- Dugouts, also known as "suvaja" in Serbian, have historical significance in Serbia, particularly in rural areas.
Ilya has a channel called Forest Paths in which he shows us how to build this type of traditional huts in the cold.

But need to know:
Wood need to be dried for at least 2 years
Also when you burry a wood pole, you must put stone or brick with a hole under to let the accumulated water out. Otherwise; the tree trunk will be rot soon.
This guys parents raised a fine young man. They must be proud.

Our front part of the cottage in northern Ontario was built in 1929. I can only imagine from your video the work that went into it using the wood grown around the home. Your log cabin was amazing to watch but the hard work you put into the cabin in fast forward so much. In awe.

Classwork. I watch videos of someone building shelters in the forest. I also build various houses in nature and post them on TH-cam. Interesting hobby. When you are in nature, you take a break from city life

I've watched several videos like this. It would be good if they told who owned the land they were building on. I assume they do. Most people don't have access to land like them to do similar projects. Also, how long did it take them to complete their project and what did it cost.

Amazing how he didn't hit one tree root or rock while digging in the middle of a forest.
My thoughts exactly I can drive a spade in the ground without hitting a rock the size of my head haha
You know he’s got a whole team with him, they show him hit the hole with a shovel a few times inbetween the excavator shoveling out a perfect walled hole in the ground. Then they post these perfectly straight and prepped trees into the holes, after showing him literally playing with his shovel as if he just dug 4’ supporting beam post holes himself real quick. And then just a few more super nails with that Home Depot special hammer and then just a few finishing touches with straw, bricks, a few more pieces of freshly split wood, and freshly mixed cement, not bad for a day’s work!

I would suggest mud-and-straw adobe construction. Right away it’s air tight and has very high R-value.
I built a log structure below the ground surface back in the ‘70’s in a remote village…..it was the cess pool for my septic system. Worked perfectly.
A young guy is already building a house for himself like this. when he's a little older, he'll do a miracle

Building into soil is a recipe for Mold. It will be uninhabitable shortly after a wet spring. If he kept it out of the dirt, he'd be doing himself a huge favor. After all, you don't want your labor or love to Mold away and rot.

This forest is far from my house here in NewYork our ground needs to be dug by massive machinery because of all the debris chunks of
rock 🪨 and wood🪵 stops any dog with a shovel we definitely wouldn’t get anywhere with a flat tipped shovel that’s for sure 😂

this cottage will not last long, after the first winter, it will be damp and start rotting away.
I like the fact that you can't see much of it, which I think is also the real reason why it is built this way.
