How to Understand Your Dog Better: Communication Clues
Just like humans, dogs do get into moods and will try to communicate them to you. But it can be difficult to understand what they are saying just by looking at their body language. The great thing about dogs, and all types of dog breeds, is that they will not fake their emotions and they will try to tell you what’s going on. It’s important that as a dog owner, you learn their communication language and watch out for the tell-tale signs that your dog is giving to you. These communication signs can be broken down based on your dog’s physical body, such as the tail, eyes, ears, face and stance.
• Tail: the tail is one of the easiest communication methods to look out for. When a dog’s tail is lowered but still wagging, it can mean that he or she is playful, excited or that they know you are the one in charge. If the tail is lowered and wagging slowly, it could be that they are waiting for you to tell them what to do so that they understand what is currently happening.
◦ If the tail is raised but tremors, it could be your dog challenging you and your authority. If this happens, it means that the dog feels like they are in charge of the current situation and has authority over you.
◦ The most common and easiest recognizable communication form is when the tail is tucked between the legs. This is a very common sign for the dog being afraid, scared or uncomfortable either in the situation you are currently in or even of you. If you cannot discern what is causing your dog to be uncomfortable, and your dog does this frequently, it is a good idea to take them to the veterinarian.

there's a good chance that the dog doesn't know what it means to limp without pain, but it very likely does know that it gets a lot of attention whenever it does. In a manner, there's a lot of incentive to keep acting that way regardless if it understands or not

My dog doesnt have a tail lol its just a little nub, it was docked. And the ears are a bit different bc they're cropped lol so some of these dont really have any use to me

I had a dog who's a 64 pound pitbull terrier, and was suprisingly one of the most gentle and spoiled dog that I've ever had, like literally anything he finds soft he will sleep on and doesn't wake up until I pat him or rub him, I took him to the vet one day and turns out he was diagnosed with down syndrome. I didn't really care that he had it, he'd always been a good dog and I appreciate him for what he is.

This is probably the best beginner's guide to dog body language I've found. They were pretty spot for the most part, but dog body language has a bit more nuance than that. Different signals displayed together can mean different things.
Ears back may mean fear, accompanied with wide eyes and a tucked tail, but they're also a way for an excited or relaxed dog to show respect.
Wide eyes are usually caused by overwhelming excitement or focus. You will have to be firm with your dog in this state to get them to listen.
Eyes so wide you can see the whites are a sign of intense emotion -- usually fear or a need to protect themselves or something they "own", but not always. Dogs who are protective of something, such as food, display this as a warning that they are going to bite. In this case, the pupils may widen as well. That being said, not all intense emotion is inherantly bad. My own dog bugs her eyes when she really, really, really, REALLY wants something. She's not aggressive about it, just intense.
This video is a great springboard for understanding, but not a perfect guide. Every dog is different. Watch your dog using the awareness you learned from this video. Get to know them better, and maybe learn some more about dog body language along the way.😁

I can read my dog very well. I know when he needs attention, when he's hungry or just wants a cuddle. I think because we've had him since he was 9 weeks old I've learned everything about him. He's literally my furry baby. Everything said in this video is right. A dog will tell you everything you need to know just by his/her actions and if you know your dog well it wont be a problem. Thanks for the video, its just making me realise I have the perfect little man in our lives and we love him very very much!

In my family, we cared and talked to the dog since he was a pup, so now he understands certain words or complicated commands (we didn't train him with snacks or anything, after a while he understood on his own). For example; When I say "Koda (his name) where is the mouse?" He immediately searches the area to hunt, or when I say "go the other way" he follows the command, because he is outdoors on a leash and it gets tangled with objects, so instead of running over to untangle him I call out from a distance. Also when he wants something he always looks into my eyes and either barks or does some weird movements with his jaw, as if he wants to talk😂. Man am I proud of my dog
When your dog has floppy ears and a naturally curly tail
It might be harder to notice body language with floppy ears but it's not impossible. Its ears may not stand up from base to tip, but you can still read the movements of the ear at its base near the skull. You can also look at its overall body language: for example a raised head, nose pointing in the distance probably mean it hears something and is focusing its attention in that direction. If it sniffs the air either something is nearby (like a deer, rabbit, etc) or it's just taking in its surroundings since dogs smell better than they see.

Basically, yes. In a pack, the alpha eats first. Other pack members have to wait their turn. Approaching a dog while they eat is a good way to get growled at and bitten.
So, when you are eating the dog may sit quietly nearby waiting for scraps or "it's turn." But when humans see our dogs looking up at us and pet them or give them attention, they think it's okay to approach. When my dog starts touching me while eating and audibly begging for food i just pushed it away and scold it. It might retreat but then it comes back and sits quietly again, which is fine.

One of my dogs has always made a particular face ever since he was a puppy. We call it his "I don't have to listen to you face" and he makes it whenever he knows hes doing something bad or annoying.. but nothing bad enough to get into real trouble. He will scrunch up his snout, showing his teeth, squinting his eyes, but also he has a cocky grin or smile on his mouth, and typically has his tail up and wagging. Sometimes he will do the bow technique by putting his chest to the ground, or he may make this face while rolling over and showing his belly. This also almost always causes him to end up sneezing at you as well.
I always got the.. "I know im not supposed to be doing this or its bugging you... so why dont you come and do something about it like chase me" kind of vibe from it.

My Rottweilers tail was docked. They say because it is for fashion and because they herd a lot and don’t want the tail getting stepped on.

yawning is a stress sign. it can be good stress or bad. when you are training them and they are thinking, they will often yawn. lol they can be bored, or they might be thinking.
good stress is sleepy, thinking, or they often do this when meeting a new friend. they might yawn to show they are not a threat. .
bad stress, scared or nervous . you read dogs by reading their entire body together :)

Dogs are not dominant. What about calming signals? Dogs yawn and lick when they get stressed or try to calm down human beings or other dogs.
It's not about whether the dog is literally dominant in reality. It's about that dog *believing* it's dominant, or vying for dominance.

The trembling, Chihuahua always tremble out of excess energy or the cold. Most of these I can't use because my Chihuahua body he left ear is always down as the ear didn't grow strong enough to hold it up.
I have a boxer he lacks most of a tail
And dogs showing teeth is not always bad either. My dog shows his teeth whenever he's really happy and excited, like when someone comes home. It's an evolutionary trait that is based off us humans, we smile when we're happy. And some dogs just naturally mimic that behaviour.
