I would argue that Nancy is almost as amazing a vocalist in her own right. The song "These Dreams" from this same Alive In Seattle performance is stellar ( th-cam.com/video/0DLeH2FWFTE/w-d-xo.html ). The intonation is stellar. From grit, to soft breathy, to falsetto... she is masterful. And listen to Ann's amazing harmonies... Touche. And the finale is Nancy's sick range she displays at the end of the song... Don't imagine Ann with her dominant chest voice can pull that off... Whatever rock categories you can think of to plug these two into, and they're floating at the top.

I remember seeing the Grateful Dead in Oakland with a friend, in 1987, and she & I shared a taxi back to SF with a nice couple. We were so relieved when we reached our destination because all the driver talked about was how very tight Ann and Nancy’s clothes were (he brought up Heart even though we were returning from a Dead concert). He went on and on - really a creepy perverted creep. So yes, a lot of guys overlooked or ignored the band’s talent and reduced them to their physical appearance. (I know, not all guys!) Those women must have had to put up with a lot of crap over the years - am glad they did and that we are still enjoying their talent 40+ years after they first came onto the scene!

I feel sorry for you and anyone watching this for the first time. You can only imagine what was like to see those two perform. But I; I was there. It was at the Sands Hotel Amphitheatre in Las Vegas; during their release of Desire Walks On. Ann and Nancy did an acoustic set; just the two of them, like you, see here. Then after a 20-minute break, came back rocking hard with the band. I remember it well. They did Zeppelin's Battle for Evermore, with Nancy on mandolin, and Ann on flute. They performed this song, Dreamboat Annie, and many others. After the break; the lights dimmed, you could only hear Nancy's guitar playing the first notes before Ann belted out "Black on Black!" The lights flashes as the drums pounded, and the concert starts in earnest. It was an amazing night, and even those it had been some 20 years, those ladies this knew how to rock!

Dude. Thanks so much for such a truly honest review/reaction. It is Feb. 2022, I am now 56 yrs old. I have followed this band since the late 70's. & have heard their songs over & over, & for me, it never, ever gets old. I have had the honor & privilege to see this, in my eyes one of the most iconic, legends of rock & roll to perform live onstage, multiple times. Ann & Nancy are clearly a force to be reckoned with to say the very least. Much love from Vancouver B.C. Canada.

Ann's voice gave me chills during this performance! I've heard the song a million times, and the slight hesitation before she "blew my face off" made the high notes really pay off.

    Greetings Fil,
I fed as a younger man on Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella, Aretha, Tina Turner and then, at age 17, I saw Janis & Big Brother at the Fillmore in San Francisco and I've never recovered for from that night on, she wore the crown as far as I'm concerned. It wasn't until Heart that I was once again completely infatuated with a female vocalist who had a head and chest voice that gripped with range and emotion and decades later the Wilson sisters are still killing it. Amazing harmonies.
    As always, many thanks Fil.

Ann and Nancy have been amazing for decades now. I know you've reviewed their Midnight Special performance of Magic Man but if you want to watch Nancy play and Ann sing you should watch the performance of Crazy On You, also from the Midnight Special. Even today, Ann is still rocking it out, collaborating with all sorts of musicians including a just released guest appearance on Disturbed's latest single, Don't Tell Me.

A very cool selection Fil, as usual. Ann Wilson is (IMHO) the female Freddie Mercury. Incredible, powerful, delicate, subtle and massive all times. Nancy Wilson is a great guitarist who has been extremely influential to female players. Absolutely amazing for decades. I've seen them 4 times and each time has been phenomenal.

I agree with what you said, except Nancy has been influential to guitar players, in general, not just females. I’m a guy and Nancy has inspired me for forty years, but I doubt I’ll ever have command of an acoustic like her. She makes magic and along with Ann’s incredible singing, they make for one of the best one-two punches in the history of rock music. Still.

I saw Heart perform about 5 years ago at McMenamen's outdoors outside of Portland. Phenomenal performance. Ann's voice was fantastic. Same if not better. Nancy rocked it on guitar and vocals. Then I went to see them live several times and they have been one of my favorites ever since. The harmonies between the two are great. Nancy is a great singer in her own right. And she's got the moves like Jimmy Page on stage with her swag and kicks still in her 50's! They are AWESOME!!!
