Question: I don´t have an actual Kindle, I have the kindle app installed on my phone and pc and read from there. What would be the steps for me as I will not have a ´serial´ number as I dont read from an actual kindle device?
Hi @Courageous, sadly this really only works with having a physical Kindle, I have tried hacking it so to try and get it working and I would not suggest doing this as you would need to change the Registry which I would not recommend because you could corrupt your PC if you do something wrong. You are better off buying a cheap/second hand Kindle and follow my instructions. Cheers.
Can this be done even if you don't have a kindle? I have the kindle app on my phone (which is android) but no physical kindle... I got most of the way through this tutorial but got stuck when I had to input the unique key for the kindle into the plugin.
Hi Joanne, as far as i understand the mechanism I’m afraid the kindle app wont work as you need a serial number. Sorry it wasn’t the answer you wanted - I actually tried to make it work with the PC app but that required hacking the registry which I don’t think the average Joe Bloggs would be comfortable doing.
@@MaverickNextGen good, I have been using it for over two years and one thing sure that all my notes are stored electronically. Be side downloading and converting Kindle book, reading with remarkable is amazing. Big screen and being able to take note are what this devise is outstanding.
Awesome video, thanks for your help, I'm having issues and wondering if there's a solution? I followed the instruction but when I try to DeDRM my book, it only allows me to have the input format "MOBI" vs AW, any idea on how to solve this?
Hi @Kaleb, when you download your kindle book from the amazon website using the "Download & Transfer via USB" option and select your Kindle, this will ensure that the AZW3 format is downloaded. Right click on the the book you are trying to convert in Calibre and select "Open containing folder". If the folder does not contain the AZW3 file this will be a reason for why it is not available in the "Input" drop down. Let me know what you find. Cheers.
Hey Maverick (just thought I was in an F-14 for a second LOL): Very nice video on this topic. I also love eBooks but wanted to have a nonDRM version purely for accessibility reasons (eyesight issues are making it more difficult to read). So I try to order the Audible companion audiobook along with my Kindle books. However, many of them do not have companion audiobooks (too old, too narrow a topic, not a major books as far sales go, too technical or trade specific, etc). Purely for personal use. However, many of the DRM-file steps that you (and other content providers) simply do not work for me. Using Calibre, plugin (different versions), etc. I have a Mac. Also have a Windows virtual machine-running-on Mac. Is your procedure only good for PCs? Also, does the version of the Kindle app matter? I have heard that a user has to walk back to an older version of the Kindle for .... Actually several TH-camrs say this about Calibre versions and the DRM plugin versions. I briefly tried a few of these methods, but have not had any success. Trying a few other things before tabling this issue for a while. Please advise on how to proceed. Thanks.
Do you know if you can do this without having a Kindle? If you have bought books for the ipad Kindle app, is it possible to do this as well? I'm having no luck.
I have bought a supernote with the intention of also reading books there. It was such a bummer that I couldn't read my books that I bought however after watching this, I can! I'm so thankful for this video. This helped tremendously, thank you so much!!
Hi @Amber, thank you 😊 and really glad it can be used not for rM2 only. I realise that it can be used for any similar device. What search term did you type into TH-cam/google to find my vid?
When trying to load plug in from file I get error code that says: InvalidPlugin: Blacklisting the DeDRM Version (7.2.1) plugin as it is too old and causes crashes. Update it to the latestversion to use it
Do you have to own a Kindle for this to work? I have an Android phone, PC, reMarkable 2, and Surface Book 3 - I run the Kindle app on these devices. Tried work-arounds but, so far, no go.
Hi @Darthbrenga, sadly yes you need a physical Kindle. I have also tried hacking the kindle app and its a horrible process which doesn’t work because sometime the app upgrades to the latest version.
@@MaverickNextGen oh well, guess I will have to decide whether or not to purchase a cheap Kindle, to use as a dummy device, just so I can put content on my reMarkable - just nice to be able to write notes, journal, and refer back to source-material, on one device. Hi @C Warn, sorry for the delay in responding, I have just installed calibre 5.36 on my Mac mini and I understand your problem. The solution is, make sure you are in the application then GOTO you menu bar at the top of the screen and not in the user interface. You will see the apple symbol, Add books, Edit Meta data, Convert books, Calibre Library, Save to disc, Preferences and Help menus. Choose Preferences menu and select the Preferences item. And there you have it, continue where my video shows the preferences dialogue window. (A bit annoying that the User interface is does not have the Pref button on the application itself) Enjoy!

Hi @Dishant, sadly this is the case with the latest version of Kindle software, this trick (in the video) only works if you have purchased on your book for your physical kindle because it allows you to download the azw3 file from your Amazon account which can be DeDRMd. It’s the newer KFX format that has issues, see blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2018/04/14/alfs-drm-removal-tools-now-support-kindles-kfx-format/. Hope this helps.
Thumbs up eventhough it did not work anymore in march of 2022. The DeDRM-thing does not do it as of today anymore. Maybe a later version will do it again...
I followed each of your steps, but for some reason, my windows 10 pro PC won't allow me to "unzip" the DeDRM plugin. it remains a zip file even when I right-click and ask for it to extract all. I have downloaded calibre, Kindle for PC, and the recommended DeDRM, but I am told that the current plugin can not be downloaded into my calibre. I am getting very frustrated. Hi Kondai, re: “it does not show anything that I could use”, did you manage to install the plugin and what does the error say? Thanks Chris
after that (taking notes) can you sync with your devices? and continue doing it in you laptop? or it is a different service?
Thanks Ivan for the question, I’m looking into it myself as I believe reMarkable may have introduced some new functionality on their mobile/desktop apps to allow you to do this.
@@MaverickNextGenHello, I just bought the remarkable. It is not possible to continue the edition on the phone nor in the Laptop. I have the option to transform (in the remarkable) from notes taking with pen to digital text, however I do not know if this is a free option for ever or it is just limited edition for 1 year
Question: I don´t have an actual Kindle, I have the kindle app installed on my phone and pc and read from there.
@Maverick Next Gen Ah OK. That's a bit annoying but fair enough. Thanks for your reply 😊 back to the drawing board it is!
I'm using it for educational reading and i need to get some more books from kindle.
Hi @Amin matin, hope you get lots of reading done on you rM2, how you finding using the rM2?
@@MaverickNextGen I love the device. Since I got it , I don't carry any paper or notebook. Next generation for electronic paper.
How long have you had your rm2?
@@MaverickNextGen nearly one year
@@MaverickNextGen good,
I have been using it for over two years and one thing sure that all my notes are stored electronically. Be side downloading and converting Kindle book, reading with remarkable is amazing. Big screen and being able to take note are what this devise is outstanding.
Utterly brilliant, thanks so much for sharing, this has opened up even more possibilities with the RM2!
Hi @Stuart Proctor, thank you so much for the great feedback. Very please it’s opened up possibilities. Enjoy!
Thanks.
There a lot of pain I’ve gone through trying to get DeDRM to work with Amazon only because I’ve already bought the digital book. I will have a think.
Do you know if you can do this without having a Kindle? If you have bought books for the ipad Kindle app, is it possible to do this as well? I'm having no luck.
Hi @Chris, sadly you need a physical Kindle for this to work, sorry 😞
Please make the video on "how to convert ePub to KePub".
Thank you for this
Welcome!
Super useful, thank you!
Hi @spletty, hope you got favourite books loaded. Are they text of fiction books?
When trying to load plug in from file I get error code that says: InvalidPlugin: Blacklisting the DeDRM Version (7.2.1) plugin as it is too old and causes crashes. Update it to the latestversion to use it
Hi Diego, are you using Windows or Mac and which operating system?
Does this still work? Im sure i read that Amazon has brought out a new DRM protocol....
Great vid though - helped a Calibre newb get familiar.
Cheers.
I was going to suggest buying a kindle second hand. As you say having this all in one place notes is freedom and worth getting a kindle for. Note this does not work with Fire kindle be warned. Cheers
2 years later, does this still work?
Do you need to have a physical kindle for this to work? Or can you do it if you just use the android app?
Hi @Dabignipp, sadly you do need a physical kindle.
Chris - The connect/share Icon on the top right of the calbre page is not shown. Has it been moved? Did I not install correctly?
Hi @mike, can you let me know what the time reference in the video you are referring to so I can help you? Cheers
@@MaverickNextGen At 4:51 in your video you show how to install the drm plugin. On the Calibre page on the top row far right is an icon that you select, connect/share. That icon does not appear on my copy of calibre. I tried several versions of calibre. Am I missing a step? Has calibre changed it’s page? Any ideas? Thanks.
@@mikecochran8660 , connect/share should be present. Try clicking on the elipses (three vertical dots, which you can see to the right of the connect/share button at 4:51) and hopefully you will get connect/share function offered to you. Let me know how it goes.
When you are showing the DeDRM file that is extracted, it is different from when I try to extract them.
Hi Chris, what format does it show when you extract them in Calibre and are you using a PC? Thanks
This is great. I do have one small issue. Installing it for my Mac. When loading the DeDRM plugin I am getting the following error "Invalid Plugin: Blacklisting the DeDRM version (7,2,1) plugin as it is too old and causes crashes. Update it to the latest version to use it. I did not see a newer version of the plugin. Thoughts?
Hi Joshua, what’s your Mac setup ie Model, OS version and Calibre version?
@@MaverickNextGen I too had a Mac issue and I am running the latest OS & Calibre versions. When going to customize the plug-in, the Calibre app crashes.
same thing is happening to me!
I don't have a Kindle device but have bought Kindle books and view them on my Mac, iPhone and iPad Kindle app. Therefore I do not have a Kindle device Serial Number to enter into the De DRM Plugin, what do I do?
Hi, sadly you won’t be able to use this method unless you have a physical kindle.
SO GOOD, THANKS
Welcome
Do notes and highlights transfer from kindle to remarkable when you do this?
Good question, I suspect not - I will try and confirm
I have aMac. When i open Calibre, there is no Pref tab to install plugin
Thank you
Does it save your pen mark ups in the file on your remarkable once you close out of it?
Need the Mac version. Thank you for sharing, but, 2 yrs. later, an update is needed.
Will keep you posted, hoping to get a Mac soon
hi, I am unable to convert kindle book to pdf. Problem = when downloading book in older kindle software 1.17 it shows to upgrade. when i upgrade it to 1.33 & converting by calibre then drm issue is there. I have tried 1.26,1.24 too. But no success. DRM is too rigid to remove please help.
Hope this helps.
if i don't have Kindle How to get the serial Number ?
Afraid this only works if you own a physical kindle, to get a serial number you will need to buy one.
Every time I click on customize plugin it crashes.
What version of Calibre have you installed, and what is the version of the plugin?
Bonjour, je n'y arrive pas sur MAC, impossible d'ouvrir CALIBRE
For some reason, still gives me the DRM notice in spite of plugin being installed:(
Sorry to hear this Sharon, what does the notice say exactly?
Anyone else getting a "Kindle Unpack" icon in Calibre? I'm not getting the same command to add my serial number either. PC
Hi Angie are you still getting this icon?
Thumbs up eventhough it did not work anymore in march of 2022. The DeDRM-thing does not do it as of today anymore. Maybe a later version will do it again...
Thanks for thumbs up, which Kindle do you have?
Are you sure? It works perfectly for me in both, using an old Android version and using my 2015 Kindle.
The ruse still works as of July 2022. I have a Kindle Oasis.
Hi Thomas, thanks for confirming I’ll put a post out to let others know that it works for Kindle Oasis too! Cheers
I searched everywhere for solutions and many of them tell me to download a different software that doesn't require a plugin. Please help me.
Hi Chris, have you managed to resolve this? Let me know, thanks
In his video he says you need the zip file to upload as a plugin. you don't have to unzip the file.
