    If anybody is curious, the channel Coding Secrets is run by the dude who programmed this game. He has a two videos on how he achieved some of the 3D effects in this game (one for the 3D section and one for the 2D sections).

      I love his channel, it's very interesting how programmers were able to get around the limitations of this older hardware.

      Traveler's Tales under him certainly had a knack for interesting technical achievements. Even one of their more infamous games, Rascal, was something of a technical marvel for the PS1 due to it having some pretty detailed visuals for the hardware and being able to run at 60 FPS, a rarity in console (and hell even some PC games) of the era (though it's worth noting Rascal's infamy mostly comes down to bad meddling from the publisher who, rather than use the producer's ideas of making the game play more like Mario 64, forced him to use Tomb Raider styled controls, which hurt the level design too). They also made a game on the PS2 called "Haven" which featured No Man's Sky styled space and planetary travel back in 2002.

    Ah, this game...its manual had what might be the single worst hint in gaming history. I was stuck for ages on the Buzz boss fight, because he is immune to your attacks, there is no in-game hint to tell you how to hurt him, and the manual gives this "helpful" clue: "Keep moving and see if you can tire him out". I spent ages trying to dodge his bouncing around (which is hard as hell) before finally getting frustrated enough to try attacking again, and HAPPENED to be standing in the right spot to hit the tire (which does not move unless you hit it and appears to be a part of the background). Hours wasted because of a damned pun...

    I remember renting it when I was a kid and the odd choices regarding gameplay and visual presentation on the first level and the fact that the camera works so strange and you don't really have an attack and it's not easy to understand what you even have to do on the first level got me thinking this was an actual pirate game. After finding out how to work on the first level and getting further along in the game I could see some of the good stuff but still it's a game that's far from perfect the floaty movement of Woody is real pain in the ass, and all those little projectiles are impossible to dodge. I think the producers of the game where trying to make something like donkey Kong country very much and though the graphics and sound are okay the gameplay is far from being as polished as DKC

    The video game rental difficulty increase is super frustrating as a 16 bit gamer. This is the #1 reason why everyone should own a Game Genie. A good code or two can be the difference between an semi-unplayable mess that leaves you struggling to get to level 2 and a fun, casual playthrough of the game it always should have been.

    This was a decent Super Nintendo game I owned growing up. If you are having trouble in stage 1 go to dresser with army barrel on it and jump into the first open drawer. Press and hold down until your star starts to spin. You are now invincible. Once you successfully do the invincibility cheat if you are still struggling on a stage just press start then select and you will jump to the end of that stage. You really should play the whole game though as it is a decent game.

    The problem of the SNES version is the hit box whip, you can only touch things with the ring of your whip. On Genesis, the hit bow whip is complete. It's make this game much easier and enjoyable to play.

    When I was a kid, I was obsessed with this game. I was already a toy story fanatic in my youth, and would watch let’s plays and even a review from a crummy public access tv show from the 90s over and over again. I even ripped off portions of levels for stories that I wrote. I didn’t even play the game until a year or so ago, and it’s a flawed but really fun way to kill an hour, once you figure out its quirks.

    It seems a lot of people just can't get past the RC car part early in the game even though the controls are pretty simple. they just don't seem to understand that left doesn't mean you're traveling left it means you're turning left and right doesn't mean you're traveling right that means you're turning right. Honestly I think the hardest level on the game is when you're actually racing out of Sid's house and occasionally that stupid dog scud shows up and causes you to have to be in the middle of the screen instead of the left.

      Nah. Cartridges had limited space back then especially. You can beat most games from that era in under an hour if you're good. They didn't want people spending $40+ for a game and beating it in an hour; hence them raising the difficulty.

    The frame rate in that 3D level is amazing for the SNES! Sure, the field of view is really low, and there's some texture warp that would makes the PS1 blush, but holy cow, that is a solid 30+ FPS at what seems to be all times. Compare that to Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Faceball 2000, or Jurassic Park and it's a night and day difference.

    • @kekeke8988
      @kekeke8988 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There aren't any enemies any gunfire or anything of note going on. It's just empty wandering around a maze to pick up aliens.
      It's not comparable to doom by any stretch of the imagination. Unless you wanted to compare it to an empty doom with no guns and no enemies. I bet that would run a solid 30+ FPS too.

      After a while, the controls start to make sense, whip forward once or twice then whip upward to launch the aliens up high and memorize the claw's pattern so that you know when it will grab Buzz then stand just left of there and spam the whip remembering to aim high as well. As long as Buzz doesn't go very far in each cycle the claw won't get him. But if I remember the game correctly, the very last cycle allows you to lose Buzz and still beat the level (since that's basically the story anyway). I could be wrong though.

    I owned Toy Story and The Lion King for SNES as a kid. I'm quite surprised people think of them as super difficult games today. Back then, I was frustrated by Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Ghosts and Ghouls as too difficult to beat games. These were the easy ones for me. It's interesting to hear how other people, and SNESDrunk, encounter them today. Great video as always.

    Well, I know a cheat that will give you infinite lives, and you always take damage but never have to start over. If you go on the first level and go to drawer where you get the army men, go on the middle shelf, get to the right side edge, and crouch for a few seconds, if your lives start spinning you've performed it correctly. Don't know if this only works on snes, but that's just my experience.

  • @mightyfilm
    @mightyfilm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You certainly can't accuse this game of being a rushed cash grab with a license slapped on it. It's like every significant short sequence of the movie was made into an entire level. Woody and Buzz sneaking into Pizza Planet in fast food wrappers was like, what, 10 seconds of screentime if any? Even made a level based on Sid burning a hole in Woody's head, even though the cereal he dunks his head in is the one inaccurate thing in the game.

    I've never really played this game very much, but I do have a memory of it. I was in a Toys R' Us in 1996 checking out Super Mario 64. (Mario can do karate now?!) When I grew tired of waiting for a turn on the display, I wandered down the game aisle and saw the SNES display with a copy of Toy Story plugged in. There was nobody at this display on account of the SNES being old news now and Toy Story having released the previous year, unlike the N64 which had a small crowd. I entertained myself for a bit, marveling at the 3d looking scrolling background and large, detailed sprites.
