    Today's sudoku has been requested by some of our patrons on Patreon - we were pretty sure before we tried it that this was because it was HARD... And we were right! It's also very very clever - it's called Antiknight Between Line and it's by Gliperal - do give it a try at the link below:
    app.crackingth...
    Rules:
    Normal sudoku rules apply. Cells separated by a knight's move (in chess) cannot contain the same digit. Digits on blue lines must be strictly between the digits in the circles at either end.
    ▶ SIMON'S WAY OF SOLVING LAST NIGHT'S MARK PUZZLE ◀
    As a Patreon bonus, Simon has recorded his solve of the beautiful puzzle Mark attempted last night by Sumanta Mukherjee. Mark did an amazing job of solving it without recourse the trickery that Simon is perfectly happy to employ!
    We've also released a sudoku hunt themed on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy as our monthly Patreon reward for June. Remember that we will also be releasing a new Murder Mystery Sudoku Hunt for everybody if we reach 5000 patrons.

    "I almost feel like Gliperal must have just been laughing as he set this."
    You're absolutely right about that Simon! This puzzle, to me, exemplifies some of the splendor of anti-knight, how so much can be forced through geometry alone. After the break-in (the lines through the center), I had only placed a couple cells of the other between lines, when the constraint grabbed the reigns. It was all I could do just to avoid the coloring becoming trivial. Rows/columns 3 and 7 are particularly powerful with this arrangement in the center box, and having the between lines poke diagonally into boxes 3 and 7 (hitting the only cells the circles can't see by sudoku/antiknight) causes these tremendous cascades which were a lot of fun to discover.
    Of course anti-knight is a fickle mistress, so those beautiful cascades ended up leaving no solutions an awful lot. I had to sacrifice symmetry in the end, in favor of a more elegant solve path. You can take either top left or bottom right between line and make the puzzle symmetric and it will still have a unique solution, but each one bypasses a lot of the ending logic.
    Thanks for giving this one a go! As expected you were able to spot the anti-knight geometry tricks rather quickly, and keep the solve flowing. A fully logical solve, with minimal look-ahead (if any), and spotting almost all of the desired tricks. I couldn't ask for a better treat on a Sunday afternoon.

      @@林老師-i5d Digits can repeat on a between-line puzzle, if sudoku rules allow it. They just can't *equal* either of the digits in the circles--that's the "strictly" part. But the two cells you mention see each other by knight's move, so they must be different, in this puzzle.

      That was the most fun I've had following an anti-knight "cascade"...I think you put that constraint through all its possible paces. You really could't miss a single implication or elimination, or you'd be stuck staring, but the logic flowed smoothly. Well done!

    I think this is a great example of what Clover was talking about in her setting video: sure, there's a fair bit of logic to wade through (colouring helps) but it's not difficult for the SAKE of being difficult. Where you need to focus for the break-in is clearly signalled; once you understand the interaction of the two variants, it's approachable and satisfying. I had a lot of fun with this one.

    The way I understand the purple digit not being on the line (I know this is pretty much what Simon was saying): starting with the yellow and red circles in the bottom left, if red5. Now even if we'd have yellow=6, since red is on the line, we must always count *down* from yellow to purple, so purplered. Since purple is on the red-green line, it must be larger than red, but we had already found that it had to be smaller, which is a contradiction.

I missed a lot of simple logic because I had a colour and number pair in two cells in a box/row/column but didn't realise it because I was doing sudoku on both numbers and colours. Had I left the cells as being a colour all the way through I wouldn't have had that problem.

    This was a great puzzle and a very entertaining video to watch even after having solved the puzzle myself.
    Simon finds that purple (I'll call it pink) needs to be a 1 around the 35 min mark, although that was immediately possible after he deduced it can only be a 1 or 9 at the 20 min mark, if he had focused on where pink goes in column 7 (row 7 or 9) and subsequently box 7 (because of the x-wing). This would immediately rule out the 9 from pink and the rest of the logic would have been somewhat more straightforward without the binary high/low logic.
    This was a recurring pattern in this puzzle that he would have spotted if he had focused on the antiknight constraint a bit more from the start. I appreciate he didn't though, because his thought process was very interesting without that early observation.

    It seemed like several times you were misled by the colouring, either thinking that a known cell was just a possibility _or_ thinking that a possibility was a known cell. If I'm "corner-marking" colours, I always colour them with silver _as well_ (being the closest to white) to make it clear that the cell is _not_ known to be, eg, blue, but is just one of the places that blue has to be. No, this doesn't work all that well with green or yellow because they are not as distinct, but it is fine with red, orange, blue, pink, grey and black.

      I do it this way too, and I note that Mark has adopted this convention too. It certainly helps identify pencilmarked colours from placed colours.

    • @TonyNaggs

      Homes in the UK extremely rarely have air-conditioning, and there are no small aircons available that would fit in a window. For context even in southern England we often only get a handful of days during the summer of ≥ 28°C.

    For those who prefer algebra at 18:30 -
    Let x be the value in the red cells. Thanks to Simon's markings, we have x = 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8.
    If x is 6, 7, or 8, replace every cell y with 10-y, throughout the whole grid, so x is now 2, 3, or 4. The between lines will still be valid, and our eventual conclusion below about the purple cell's location will be too. Thus without loss of generality, x is 2, 3, or 4.
    Let y be the value in the yellow cells, and suppose that y < x. Then x-y >= 4 because the between line that connects them has 3 cells. Rearranging the inequality, we get y x, we have x > p, meaning p is 1, 2, or 3.
    Let g be the value in the green cells, and suppose that g < p. Since p and g are connected by a between line with 3 cells, we have p-g >= 4, so g p.
    Now we see that x > p and g > p, so p cannot appear on a between line connecting x and g. But this is just what would happen if r6c5 were purple, so it must not be purple.

    The rules don't disallow repeats on the between lines. As a result the two circles in the lower left of the central loop only have to differ by 3, not 4. Same for the upper right pair.
    Is this a flaw in how the rules are written, or a flaw in Simon's reasoning? (asked after watching up to 14:44, maybe he figures it out later?)

    • @kevinmartin7760
      @kevinmartin7760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To answer myself, the antiknight rule, along with regular Sudoku rules, prevents the duplication along the wrap-around lines at the ends of the central figure, so these lines must contain three distinct numbers.

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinmartin7760 I was a bit surprised Simon didn't mention the anti-knight restriction prevented repeats on the between lines. He did give the appearance of just assuming they couldn't have repeats. He's usually so thorough with his explanations. Being charitable, I'd like to think he just thought it was so trivial, it didn't require any explanation. (If being uncharitable, I'd say he may have overlooked the possibility of repeats. )

    6:00 Easy way to remove the Y & P off the lines: top line shows G is in between Y & P. It can't be on the lower line where Y would be in between G & P. P can't be in between R & G on the lower line, since it is on an end on the upper line with both either greater or lower.

    I really don't like using solid colors for multi-cell candidates. Light grey is a good color to "cut" them with. White would be better still.
    Also, this puzzle was a case in point for retiring colors once they're known and mostly placed. A handful of corner pencil marks is much less distracting than 7 red placed 2's and 4 more candidate reds. If I hadn't reclaimed the 2, 1, and 5 colors part-way, I'd have had a grid full of confusing grey-black candidates amidst a dizzying rainbow swirl of known digits.
