How to Grow Radishes from Seed to Harvest!

- Radishes are one of the fastest and easiest to grow crops. Given their hardy nature and less than 40 days till harvest, they're a great beginner plant to grow and can be enjoyed in so many dishes through the summer! But, if left too long they can quickly get tough and be much less tasty. So, whether it's your first or hundredth time, use these 9 Tips to Grow PERFECT Radishes every time!

In Southern New Mexico, you can plant them year round except you may want to shade them all summer. Sun is brutal and they dry out in a few hours if you don't either water 5 times a day or mulch the top to keep moisture in. This year greenery took a beating with 106* for almost 3 months, even the Chili pepper farms had big trouble. I'm originally from New England and this was a tough learning experience.

Don’t transplant, they are a taproot, sew them directly
I started some radishes in peat pots so I wouldn’t disturb or expose their roots. It worked. Hope this helps!

What is your growing zone ?
S. California. My Chinese Red Meat radishes bolted very quickly, before the bulb even developed. It hasn't been hot here at all. Do you happen to know how I can avoid this in the future?

What’s the secret to preventing maggots from enjoying my radishes before I get a chance to?
Well, maggots won’t get them if you grow the, in planters or raised gardens, I think they have a higher chance of getting your radishes if you plant them in the earth, sprinkle cayenne pepper into the garden so they won’t get it if they do somehow find a way
Can you grow radishes in June or July in zone 7 and still get a harvest?

My radishes get eaten by sow bugs. Any tips to get rid of them
Oh no! I haven't run into any sow bugs myself unfortunately. I would poke around on Google and see what the most common approaches are and use that as the starting point

Tried this method. Didn't thin them and got noting but foliage.
I am in Langley Bc and I am STRUGGLING with rats. I don’t have compost or bird feeders or anything. Just raised beds. And I can’t keep the rats out! Help! What do you do??
Oh no! So for rats they are obviously living elsewhere and then coming into a part of the garden before eating away at something. So, a physical barrier is needed to block them from getting into the garden. Probably the best material to use for this is chicken wire as it's small enough that they can't get through and sturdy enough that they won't be able to eat through it. Furthermore, when establishing new beds you could put chicken wire down at the bottom of the bed covering the ground and this will serve as a physical barrier preventing anything from getting up and through the bed! :)

Ok ok ok! I have a question. Why????? are you touching the soil to check for moisture? Why didn't you mulch for moisture retention?

Hi, I growing them in a pot in India, do all raddish push their head up, my raddish are now 34 days old, heads not showing as yet but the leafy part is very healthy
Interesting! I would keep an eye on them over the next couple weeks, some varieties take longer than others. You will notice it beginning to form soon!
Don’t use fertilizer. Radishes will grow lush greens when fertilized. Also Radishes prefer cooler time of year.
Same exact thing happened to me last year and just read they don’t like nitrogen and all you’ll get is green tops. They prefer depleted nutrient soil. I’ll be using last years soil mixed with leaf compost since both are very low in N. I had all of them in fabric planters with great all new excellent quality soil and got zero.

Woo hoo! Absolutely, it's always a good idea to thin the radishes out so they have enough space to develop and grow well. I usually leave about 1.5 inches between each other. Thanks for watching!
