  • Bose and Sonos, both well-known speaker manufacturers, recently came out with new AirPlay 2-enabled speakers that are designed to work with Apple's latest AirPlay protocol and offer an alternative to products like the HomePod.
In our latest TH-cam video, we went hands-on with the Bose Portable Home Speaker and the Sonos Move to see what the speakers have to offer and how they compare to one another.

You need to add a text overlay to the video to explain this. Most people never read the comments, and being able to adjust the bass and treble is a hugely important feature for many users, myself included. The inability to adjust the bass and treble on the HomePod completely takes it out of consideration for me.

Auto Trueplay is another big difference that needs to be considered. Try playing either speaker in a small "boomy" room such as a bathroom to see how big of a difference it can make

I now own both and they are fun to have. With the bose I have both PHS white and Black and for now only one Sonos Move (black). The biggest gripe I see people argue about is Bass. Both sides say their product has more bass or "better" bass. Honestly, both lose bass as higher levels. You can see this with other comments who aren't stuck screaming their toy is better. Regardless if Bose or Sonos, while the bass is "good" its not earth shattering like some say. When I play the two Bose PHS in paired mode in the garage, I was hoping for that bump...it's...okay. I was expecting better but at higher levels both the Sonos and Bose just dip out on the bass. Which is fine, not all music is hip-hop that does nothing but 808's. And some not hip-hop songs have more bass than you would expect.
I remember one review saying that you wouldn't want play the Bose at more than 50% because the bass and sound is too much for say, an apartment...total BS, even at high levels none of my neighbors batted an eye. The person with a dedicated sub and true sound system is what people cared about. When a car with a bass system that can be felt from the parking lot. No one cares about tin cans barely rumbling a desk.
I like both systems but god, I feel they are both way over-hyped. I get it, these things were expensive, especially the sonos. But for as good as they are, they are still not replacing serious sound equipment, no matter how much people scream.

I have 2 Sonos Moves. My son has the Bose PHS. I like the sound of the Bose and was thinking about also purchasing the Bose when I want something a little lighter to carry outside to the park, or a hotel stay out of town. If I do decide to purchase the Bose. I will get 2 of them eventually. But 1 at first as they’re not cheap. Anyway, thanks for your comment.

I just listened to the sonos move, quite good speaker but whats disapointing is the bass once you reach slight over 50% volume, its more punching then really giving bass in my opinion.

Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Hey there, I own the Move as well.
A few tips for a walkthrough around the Sonos app:
There is an EQ in the settings app. It’s under settings, system, Move, EQ.
If you don’t have it near a wall or corner - disable Trueplay. The low ends come into play and sound really great set on a table to resonate into.
Set the bass from 3-6 in the EQ depending on your tastes. Treble 1-2.
One last thing - This thing truly shines in a corner or even on the floor by a wall. I know this sounds crazy, but the acoustics on a floor, or in a corner next to the wall sound really boomy and the low ends sound dramatic! I initially was ready to take my Move back until you mentioned you didn’t see an EQ on the app.
Let me know what you think, very curious to hear your thoughts!

Theres literally no bass. Yeah it sounds super clear, it'd probably be an awesome speaker for listening to podcasts or something, but i was hoping to have an awesome speaker for music. That being said, Bose has improved significantly in recent years.
IMHO the PHS has too much bass, but could play lower. I am nitpicking though, because it does sound pretty good, especially considering the size.
I once listened to a speaker demonstration, where two models of a mostly mid range speaker manufacturer were compared. One was an active bookshelf speaker, which laid on quite a lot of bass. It was pretty impressive. And then they switched to their top of the line passive speaker, a 70 kg monster with 8 speakers per channel, including two 285 mm ultra-longthrow-woofers... basically, imagine having two BIG subwoofers on the left and two more on the right. The price shot up from around 1.500 Euro to 11.200 Euro, and that's before amplifiers, which drove the price up to 17.000 Euro. When they made the switch I wondered where all the bass had gone. There wasn't any left. Until my ears adjusted and I noticed how my body was being massaged. It was an intense experience, the violence with which the (now barely audible) bass hit me.
Most speaker manufacturers amp up low (but not that low) frequencies in order to give you the illusion of strong bass, which they can't really reach. The lower the speaker actually gets, the less they tend to fake it. I'd say Sonos gets low enough with the Move (almost down to 40 Hz), so they don't have to put on any make up. The Soundlink Mini II gets to about 60 Hz, and I'd guess the Portable Home Speaker is somewhere in between.

After listening to both the Bose and the Sonos Move. The Move sounds better to me because I think the music is more accurate! The separation is impeccable. The vocals, mids and lows are spot on. I don’t hear the same separation with the Bose. It’s clean and the bass is great, but I’m just not hearing the same accuracy if this makes sense!! I’m gonna stick with my 2 Moves for now.

What's with this review? The Sonos are far superior. They are in a different class really. Did you actually listen to them side by side with the same music? I have and in my opinion there was not even a comparison. The Sonos was much louder, clearer and in the right positioning, sounds enormous compared to the Bose.

@@michaelwal2600 There is no Bose of the old but if there was, it would be better than newer Bose. Everyone knows that Bose went downhill when Amar Bose died and gave the company up to MIT. Pretty much all of their products sold in the US are now made with incredibly low standards in Mexico. Bose is just a name used to sell cheap speakers to people who don't know any better.

The sonos is much heavier than the bose. I thinks Sonos should tell you up front that you do need wifi first in order for the Sonos move to activate. They tout their first Bluetooth speaker as so why do you need wifi first. Bose is a wifi speaker also but it will activate on Bluetooth without wifi first. So in this case I give bose the edge
