This is one of the most valuable lesson to not only watch Dan's incredible abilities n he embedds you to pick up your bass even for 5 minutes. And instructing you on the way. Awesome video n thank you Dan Hawkins ❤
Thanks Dan...Amazing 'Impossible Technique' ...Hopefully be in my arsenal for years to come!! Love the Fundamental Changes.. My exercise regime has centered around many of your examples found in Funk Grooves/Creative Bass Technique/RnB Soul & Motown books. You are an inspiration and damned fine teacher (and bassist).
Waw 😮 I'm amazed always. My only setback is owning a bass I usually borrow the bass from my church and practice at home. I'm not near good but I plan on practicing everyday I have it with me. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us. Blessings
Good point with the pick. I am a fingers player, but maybe 5% of the songs I do would work well with a pick. I try it, but for me it is hard to do, even though I use a pick on guitar all the time. Something I should definitely work on. Thanks for the tips!
👍I'm lazy when it comes to practicing! If I don't have much time, I practice chord tones, chromatic scales, some Philly International tunes "Disco Inferno" thanks for this fresh idea.👍
So when you are picking a song / riff / solo to get into. How do you recommend finding the tabs/music? Do you buy an official licensed tab book for that album? Or Is there a good paid website that offers lots of music? Or Should tabs be avoided and you just need to figure it out yourself by ear? The internet gives lots of bad tabs, often you have to look up multiple versions and cobble together a frankentab of your own. But even then, it’s just a guess. Any advice on sites? Or other ways to obtain the music?
@@nstig8or it’s a dying art unfortunately. Before TAB sites and the internet, that’s how people learned songs. There was no other way. You just did it and improved your ear as there was no other choice. Learning from TAB exclusively hampers the development of one’s ear. It’s also not difficult once you get over the initial hurdle of it seeming difficult!
@@OnlineBassCourses definitely seems like good advice, thank you as always. Thankfully headphones prevent my neighbors from having to endure my exploratory bass surgery
I have an interesting way of learning songs on bass as a beginner. Since I know the notes on a piano and bass, I just play along with the piano tutorials on TH-cam. It's great because I can learn the melodies too. I know I can just learn to read music, but I can learn much quicker this way currently. It's probably very inaccurate, though. Thoughts?
@Dan Hawkins Bass Lessons being able to adjust the playback speed is so convenient. I also like doing the rhythm exercises for drummers on TH-cam, but on my bass.
Hi! Could you make videos about muting? I noticed that when I'm playing sometimes there is unwanted harmonics between notes. I use floating thumb and don't have flying fingers at all but still my StingRay resonant. I noticed that ex. I must push somewhat E string when I mute it with my thumb because unwanted ringing appears even if I hold my thumb on the string all the time. Sometimes I can mute it with my left hand too but when I play in higher strings I can't mute it with both hands and harmonics from E string appeared. Long story short it would be great to get more info about muting and clean playing overall like no string noise when changing positions and so on. Thanks!
Absolutely. I think playing songs is even more important as a beginner because it keeps you interested in playing the instrument. It also motivates you to learn/practice techniques you need to perform the songs.
Flea, as most know, was a horn player. He plays like one on solos like this. Great job, Dan.
Thank you Dan, you’re an amazing bassist! 🙂
Thank you, Shaun.
First month with my fender AP2 p bass. I play it constantly 🎶 🎉
Thanks
Thanks, Phil!
Thank you!!!!

Great video. I especially appreciate the tip on Moises, been looking for something like that to help learn bass lines. Thank you!
Great app! Video to follow…

That’s very much - that’s very kind of you! 🙏🙏
great tips on how to optimize the songs i already have to learn
🙏
Dude! You're inspiring. Love your humility. 🔥🔥🔥 Also, I had the same trouble with Spain... but what a great tune, especially for bass.
Thanks very much! It is a great tune.

That sounds like good things to practise!

Ear. Every single time. Start with easy songs, do it A LOT, don’t get frustrated (you will get better at it).
@@OnlineBassCourses oh ok thank you…so the hardest option imaginable? 😜 great. Here I come John Paul Jones…time to fully disrespect a masterpiece!

Got the same bass!!!! ❤
Nice!
Hi Dan, thanks for all the great lessons ! What strings (gauge, rounds / flats) are you using on your Stingray ?
Thanks! Old Elites Stadiums 45-105.
Thanks Dan !

Always warm up before attempting the frigidian mode
🥶
So is that Chilean Mode?
😊
I only solo in super locrian
That must sound…interesting.
Would say this holds for a rather new beginner player as well. I know scales and major and minor are good as well.. but song play helps?
Absolutely. I think playing songs is even more important as a beginner because it keeps you interested in playing the instrument. It also motivates you to learn/practice techniques you need to perform the songs.
Definitely.
@@OnlineBassCourses thank you love the videos.. 30 years of time from playing as a teen. Just picked up the bass again at 46..
@@frozenskies1718 thank you for the comment and advice.. at 46 it brings back a lot of memories after 30 years of not playing.
