Jackie is her lover that was lost at sea and she’s not wanting to accept that he’s not coming back so she still searches the shore for him. This is most hauntingly beautiful and heart wrenching song ever sung by one of the best artists that ever existed.
Thank you! I can’t tell you excited and grateful I am that you are listening to Sinead’s albums. Lion & the Cobra was a Grammy-nominated album, Sinead wrote the songs between the ages of 15-19 (wrote Jackie at age 15!!), and recorded the album at 20 and pregnant. You are going to LOVE this album! Thank you again. :)
Ah, so glad you’re diving into this brilliant ladies legacy. You are right about the Siouxsie reference. In her early years she was in fact one of her influences and she has mentioned her several times through the years. The lion and the cobra is probably one of the best 80’s albums and it stood out for not sounding like anything else at that time, in fact it did not even sound 80’s. Every song on this record is amazing. As you go through her catalogue you will notice how much her voice changes. It becomes more gentle and fragile and then later in her career at times she returns to that earlier haunting sound (take off your shoes is a good example).
As a statement of intent its amazing. I beleive its a sing to a lover lost at sea. Wait till you hear her singing on the 3rd track Jerusalem...it blew me away
This is one of my favorite Sinead songs! It's an amazing opener to an incredible album, and what an introduction to Sinead it was! She really was an amazing talent. Much love and respect for her. RIP Sinead.
Wow, so happy that you're able to do this album! This opening song sets the tone for the whole album: raw, emotional, pure magic. All her other albums are just insipid, tame and lacklustre compared to this one (though still enjoyable enough, mind). The girl who haunts the beaches, salting them with her tears, waiting for her long lost boyfriend to return (Jackie being an endearing term for Jack, who went to sea and never came back), even though she herself has now been dead for years and years. It doesn't get any better. Oh wait it does: there's a whole album of this stuff, yeay!
Sinead does the best "lost love" songs, and this is a chilling ghost story, in which all the characters portrayed are dead, including (tragically true now) the first-person character of the woman searching the shores for centuries for her lover, lost at sea. The song "Troy" on the same album is even better, I think its her best song of all, better even than "Nothing Compares 2 U" which wasn't written by her, but which she made into such a huge success. "Troy" has an amazing story arc that is a roller-coaster of emotions !
Beautiful and haunting! Jackie left on a cold, dark night Telling me he'd be home Sailed the seas for a hundred years Leaving me all alone And I've been dead for twenty years I've been washing the sand With my ghostly tears Searching the shores for my Jackie-oh I remember the day the young man came He said, "Your Jackie's gone He got lost in the rain" And I ran to the beach And laid me down "You're all wrong," I said And they stared at the sand "That man knows that sea Like the back of his hand He'll be back some time Laughing at you" And I've been waiting all this time For my man to come Take his hand in mine And lead me away To unseen shores I've been washing the sand With my salty tears Searching the shore All these long years And I'll walk the seas forever more 'Til I find my Jackie-oh 'Til I find my Jackie-oh 'Til I find my Jackie-oh Jackie-oh
Thanks for the lyrics, Nikola. Also did you see my email about Joni? I was ready to start the deep-dive but the first folder in the larger umbrella folder has no tracks. Also I noticed something you shared a long time ago but I don't think I ever reacted to: Kate & Anna McGarrigle (I might be getting that name wrong), but the link was broken. Did I wait too long on that one? Lastly, no Siouxsie this morning but they'll be in the next batch. Cheers, my friend.
@@mattsnider2667 oh I'm on it. Will get it fixed within the hourI'll check all the Joni folders . Btw it's Kate & Anna McGarrigle, they are a folk duo from Canada who are sisters so no connection to Kate Bush :). I'll fix those folders too.
Great reaction. I can remember hearing about Sinead from fellow Kate-fans before the disc came out; rushed out an bought it as soon as it appears in the stores. Grad school, those were the days. This was the first song of Sinead's that I heard, and I was instantly sold. Her first two records are absolutely solid from the first song to the last, I give the edge very narrowly to the second. Everyone talks about how emotional her performance is on "Nothing Compares 2 U". Which isn't wrong by any means. But you'd better buckle up for "Black Boys on Mopeds" and "Three Babies." Well, for most of "I Do Not Want"
estos dos álbumes son geniales pero universal mather...tambien lo es...fire and babilon...q es d ese album es de otro mundo...y las canciones del album faith and courage todas son geniales...y el resto d sus albumes sin dignos de un catalogo clasico y exclusivo.
THANKS! I forgot how good the song is if you keep making reactions to the album, great! but maybe you make a stop at "You made me the thief of your heart" ?! and funnily enough there is also a song by ABBA covered by her : Chiquitita...really good
For some reason I have a folder of an Irish band called Clannad. I am not a big fan, so I don't know why I have it. I will add it to one of the drives if you are interested though.
Though I suppose you merely said they were Irish, not necessarily that they play that type of music. Sorry if I misunderstood, but the answer is still "yes."
@@mattsnider2667 It is Gaelic (you only like it because it sounds like gay lick) folky music mostly. I think it starts in the 70s and goes to the 90s. I will add it to one of the drives.
There is a female Man City fan who is very well known that goes to games and is known as.........t*ts out Jackie. Those who have witnessed this wish that they hadn't.
May be my favorite song from hers. So haunting and darkly beautiful. Simply stunning.
Hell yeah, youre just getting started on the greatness. The album has some legendary tracks.

This song was my first introduction to Sinead way back when. I can tell you it was pretty cathartic.

Her voice!! I love Troy, also from this album..it ripped my soul out! Not made a reaction video of that song,i think? You made so many😅
I just started this album, so no, that one lies ahead of us. Cheers!
Ahh, besides Madinka and Troy, the rest is a bit foggy,so i will enjoy the rest of the album with you then! Thanx for posting and sharing!

@@lisashorter1950 I know but I was talking about the she who is the female part of this story, not Sinead.

Beautiful and haunting!

Telling me he'd be home
Sailed the seas for a hundred years
Leaving me all alone
And I've been dead for twenty years
I've been washing the sand
With my ghostly tears
Searching the shores for my Jackie-oh
I remember the day the young man came
He said, "Your Jackie's gone
He got lost in the rain"
And I ran to the beach
And laid me down
"You're all wrong," I said
And they stared at the sand
"That man knows that sea
Like the back of his hand
He'll be back some time
Laughing at you"
And I've been waiting all this time
For my man to come
Take his hand in mine
And lead me away
To unseen shores
I've been washing the sand
With my salty tears
Searching the shore
All these long years
And I'll walk the seas forever more
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh
