    Notice that he gets into the office early, basically at dawn, to do these videos. He's a hard worker and he knows his stuff. He also has a very down-to-earth attitude about all the weird fripperies that many of these cars come with that actually do have some use at times.

    10:28 My 9mm is too small for this compartment on my SL. I have to put my hand down in there to get the 9 out. The .44 magnum is big enough to retrieve quickly without having to insert my hand down into the compartment. On the other hand, though, the 9 holds twice the number of rounds, has a safety and doesn't kick like a mule. Thanks for closing it gently. Too many reviewers demonstrate their lack of appreciation for fine machinery by slamming it.

      the flashing was the difference in refresh rate between the cluster and the camera. nothing wrong with the car it wouldn't do that in real life.

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just the flash from the backlight, kind of like when you see computer screens flashing on a news clip or video, they aren't warning lights, just the "x1000 rpm" and degrees/temp icons. I have the same issue when recording something on the cluster on my SL like this (sadly it's not a true AMG just an appearance pkg) same thing happens with backlights on my S class and Lexus vehicles, not sure if it's fluorescent backlighting or LED. But great eye noticing that!

      @vahebaldemian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also when you turn the key to the 2nd position or click the start button twice all the cluster lights light uo

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GarageNextDoor agreed! I think it's actually an r170 SLK with either the sport package or it may actually be an slk32 AMG (though not likely given the black door handles), I asked bill to review this also, as I have a silver SLK like this and a lesser version of the car being reviewed here (sl500 with AMG appearance pkg, same wheels), would make my day to see him review that as well!

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GarageNextDoor you can easily own one today! They are beyond inexpensive and you can diy most things, can even rebuild all the hydraulic cylinders yourself with a $20 o ring kit if they ever go bad. Save my channel name and message me if you ever get one I can try to help you with anything you need on it so you can maintain it yourself and if you do they are very reasonable and really has much of what the SL has with very little to go wrong (no ABC, fewer hydraulic cylinders in the top, m111k i4 or m112 v6 are very reliable (in defense of the SL the m113 v8 is VERY good as well (I've had probably 10 cars with that v8 and it's super reliable). Anyways go get one! I've actually read some auction things that state values are on the upswing - something I never thought I'd see after all the years of messing with them - way back in 01-02 early cars had already depreciated significantly and prices were already down to 15-20k so quickly then kept dropping and stabilized in the $3-10k range (only the nicest will be at the upper end with some 10-20 if low miles and/or a 32 AMG), anyways never thought they'd get out of the sub 10k realm but find a good one now and in 5-10 years it will only get more desirable and rare - may never be a true collectors car but will only get more desirable as time passes and more are taken off the road - I'm actually seeing some in local u pull it yards and now have two spare sets AMG sport bumpers and two extra hoods. Anyways sorry- could go on forever, but definitely get one! Will be fun and could even be more reliable than a Miata if you can diy the top hydraulics

  • @KP-zi6jx
    @KP-zi6jx ปีที่แล้ว

    LOVE the overall design of this SL, but the front always left me disappointed as it seemed to have borrowed from the middle-series E-class before it in headlight treatment. It just took it "down-market" right off it seemed. Whereas S-class/SL's were always the leaders in innovation and design direction forward, that then made it's way down to the E's/C's, headlight treatment w/this SL reached lower/E class.

    Such a seminal car. I remember reading about this in CAR magazine and thought the power output was epic. A real throw down to the competition. Modern muscle at It's best and that V8 was far superior to the N/A 6.2ltr that followed it.

    I can afford the car, but I don't think I can afford a brake job on it ;)
    Or a tune up ... which would have to be done at a Mercedes dealership to get it done right.
    Definitely a good deal for someone who would consider spending 75 to 100 grand on a used super car though.

    • @jhawki777
      @jhawki777 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brake job for my 05 S500 was just a couple hundred I think at dealer. New spark plugs was about $600 almost. What are you expecting to pay for a AMG V12? Wouldn't be that much more than what I pay for a V8

    • @nyctreeman
      @nyctreeman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I just looked it up, OEM pads are about $500
      Rotors and Pads, OEM are about $2650
      Labor with necessary computer controlled caliper compression is about $400 ....... that comes to about $3050 for a brake job without taxes.
      I suspect the labor estimate is "optimistic at best".

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nyctreeman hey man I actually own two R230s and you CAN actually maintain them yourself, though I have friends who are techs at the local MB dealership I actually try to do everything not requiring STAR diagnostics myself. Your hardest/most costly thing with these are keeping the ABC suspension working, (accumulators, value blocks, lines, etc) but it can be replaced with normal springs if it comes down to it needing too many repairs. If you like the R230 now is the time to buy as prices have hit a trough. If you get say an 03-04 sl500 it should be very reliable in terms of the engine and trans. Also the convertible top components (hydraulic rams and actuators) can be rebuilt for very reasonable. Don't write off the R230 and if you can do a little DIY and have always wanted one of these then go for it!

      I bought a 2003 SL500 in 2009 with 35K miles. Kept it for four years and drove it a total of only 12K miles. It was a great car but I lost 16K on depreciation and another 16K in repair bills! The only thing that saved me from total disaster was the extended 4 year warranty that I purchased for $4K.
