Forgotten just how talented Dudley was. We are force fed so much talentless crap on tv nowadays . Big brother, the Essex program and bloody love island all shite.👍👍👍👍👍
I'm sorry but Victor Borges was much funnier and especially Hungarian rhapsody far surpass dudley in musical comedy. So uh I see similar dilution here. Does that make you feel a little less superior? I really don't feel this way but I want to try out how being an arrogant prick looking down at everything current would feel. It feels silly. And intensely stupid. Like brexit.
One has to be a master before you can fool around like that. Just like Tommy Cooper, or even Les Dawson. The overall result is not additive, it is a product of the two talents, musicianship genius and comic genius.
We'll just take the playing ability for granted because we all know how good he was - but the increasingly desperate expression on his face as he struggles in vain to get to the end is priceless.
So great to see this again. It never gets stale ~ always fresh, brilliant and surprising. What a combination of virtuosic mastery of the piano and comic genius. He and Victor Borge.
I LOVED this man. What a brilliant performance. I don't think HE even knew how wonderful he was. Always wanted to meet him, I loved his smile and his voice also. Miss him SO much. 🌹
Absolutely fantastic what a great comedian and musician he surely is missed by me it's likely we'll never see another genius such as Dudley Moore (sadly) he was just brilliant 👏
A really great allrounder, the likes of which is not to be found today. He and Peter Cooke were a partnership ' made in paradise'. Dudley Moore always knew where the limits were and how he could exceed them to joyous effect. Amazing.
I am aware of two versions on this on TH-cam - this version and an earlier, somewhat blurry, black and white version. In this performance Dudley Moore allowed himself to 'play the fool', while in the earlier version he performed it much more 'seriously' and allowed the comedy of the music to shine by it's own light. Personally I believe the earlier performance was the funnier, due to Moore just allowing it to work for itself.
I agree completely. Neither the host nor the audience here is nearly as discerning, either, and that may be why he made it a broader comic performance. He 'read the crowd'. The other version, for the curious, is here: th-cam.com/video/GazlqD4mLvw/w-d-xo.html
The black and white performance is a clip taken from ‘Beyond the Fringe’ recording. The serious performance adds to the satire. Unfortunately the available free uploads are not on the best definition. Here’s the full performance of the show: th-cam.com/video/qPCm6pRCSmQ/w-d-xo.html
I don't get what you mean by 'NO TV audience now would get this'? I think they would! I would! It appears to me it is the TV Executives that have decided we won't get it and therefore are not taking the risk to show it. But - for example, Bill Bailey stills packs West End theatres et al often with musical comedy of a not dissimilar ilk to Dudley - there is definitely a big audience for this type of comedy being done well.
He just knocked out this old routine of his, off the wrist in three and a half minutes, on the Wogan Show one night. Fresh as a daisy. He was being interviewed about something else entirely. Dud was THAT great.
Agreed. In many ways it is a love letter to Beethoven. I suspect Beethoven would immediately want to jump to the piano and try & one-up Dudley with something even more preposterous! "You thought that was a long coda? You ain't heard nothing yet!"
Kinda makes me think of Roy Clark. Another brilliant musician that had the ability to play incredibly difficult things while being funny. They both obviously loved what they were doing 😊
Dud is playing it entirely for laughs here. Just watch the original from "Beyond the Fringe". In the original he was also playing it for laughs, but the audience was more sophisticated then, his technique was sharper and the parody was clearer, the piece flowed better and the ending - well that was just classic Beethoven.
@@pipster1891 No, it’s not canned laughter but real and mostly inappropriate. This is from the BBC Wogan show which always had a large studio audience.
Some celebs are quite smart. Along with Moore here, Brian May the guitarist from Queen has a PhD in astrophysics(!), Dolph Lundgren has a masters in chemical engineering, and Robert Vaughn had a PhD in political science. Shaq even has a real Doctorate in Education.
I ran a bath overflowing with bubbles. That prompted me to ask Google where Dudley was today. Sadly, he died (yesterday?) I loved Arthur. I'll rewatch now.
Genius comes with a devastating price.....the vast majority of the public just laugh.....fuck that. I hope that Dudley is happy and peaceful in his next life.
I saw him do it live, to roomful of musicians and their families. Well actually three versions, short (30 second), normal 3:30 is, and long about 15 minutes (blame the audience, offered the short, and cheered so much he felt compelled to do the normal, so the audience demanded MORE, and got it).
No canned laughter, that was the 400 audience in the BBC Television Theatre laughing along at his performance. This was probably one of his stand out moments playing this piece on any television show. He had the audience in the palm of his hand.
If there is an afterlife, I bet Beethoven was watching Dudley's performance of this routine and loving every moment of it.
Forgotten just how talented Dudley was. We are force fed so much talentless crap on tv nowadays . Big brother, the Essex program and bloody love island all shite.👍👍👍👍👍

I haven't watched any TV for over a year, so much dross, so much brainwashing too
The very best genius comedy musician!!! He is sorely missed.
Not forgetting Victor Borge :)
Absolute genius! It makes the later part of his life seem even sadder. Far better to remember him at his peak like this. Thanks for posting.
The man. The myth. The legend. Dudley FREAKING Moore, ladies and gentlemen.
Just fantastic. He had a real connection with the piano that was clear for all to see, but also the amazing ability to bring humour.
Brilliance ..... and all the while looking like a naughty or mischievous schoolboy. What a delight to watch.
GENIUS....with Victor Borge...the cleverest and most original humorists😊...certain that Ludwig himself would have been in stitches😊
Which is greater, the comedy genius or the technical mastery of the piano?
The genius is that he's getting laughs doing something so accomplished.
One has to be a master before you can fool around like that. Just like Tommy Cooper, or even Les Dawson. The overall result is not additive, it is a product of the two talents, musicianship genius and comic genius.
@@29brendus Dudley Moore was organ scholar of Magdalen College Oxford, one of the greatest organ scholarships in Oxbridge.
Or the sloppiness of the canned laughter

Dudley was so talented. 💖💕💓❤💜💚💙🧡💛💔
Magnificent. I remember so well how he made my Mum laugh.
Love this man so much. So happy I can watch this again and again 🥰
My goodness he was so talented!!!❤
He really captures Beethovens expression and style. Dudley was talanted.
Dudley Moore wasn't "talanted"-he was highly talented.
OMG I do not believe we will ever see this level of genius again. We have long since reached both peak brilliance and peak parking.
We'll just take the playing ability for granted because we all know how good he was - but the increasingly desperate expression on his face as he struggles in vain to get to the end is priceless.
Oh Dud, thanks for making me smile tonight, what a lovely talented man x
that was not only brilliant, it was hilarious. Dudley Moore was a master pianist! holy shit!
Composer too, I have a CD of his music from a film where he also starred, Six Weeks but it was a drama, not comedy
He was an organ scholar so could play excellently before he went up
@spinning head More accurately he was organ scholar at Magdalen College Oxford. And there is no such place as Oxford uni.
So great to see this again. It never gets stale ~ always fresh, brilliant and surprising. What a combination of virtuosic mastery of the piano and comic genius. He and Victor Borge.
What a brilliant and creative comedic pianist,he brings to mind another great entertainer,Victor Borge..Both sadly no longer with us.Roly 🇬🇧.
I LOVED this man. What a brilliant performance. I don't think HE even knew how wonderful he was. Always wanted to meet him, I loved his smile and his voice also. Miss him SO much. 🌹
True work of genius.
One of my all time favourite people!
I saw him in Beyond The Fringe at the Fortune Theatre about 1960
Moore was truly a fine musician, his grasp of the fugato form starting at about 1:22 is masterful, if too brief.
Came here because this was referenced in the book “Beethoven For A Later Age” so glad I did. Genius!

I'm pretty sure this audience was laughing on cue
Incredible talent and comic genius
Bravo! Dudley and Victor Borge'...geniuses!!
I agree, absolute genius what a sad loss! I could listen to him for ever!

Look at those hands! And the finest corpsijg laugh in history. A great man.

If this was repeated prime time today, it would show how poor modern talent is.
Dumbed down 😁

Terry Wogan (back ground) was absolutely killing himself over Cudley Dudley performance..
Grande! Non sapevo che fosse così talentuoso al piano!

BRILLIANT! And not a sheet of music to read from!
What’s wrong with reading music?

I heard that live in Hamer Hall 2019 with Piers Lane on the piano. He improvised with Moonlight Sonata toward the end

Priceless gem.
This is astonishingly good.

I can't help thinking that Beethoven would have enjoyed this. It's hilarious but, to my ear at least, never mean.

The laugh track ruins this. Think of how much talent and effort Moore put into crafting this performance only to have the audio mutilated like that.

The sad thing is that with music being so dumbed-down in 2018, audiences today wouldn't have a clue that this is a parody.

@@monkeyceo3230 that’s the thing about genius parody, it can pass for real

Beethoven???
Just watched a Ted Talks with pianist James Rhodes...he takes this arrangement and tries to pass it as his own. Such a shame people bought into it.
There are a lot of phoneys around - especially in the entertainment business
What's a parody?
A copy of someone's style for laughs.
