@@senguptashouvik I agree with you partially. I actually think it is the music director's fault here. There is really no reason or no situation here that requires the song to be on such a high scale. Seems very unnecessary. Even Lataji in an interview said that she never enjoyed singing songs at such insanely high scales and would often quarrel with music composers for giving her such compositions. She even mentions Shankar Jaikishan and a few songs including this one where her ears turned red because of the unusually high scale. She managed it beautifully but I can really see her point.

I've heard her crack on high pitches sometimes. Seriously just listen this song and feel, there would so many points where her voice gets irregular.
I don't think anyone is untouchable except Mohd. Rafi. He sang same song with constant voice at extremely high pitch and feels like he doesn't put any effort unlike this one.

Lataji at the peak of her vocals could take her voice higher than this and in a very smooth manner. Maybe you have not heard her rendition of 'Woh ek nigah kya mili tabeeyatein machal gayeen'.
For your kind information this song is a favourite of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, one of the most musically inclined movie directors. And he also wonders the effortlessness with which Lataji had rendered the high pitch.
First of all I fail to understand why a female singer should be compared to a male singer. Had Meena Kumari ever been compared with Dilip Kumar though both of them were considered to be specialized in tragedy genre.
No word can describe the beauty of this song. Unbelievably high pitch so effortlessly rendered by the Goddess of Music living legend, Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, it is goose bumps throughout the song. We are fortunate to be living in these times and be able to listen !
i saw Arzoo in England in 1966. During interval, Rajendra kumar, Jaikishanji and Hasrat Jaipuriji appeared on stage and we were blessed to see the three legends on stage together in England. And with this film Lataji and Shankarji Jaikishanji hit their peak of their careers. After this film, it was a slow downhill journey for the three legends. Every songs of Arzoo were hit. I even bought LP record of Arzoo songs, despite the fact they were very hard to buy in England in the 60s. This film, its direction, its music , photography and acting has remained in my memory ever since 1966. Finally, my heart felt congratulations to Ramanand Sagarji for creating this masterpiece.

Well, in the video song it's E, because they always make it a sharp higher than what she actually sang in the video song, but my point is that she's sung several songs in much higher keys such as F and even F#, which go extremely high. This song at most goes to G, which isn't that bad for the great Lataji. So no, the scale is not that high for her.

I just want to add the story behind this song as told by none other than Latadidi’s brother Hrudaynath Mangeshkar. Lataji used to take him for few recordings those days. For this song, she asked him to join for one reason. This song was sung by Rafiji in the same movie in the scale of Kali do (D#?). Jaykishanji insisted that she sings in the same scale. For female singers, the scale starts very high. Lataji was not very confident that she will be able to sing the higher notes correctly. She wanted her brother to tell her if they go wrong. The day of the recording, suddenly the rain started. First rain of Mumbai and it was very heavy. The car literally started floating. The driver couldn’t turn it around. Suddenly someone started pushing the car and soon it was out of the trouble. The studio was just about 500 mts away and the all reached their safely. The person who pushed the car was none other than Jaikishanji himself. His was wearing a suit which got soiled but he didn’t bother. In the studio he showered and got ready. The song was recorded in just a few takes and when Lataji asked her brother, he said you sang perfectly. Few people came to meet Lataji after the recording and it seems there was a bet between them that Lataji won’t be able to sing the higher scale Gandhar. But they conceded defeat and said she is Maa Saraswati. Many female singers do sing this song and they sing it well but only Lataji can sing at such high scale effortlessly. We were blessed to hear her in our life time.
