Nice work, Pete. Indeed, it's so fundamental to their training, that it really pays to take extra time and go at their pace. I usually back horses bareback before saddling and backing later, so they become accustomed to weight first.

Thank you so much! I am debating getting on her bareback before I do it with a saddle tbh. Does that usually go better in your experience?

good to see other trans equestrians and props to you for taking the time to allow your mare to adjust to the saddle.
do you ride english? if so, do you have any recommendations for male riding clothes? from the already limited stock i can find, most things are too large for me (5'4) and the women's clothing doesn't fit my body since i've been on t for a few years.

thank you so much! I prefer western, but I do a little of both! I ALWAYS wear men's jeans and western chaps while riding. My advice to you would be not to worry about what you're supposed to wear and focus more on what is most comfortable for you!

I buy from Ashbree Saddlery for summer wear. The new style of riding tights are super light and stretchy, and would fit most body-types. All the best!

she did so well! congrats :)
is it also an indicator of comfort/connection with you that she is even able to be distracted by something elsewhere?

yes and no, while many of her mannerisms definitely indicate comfort with him, horses are naturally prey animals so they will pay close attention to any movements or disturbances in their vision. connection or not, she'd probably take intrest in her surroundings.

thank you! and not really, I attribute it mostly to her age, the younger the horse the shorter the attention span. And like I said she's only been on this farm for about a month, it can take 6 months to a year for them to feel fully familiar with their environment. She's still getting used to this place!

you'd be suprised! most race horses are broken at 18 months and tend to begin their careers at 2 years of age. the kentucky derby has an age requirement of at least three years, so this girl could hypothetically be completely broke and ridable by now. however, most horses ridden younger develop issues later in life. personally, i think he's on a very good track with where he and this filly are, but what do i know, i don't know him or his horse :)

most horses can be ridden by the time they're 3. But since they're still developing physically until about 5-6 years, it's best not to do any super heavy work/ jumping until they're older! And she's an Arab, they're kind of a smaller breed, but i think she'll get a little bit bigger :)

It's best to wait till 3 or 3.5yo to train for saddle, but as long as a horse isn't being asked to carry more than 20-25% of their bodyweight, it's fine.
