Jody I would like to commend you on this socket weld video. In it you demonstrate and talk about (amps/filler diameter) getting the proper root pass root penetration. I worked for Southern Nuclear and was involved in their welding program. I was on an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) committee that researched socket weld failures in the nuclear power industry. Our research indicated that the biggest contributor to these failures was lack of root penetration. Again, thanks for the video demonstrating proper socket welding technique.

I just recently received my package from weldmonger a couple of weeks ago and while the furic #5 kit did make a huge difference with my aluminum welding, the gloves were the biggest surprise. The fit and feel is incredible and the amount of control that I have over the torch was easily doubled! Who would have thought you could pick up a 1/16 rod off the floor on the first try and not have to make it your sole purpose in life until you give up and take your glove off.

"this is the kind of weld that makes you feel better about yourself" ha love it! I always find that an amazing thing about welding.. as soon as you lift up your hood or even as you're going, you know right away that you either did a good job or not. .. and if you did good, it gives you that much more confidence to do the next one. also vice versa and one can sometimes get into a slump after just one bad weld. but hey, one weld at a time. great job, Jody. nice to see you

It's interesting to see you use a large gas lens instead of a regular one, and I'm curious about the reason. I'd expect a socket configuration like this to trap argon pretty well, so a large lens wouldn't be necessary. Since the larger diameter lens is also longer, perhaps it keeps your hands a little farther away from what must be (after 1+ minutes of steady 140 amps) a very hot piece of work!

I work in maintenance currently so I totally feel you on the nice clean setup and material. I don't get that too often nowadays lol. My socket weld experience all game from on the job. Nothing in schools. At my previous employer, we also used compression rings between the pipe and socket on some jobs. Any experience with those? Thanks for the content as always.
