- An Irish ghost story, or perhaps an Irish fairy story, where a wastrel boy compromises the reputation of a local girl and when he goes out on the road to think, he meets a party of the good folk (na daoine sidhe) and they give him something to carry, and something to bury.
An Irish story told by Douglas Hyde, first president of Ireland and the craoibhinn aobhinn himself. I thought it was about time we did an Irish ghost story and this is hits all the targets.

There is a DVD movie called Dreamkeeper that has a number of Native American stories, speaking of storytellers who would go around and repeat the traditional stories. You may be interested in watching them. The movie is fascinating in its own right.

Great story. One of the reasons I listen to your stories, besides them being good stories and you are a good reader, is you never know how they will end. Could be a good ending or not.
I wish I could get my 23 year old daughter to Really Listen to this story and it’s deeper meaning about life and the lessons that get harsher each time they have to be retaught before one Finally learns…..but I “see” that is also the whole point of this morality tale…we ALL have to take our “lumps” till we learn each “life lesson”. I think my biggest lesson learned is that we are never done learning nor “growing up” and those of us who become rigid in their thinking and unable to change how they think and feel about things be they big or small will continue to suffer more than necessary and take more “lumps” till they are once again a clay lump ready to be remolded into devil or tree, angel or tea, however that final mystery truly be😘
How we all wish our children and loved ones would not have to go through such agonies to realize the error of our ways!

Lefcadio Hearn was an Irish-Greek writer who wrote Japanese ghost stories after moving to Japan, well worth reading too.. Also The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien, is an Irish humorous (sort of) ghost story too which I'd recommend 👍 great work as always Tony!

Oh and by the way your narration of “The Lottery” literally gave me a nightmare which as self taught lucid dreamer is a true rarity for me, thank all that’s good❣️So, Yes this is a compliment, an odd one perhaps but also a very high one❗️That story deeply effected me years ago when I read it (and the entire book of short stories required or not😉) for an English literature class….but your voice, your narration style, ie your tempo, accent etc etc etc, is just SO powerful that it got in to my head on a level that caused not only the aforementioned rarity of me not being able to take control of that dream and switch it up before it went south, deep & dark big time but it also haunted my cognitive space while awake for days afterwards 😶🌫️ Sorry for all the gushy sounding fanatic comments But I AM a fan obviously and I’m a wordy, nerdy bookworm and every compliment is the earnest truth and a long winded THANK YOU❣️👻❣️

Thanks, Mr. W ~ this story feels like it has lots of old tendrils to it...reminds me of elements from several oral traditions woven together---so, while you were concerned about your variable accent while reading it (my ear really didn't notice it, but then I'm not from the UK) perhaps you were actually being affected by something deeper that didn't WANT you to do it all of a piece. Echos from the past moving through your reading...if that makes any sense. Anyway, I truly enjoyed it...it's evocative and creepy without being too coarse.

This is an excellent story.
I’ve listened a couple of times so far and will continue to listen for the beautiful incomprehensible words. A perfect story of other-world people, the dead, the ghost, and the choices made. I can see the corpse very clearly… an innocent pawn in the punishment. Thank you.

I think I read this story retold by Yeats. It’s one of my favorites!!!
Awesome narration accent and all. Could the corpse be a metaphor of all his evil deeds. His bad behaviour would have caused his downfall in the long run. He was offered an opportunity for grace with his meeting with the fairies as before that he had no intention to change.

Someone below rightly caught the notes of this in the Hellboy movie - which in turn adapted the even more directly faithful version of this story in the comics Hellboy: The Corpse #1-3! Just substitute Hellboy for Taig and it's relatively 1:1.

This is bigoted and unenlightened but I think my reply to anyone who approaches me speaking Gaelic would be an instinctive “Oh yeah pal ? Well right back at you.” It’s an enchanting language. A perfect blend of gobbing and biting people
Look can we agree that not all languages are created equal and the local lingo in this tale is the most butt-ugly language ever contrived by humanity. It’s designed to repel outsiders. No offense intended to any nation or tribe.
Have you finished ‘Drood’ or throw it across the room in fury ? If you finished it please tell me - did Drood exist ? And speaking of incomprehensibility it dawned on me the language spoken in this story made me think of Finnegans Wake. I make no claim to having read that distinguished work. I’ve just read from it or quoted it when I thought it in my interest to sound insane. Finnegan and Drood are very intangible geezers.

Such a good story although I thought there was going to be a twist at the end from those fairies. My forebears fled to NZ from Ireland in the mid 1800s. Unfortunately their politics and religious squabbles followed them and up until my generation the family was still split between catholic v protestant. Even weddings couldn't bring them together. My great great grandfather married a protestant. They had 8 children. The boys were brought up catholic. The girls protestant. And yes, all very dark haired.
I have a hankering to go to Ireland again. Haven't been for ages but I used to go a lot

The same Roscommon which is famous for its people, in 2018, fighting off the British thugs who tried evicting Irish citizens from their own homes after the corrupt banks and bankers hired the British to go and kick the Irish out!!
