    Another great post John ! The older photos seem so much more interesting and vibrant than the upto date locations.

      Thanks very much. I agree with you about the vibrancy of the old photos. Maybe that's why those photos were taken. Many of them were taken at the time of a celebration in the city. We know from other videos that parts of the city were in disrepair.

    You're a fountain of brilliant photographic ideas John. Your "Night and Day" video here is no exception. Fascinating and thought provoking. As always, thank you for the hard work you've put into this.

    Right from the start I was struck by the amount of construction and roadworks going on today. A city is always changing.Good job there are people like your good self recording it all.Thanks

    John, thanks for yet another great video about the Fine City. I've only lived here for 57 years, so I'm obviously too young to remember the "good old days" that a lot of commenters are referring to as being better, but in my lifetime it seems to me that development in Norwich has been on a positive trajectory in general.

    Really enjoyed this video. Interesting to see those properties that were lit up at night in the 1930s. Great stuff John

    This was a brilliant concept! I was surprised to see so many buildings lit up so beautifully in the 1930s. The City looked charming bathed in the soft glow of light. Chapelfield Gardens and the Tram Terminal looked particularly resplendent. Another thing that struck me was the amount of restoration and building work going on in 2023, so this is a plus! A very imaginative, fascinating, and thought-provoking video. Well done!

      Thank you. Let's hope the restoration works. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Haymarket completed, and have a video planned for that time.

      What a cracking and original idea John. Fascinating to see that some scenes haven't changed much, but others it's eh, is that the same place - ? 😊

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simongee8928 that's exactly what I thought Simon. There's something quite satisfying in wat bing something from nearly 100 years ago merge almost seamlessly into 2023, and something quite disconcerting when it's unrecognisable!

    Howard & Son has been a family run quality Fishmonger and game supplier in Norwich, since 1889. The fourth generation of the family now run the business, and still supply quality products at value for money prices.

    I’m not a native of Norwich. I was born and raised in York and left in 2001. But I much prefer my adopted city of Norwich. I think it’s a beautiful city with so many green spaces and hidden gems and so much character. I love it here.
    Those old photos are brilliant. They look so clear and vibrant. The modern ones are lovely as well. Interesting to see how some things have changed dramatically, some places are near the same, and many have sadly gone.
    A really interesting video once again. Thank you. 😊

    Hi John. Loved this. Just shown my mum and we were both very excited to see the old photo of 67 Bethel Street because we used to live there! Is it possible for you to send me a still photo of that so we can have a better look please. Lucille.

      Hi Lucille - well there's a coincidence! It's a George Plunkett photo - here it is georgeplunkett.co.uk/Norwich/B/Bethel%20St%2067%20[1353]%201936-08-30.jpg

    Amazing video John, like a few of the others who have commented, I think we have lost something of our city, maybe its just the bright lights.

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to me that other comparable cities and towns don't suffer to the same extent. My video on graffiti was sent to the city council, but to no avail. I want to use the proceeds from TH-cam advertising on this channel to replace shabby green plaques across the city but can't get a response from the council or Norwich Society. It's disappointing. It would help in a small way to re-establish some pride in the city's appearance.

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich

      I think in this instance though, the old photos were taken to demonstrate night-time excitement. I can't imagine Mr Plunkett visiting the slum areas at night!

  • @kanarykev
    @kanarykev ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sadly (in my opinion) Norwich has deteriorated since the 1960s apart from a couple of exceptions,the Forum is a lovely building and perhaps on the outskirts the Sainsbury centre but a lot of unnecessary building has been unsympathetic and hasn’t lent itself to the character of an old city like Norwich,urban destruction like Grapes Hill was unforgivable and the Anglia Square development still leaves me cold,great posting though John 👍

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I tend to agree. However much of Norwich remains beautiful, and it's a great place to be. King Street in particular, I feel, is developing into a very attractive area, blending the old with the new.

    • @kanarykev
      @kanarykev ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree with the King Street development and totally agree that it’s still a lovely place to live,I don’t disagree with the old with the new if it’s tastefully done but from the 70s to the 90s I don’t think it was (again my opinion) .

    • @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
      @JohnAtkinsLostNorwich  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kanarykev I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Maybe it was the 70s (or 60s) to 90s that was the bleak period for the city's development.
