with trainers like these we need some fighters so they have something to train for

What New Zealand needs is a pocket Fighter like the South Korean F/A-50 Golden Eagles, Italian M-346FA or the BAE Advanced Hawk. It would give them a pocket fighter to protect their Sovereignty.

There's no direct threat to New Zealand sovereignty right now, and our alliances with Australia and the US mean that the cost of fighter aircraft would not be justified, which is a shame because I would have loved to have seen the RNZAF roundel on an F-16 (which New Zealand was intending to buy before 2002)

@@acreepykiwi6788 The F-16 deal NZ had was really good as it was a heavily discounted deal on aircraft, parts, training etc as the original deal fell through. Then we had Helen Clark saying at the time (im old enough to remember) that NZ doesn't need Jet aircraft because they only have one purpose, so instead she opted that we should go for attack helicopters that also never happened.
We currently have zero ability to stop a civilian aircraft being used as a weapon let alone one of a more military nature.

New Zealand should buy some new Gripen fighter jets or maybe buy some of the old F-18's from Australia. Norway has some 40 year old F-16's on offer if they are interested. The Norwegian F-16's hvae gotten Midlife uppdates and has flown both in Norway but also missions in the WARs in former Jugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya.

Bet they didn't envisage fly by wire, hands of controls, integrated heads up displays, Infrared heat detection ,all weather flying and mostly automated ships and planes. Our military is a modern one, bet they also didn't invisage supersonic missiles or electronic decoy systems and countermeasures our helicopters, and P8, Frigates use.☺In peacetime every nation disarmed, Britain cut their forces considerably.

We got to go fly in some bi ole tin-a RNZAF Bristol Freighter from Rukahia Airfield in Hamilton. On takeoff, I spied these paper bags behind the seats . . . and that is where my head spent most of the flight. Man o man did I get airsick. But luckily not everytime I was in an airplane or helicopter. Unfortunately they canned the ATC the following year. What a darned shame.
