Is there any possiblity that Liszt heard this work (assuming it was ever played) and was thus inspired to write on the same subject? Liszt was known to have actually met Franck and admired him as an organist. Franck had the misfortune to have jumped out of one frying pan and into another - he escaped a domineering father only to marry a woman who went from being an early inspiration to him to becoming a complete and utter nag. It's little wonder that Franck took so long to find his way as a composer.

L'ha definito "Symphonic Poem" prima di Liszt ? Vorrebbe dire che spetterebbe a Franck tale definizione! Un ottimo pezzo sinfonico,complessivamente migliore a Liszt per orchestrazione e atmosfere suggestive.Un interessantissimo e splendido post.Complimenti .
en fait, il existe une version récente de Mikko Franck , chef d'orchestre de l'actuel orchestre de Paris. Chef finlandais , et l'album s'appelle Franck joue Franck;Superbe aussi !
Questo poema sinfonico che precede di due anni l'omonimo di Franz Liszt forse è anche superiore a quest'ultimo per le atmosfere che sa evocare.il poema di Liszt è un bel brano romantico ma poco ha a che fare con l'assunto.
This piece is a real curiosity and basically unknown, though I can see why. It's slow and fairly gloomy. Liszt's version on the other hand is far more interesting and varied in atmosphere and orchestration. Nothing really stands out here. It didn't make much of an impression on me but I might give it another shot in the future.
Though a bit earlier than Liszt's beautiful vision of the Hugo poem, I find Franck's composition even more evocative and inspiring.

Liszt wrote a tone poem on the same topic. For sure, his orchestration is more brillant. But is it more profound?
