Do you have a favorite brand of olive oil and about how much per day would be beneficial?

Costco's Kirkland 100% Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil is good. Kirkland Signature brand seems to be okay, too.
Walmart has a couple of brands that are okay.
-Terra Delyssa, with a code on the bottle to trace where it's been.
-DCoop (white bottle green letters and lid) Extra Virgin, Tree to Bottle for salad dressings, etc.
I struggle with histamine intolerance. Soy is a histamine liberator, so eating any of the histamine liberators, eating older foods, or animals fed soy, is an issue for me. Even eggs from chickens fed soy are a problem. If ground beef doesn't say grass-fed on the label, it's going to cause issues.
It doesn't kill me but it makes me miserable for up to a few weeks at a time from a one time exposure. If I push it by ingesting soy or other histamine liberators multiple times over a couple of days to a week, I end up very suseptible to whatever virus is going around and get sick.
Many brands of olive oil are cut with soy after pressing the olives to cut costs and increase profit.
You want to look for single source olive oils. Single source means that there should only be one country listed on the label. It's less likely to have been cut if it was grown, pressed and bottled all in one place. If the olives were grown in Greece, and shipped somewhere to be pressed and then bottled in another place,it makes it hard to be sure it wasnt cut.
Olive oil from California is usually fine.
      Hope this helps someone.

I definitely like the Costco brand organic olive oil!

@draustinperlmutter Sadly, I'm pretty sure the Organic Olive oil is cut with soy oil or sometgoofy,
I struggle with histamine intolerance. The 100% Spanish Olive oil doesn't bother me, but the Kirkland Organic Olive Oil makes me congested and makes my ears goopy, every time. 😢

Love this! Have been incorporating many of your suggestions over the years. You didn’t mention MCT chains in coconut oil. Do you have an opinion on that? I am conflicted on the value of coconut oil because I have heard pros and cons on both sides and my doctor wants me to be careful with plaque buildup after a recent CT Scan of my heart. Would love to hear your thoughts on coconut oil as well. I have been using EVOO for years, and have been cautious in ensuring that the product is single-sourced (country) and not cut with other toxic oils. Thanks!

I've been hearing coconut oil is a saturated fat, so it should be used sparingly, especially if you have plaque on your heart ❤

@@sophie4636 Most of the triglycerides (fats) in cocoanut oil are in the Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) class. There are a few short chain Triglycerides (SCTs) because there can only be a few of anything if it is limited to 5 or 4 or less. So, they are relatively rare. The problem with saturated fat is that it needs to be in a specific ratio with C3 fats. If you would like to know what the fats are saturated with is, it's hydrogen. Allow me to draw you a carbon chain.
      H H H HHHHHH
      H - C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C - H This is a C8 MCT chain.
      HHHHHHHHHH
Notice that every carbon (C) is bonded to at least 2 hydrogens (H) Saturated fats have no double bonds and they are a very stable molecule for that reason. They don't go rancid as quickly as molecules that do have double bonds do. Molecules with double bonds have their own reasons for being suspect and some of them are very bad, however your best bet is to try things in moderation to see how they affect you and you can make an informed decision that way.
My apologies for the crudeness of my C8 chain, it's difficult to do much better with only a plain keyboard.
When it comes to food, I hate all olives and all olive oil. I hate all yogurt in all of it's many subversive ways to find itself sneaking onto real food It's every bit as disgusting as olives. I hate the evil cousin of yogurt who's name is sour cream. It's a 100% projectile vomiting experience. No kidding, I will guarantee you will trigger a vomit episode with me to yogurt and sour cream, but I can weather the storm with olive oil in tiny amounts. I won't like it at all. I almost forgot the disgustingly evil Avocados.

Yes, there's some data for MCTs in coconut oil, but not that much. I think anyone who has concern for lipid issues needs to carefully consider their saturated fat content.

Aren't Cashews a little too high in Omega 6 in relation to the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio if you are consuming a plant based diet?

    • @draustinperlmutter
      @draustinperlmutter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Personally, I don't think that's a big concern. I think omega-6s from real food/plant sources are not as big of an issue as has been suggested

There is some benefit to eat warmwater or low fat fish regularly, since they also have taurine and vitamin D. But fish oil has been shown to be NOT healthy. Omega 3 is non essential and does not have to be consumed or supplemented. Eggs also contain this, but the benefit is higher.

@incrxdible9896 well since you already made up your mind, what's the reason to leave it for you, tho others may read about many fish oil studies, and the work of Dr. Ray peat and Georgi dinkov looking for the term PUFAs.
If you make the effort of actually researching this, you'll be surprised
The deleterious effects of seed oils are long known, and the only difference to an algae and fish oil is the level of rancid and the amount of anti nutrients.
"Boosting your brain" with non essential fats that lead to a smaller brain in feeding mothers and is completely non existent in healthy newborns.
Saturated fats are essential tho, so they have scammed the American healthcare system since the 70s.

Magnesium in nuts is bound by phytic acid, so its not the best source of magnesium. Magnesium is one of the top supplement choices.

There are many studies linking PUFAs and omega 3 to severe health outcomes. Saturated fats are essential, so are omega-9, but every kind of PUFA oxidizes at room temperature, basically becoming rancid. This applies to body temperature of course. Omega3 are antiinflammatory, because they are immunosuppressive. PUFAs are not essential for brain development and seed oils and seeds in particular are just awful nutrition. If youre not living in a cold climate, eating high unsaturated fish is not a good long term health food. Lard, butter, ghee, bone marrow and other stable fats like coconut oil are actually what the brain needs. If one thinks that PUFAs are essential, why does a newborns brain only have saturated fats?.
