Getting proficient with 3D and 3D engines is not as easy as learning photoshop. A lot of people study 3D for years to because employable. Start small with C4D lite and Blender tutorials, then climb up the ladders of the learning curve with Unity for instance. From my experience with AR/VR (prototyping for automotive), companies usually say design but they want 3D developers that can do it all. The holy grail...

Learning Unity seems like a pretty broad stroke. I would like a bit of insight as to where to start. I'm going to start with the basics tonight but I'm not even sure what that entails. It's been on my to-do list for a while and I've recently been laid off of my first Product Design role, so... here we go!

@@AJSmart I will definitely let you know how it goes once I get further along. So far I can see that there's a world potential if you can get pass the initial glaring UX/UI issues within the program itself. There are TH-cam videos Unity links to that explain how to start their tutorials, effectively giving instructions on how to start instructions. Pretty funny. If all else fails I'll do a case study on the usability of untiy! Seriously though, I'll touch base in a couple weeks once I've achieved something with the program.

Is there an advantage of knowing the basics of design when transitioning into VR/AR? So if you have a couple of years of interaction/ digital product design experience it wont be "wasted"?
Do you think knowing how to build and use design systems for increased productivity within product teams is valuable? Can it make you stand out from the ux designers with more experience in the market?
Also would love your take on design systems and the value it brings, as I have seen a sharp uprise in demand from clients.

I am right now learning all this things and is pretty tough to get all the information that I really need, so I have seen maybe 100 hours of videos from which just 10% of the information is gonna help me design in AR. I wanted to know your thoughts on this matter - I REALLY want to start learning more about AR/VR, found some excellent introductory courses on udemy. But I don't have a VR set! I want to buy a Quest (ESPECIALLY to play Alyx), but apparently Facebook is working on a new one already. Not sure if I should wait until the new one comes out or just buy the current. The only thing holding me back from learning about VR is not knowing if i should buy the current Quest or wait until who knows how long til the new one comes out.

I see two major skilling trends/future for all of us the so-called "UX Designers" these days:
    1- The Workshop Facilitator trend
2- The Mixed Reality (MR) Interaction Designer trend
The first trend, imo, is evolving to something about organizing people interaction, expression and exchange of thoughts. It's great but at this point I am not sure it's still a Design job. Or at least it's not a specifically Design-school-educated people job. Anyone from a business-school or anyone extrovert enough can make it.
The second trend is closer to what we are already. Besides evolving from basic 2D interface, besides we'll still need to mind human cognition ABC, it will also require to at least have basic notions of physiology and biomechanics (beyond the usual mobile thumbzone). One thing for sure: it still has room for creativity.
Personally I'll pick the second one.

The more technology advances, the more whole design begins to resemble an alloy of creativity and programming. And since AR is already a mixture of both, I think any specialist should broaden the variety of skills for such topics. If people are capable to create astonishing interfaces in 3D or 2D, I can only imagine, what brilliant stuff they can do with AR.

Hey Jon! Thanks so much for your deep dive on this! What will you do if you are a UI/UX Designer with a goal to become a Design Sprint/Workshopper/Consultant expert?. What path do you recommend at the moment to go? Learning new AR/VR skills (Unity, 3D, etc) or double down on Workshop, considering the new scenario of the economy for the next 10 years? 🤔

Hey Jose, workshops and workshop facilitation are a great toolkit for ANY UX / UI Designer to have. They're not mutually exclusive, but AR / VR is more of an individual skillset where as workshops will affect your whole team's / clients output and performance and cut out a lot of waste. Combine the two? Learn how to run and facilitate interactive workshops using some AR tech?

    by the way :
Vectary is a great tool to get started when it comes to 3d modelling, I have tried it and I really enjoy it. It is alot easier to use than Maya for instance.
vectary is targeted at digital product designers that wants to get into the 3d game:
