At a press conference before it's screening at the 53rd New York Film Festival, director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Ariane Labed discussed their film with NYFF Selection Committee member Gavin Smith.
In the very near future, society demands that we live as couples. Single people are rounded up and sent to a seaside compound-part resort and part minimum-security prison-where they are given a finite number of days to find a match. If they don’t succeed, they will be “altered” and turned into animals. The recently divorced David (Colin Farrell) arrives at The Hotel with his brother, now a dog; in the event of failure, David has chosen to become a lobster… because they live so long. When David falls in love, he’s up against a new set of rules established by another, rebellious order: for romantics, there’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. I find it interesting how open his films are to interpretation. A lot of the questions seem to be very granular regarding the meaning and symbolism of the film and Yorgos is like, "Sure, if that's what you took from it."
He executes on specific ideas, but because his films have a sci-fi / metaphysical quality to them, I think everyone will experience them in very different ways. He says he leaves films open to interpretation so the audience can make sense of the story through their own paradigms. In my opinion, that's what makes a great artist.

He is very apprehensive in the way he delivers himself. Like he is being careful to not be transparent. He wants to remain vague. She is his muse, just plays along with the smoke and mirrors.
