dialogue i almost felt that same wave of emotion at the end just like it was the first time i finished the game. If you played the kazoo version of duet however idk wether i would have been mad you ruined the immersion or die laughing. anyway amazing job as always and this video definitely deserves more views the quality of work is incredible.

My theory for sunny not speaking is that he has autism, I myself have autism, so does my siblings, my older brother learned how to talk when he was 10, plus his interactions even in the flashback part of the game are extremely similar to the way my brother interacts with his peers

Omori is such a cool game, of course. The first game with which I have a love and hate relationship: the game is the best, but Sunny pisses me off.

Even I probably wouldn't have suffered for so long if I had suddenly pushed my sister somewhere, and that means something, because I feel guilty even for some random stuff, but in general, it's not his fault
Even according to the law, there will be no punishment for him - he pushed Mari by accident, and he wasn't like "well, you're boring to me, sister, the world will be better without you," besides, he was 12 years old, plus a lot of time has passed
Idk why, something must be wrong with me, but I only feel irritation and pity towards Sunny, I don't understand how it happened at all.
As someone who's 12, I'd gladly sleep for 4 years. I'm overwhelmed and exhausted practically 24/7. And if I accidentally killed a beloved family member, (example: my mom) then I'd probably want to sleep for 4 years even more. I'd feel just as guilty as Sunny did when he killed Mari. I'd never forgive myself. I guess you and I have different opinions, I dunno. I personally relate to Sunny.
