    Dubrovnik is amazing, the moment you step inside the walls it's like being transported into the past and into a fairytale! Yeah, crowds are huge, but I can understand everyone's desire to visit it. Pity you didn't do a wall walk, it offers stunning views, but I guess there was no time for everything. And btw your guide was real eye candy :)

    You said correct informations, i will put a few more that are peculiar. Dubrovnik had its trading post(a town) in india, they had big trading navy and fue thousands sailors. Also they were aristocratic republic(no king), similar like Venice, but dubrovnians were croats and spoke croatian language. Also the Dubrovnian republic streched from ston in the west till about todays border with montenegro. Also they had Island of Mljet and and lastovo. They were very rich and fortified its state and paid tributes to have peace. In their western border they made like mini china wall near town of ston(check it on google, its amazing, its 5.5 km long with 40 towers and 5 forts) that strechets from the sea to do mountians, it covers whole their western border. They gained independence in 1358 when Hungarian-Croat kingdoom(we enter in personal union with hungary after our last king died and had no children and his wife was hungarian princess) defetaed venice and retaken control over whole dalmatia, so then Dubrovnik got independenece in 1358. It was flourishing in renesiance till the great earthquqke, after that dubrovnik never regained former wealth and prestige.

      Stop telling lies!!!
      “Dubrovnik”, which is a reference to the Republic of Ragusa, its real name, was an Italian maritime republic founded by Romans who had escaped the medieval invasions of the Slavs and Avars. Ragusa was an ancient Roman city which inherited its language and culture from Rome, and modeled its institutions on Venice. The official language was Italian; the nobility and representatives were Italian; the names were Italian; and the culture itself was Italian. Slavic was initially spoken only by immigrants and refugees who began to pour into Ragusa's territory following the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans in the 15th century; the Ragusan Senate banned their language in 1472 in a desperate attempt to preserve the Italian character of the country. For a millennium Ragusa belonged to the Latin and Italian cultural sphere and had nothing to do with Croatia or the Slavic world.

      @@Caleidus You are wright and wrong in the same time. For example in Croatia the official language of Croatian parliament and schooling was latin, Croatian was official only from 1848, but also Hungarian was official for some time and German also. That does not mean that Croats were Romans, Hungarians or Germans but latin language was remain of middle ages and we were part of big empire that included Austria and Hungary and we were under their influence, but we were Croats and spoke Croatian at home, but in institutions of the state there was a lot of Latin, German and Hungarian. Dubrovnik was an ethnic and cultural mixture but majority of population were Croats. It was normal that Latin was official at the time. The city was first part of Roman Empire(west and east(Byzantium)), Eastern Roman empire proclaimed first Croatian king governor of Dalmatia, and King Stephen King of Dalmatia, so they incorparated these cityies of dalmatia in Croatian kingdoom and settled a lot of Croatian slavic population in dalmatian Cityies and near them. In the beggining all of these cityies were roman but till the end of 11. th century the mayority of inhabitatns of these cityies were croatian.when pope Aleksanadar 3. visited Zadar in 1177, population of zadar welcomed him singing songs in croatian language. I want to say that language of the common people in great mayority was croatian, but Latin and other language were used id administration in whole Croatia untill. 19. th century due to prestige and foreign influence. In Ragusa for example, almost the whole litterature and poetry in 16. th century was written in Croatian language. And some arab explorer in 12. th reffered to ragusa as the most south croatian city. So great mayority of population was Croatian and wrote a lot of poetry and litterature and in Croatian language, but due to prestige and foreign influence the language of administration was first latin, later italian.

      None of the observations you can find below was written by an italian:
      “Ragusa, like all the other major cities of Dalmatia, has Roman origins: the ancient citizens, who were later distinguished by attaining the status of nobility, came from Epidaurus. Their names are predominantly Romance and for a long time maintained their Latin type: Bonus, Calenda, Fuscus, Geminianus, Lamponins, Lampridins, Lupus, Maurus, Primus, Proculus, Sabinus, Sergius, Urmis, Ursatius, etc. The church of Ragusa was always Latin. ... Slavs only came later, and slowly so. Among the numerous Ragusan citizens listed in the deed of St. Mary's Monastery on the island of Lacroma from the time of Emperor Basil II (976-1025), there are only two Slavic names.”
      -Konstantin Jireček, Die Bedeutung von Ragusa in der Handelsgeschichte des Mittelalters, Almanach der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Volume 49, 1899
      “The old Latin or Roman population of the cities was not however crushed out of existence by these calamities. ...the fugitives from Epidaurus settled on an isolated rock not far from their ancient home, where they founded the city of Ragusa... From this time forward Dalmatia presents the spectacle of two distinct peoples living side by side, of different race, language, customs, and aspirations, and to a certain extent with different religious proclivities. In the towns of Zara, Traù, Spalato, Ragusa, and Cattaro on the mainland, and those of Arbe, Veglia, and Ossero on the islands, were the Romans, or as they came to be called Dalmatians, in contra-distinction to the Croats or Serbs, speaking their ancient tongue, governing themselves by their old Roman law, electing their own magistrates and bishops, and preserving the traditions of the municipalities of the empire.”
      -T. G. Jackson, Dalmatia, the Quarnero and Istria, 1887
      “The old Latin, or Roman, population, however did not disappear, nor did it lose its identity and become merged in the ranks of the Slav conquerors. When the first shock was over in 614 AD, the Romans either returned to their old towns or founded new ones, where they managed to live in a state between independence and vassalage till they became strong enough in time to take care of themselves. "Zara" soon rose again from its ruin, the fugitives from Epidaurus settled on an isolated rock not far from their ancient home and founded the city of "Ragusa"...
      In the old Roman cities the old Roman traditions, and no doubt the old Roman stock survived the shock of Slavonic conquest, and though the Croat was lord outside the city walls and beyond the narrow territory claimed by the citizens, within the gates the Dalmatian people retained their old Roman customs, governed themselves by the old Roman law, and spoke the old Latin tongue, which they still speak at the present day in its modern form. Those who have not acquainted themselves with Dalmatian history are apt to think that the Latin fringe which borders the slavonic province has derived its language and customs from Venice, to which it was so long subject. Nothing can be farther from the truth; Zara, Spalato, Traù and Ragusa were Latin cities when as yet Venice was not existent, and they remained Latin cities throughout the middle ages, with very little help from her influence until the fifteenth century......
      -T. G. Jackson, Dalmatia, the Quarnero and Istria, 1887
      “Some from the beginning were Roman colonies, some arose, phoenix-like, out of the ashes of older towns, as Venice and Grado from Aquileja, and Ragusa from Epidaurus and Salonae. For everywhere in the latter days of the empire the Italian inhabitants, flying from their old towns and the more inland parts before their barbarian invaders, began to take refuge in those spots...and preserved to them, even in those early times, the means of procuring some of the refinements of more civilized life... Thus latterly the once widely extended Roman “province of Dalmatia” came to consist of seven such towns on the coast, or in the islands, viz.-Ragusa, Spalato, Trau, Zara on the former; and Veglia, Ossero, Arbe in the latter. They retained-as it were, in proof of their descent-(1) their language, though somewhat metamorphosed, the Latin of the classics gradually degenerating, until it caught a new life and again flourished as Italian of the middle ages; (2) their superiority in civilization, by means of which they were enabled to maintain themselves in very difficult circumstances and amongst semi-barbarous neighbours; (3) their original political constitutions, which, springing from the Roman commonwealth, were formed on the republican model, like the other Italian commonwealths of the middle ages. Hence, as might be expected from their origin and past history, these towns abound in old Italian and Roman families...”
      -William Frederick Wingfield, A Tour in Dalmatia, Albania and Montenegro, 1859
      “Ragusa is built in the Italian style, and assimilates with the Italian towns, both in the customs and language of its inhabitants.”
      -Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, Volume 23, 1845
      “Venice, Genoa, Luca and Ragusa are Italian Free States. ... Ragusa (in times past Epidaurum) is in Dalmatia, Italianated in language and conditions.”
      -Samuel Purchas, Purchas his Pilgrimes, Volume 1, 1625
      “...the present race animosity between Croat and Italian is deplorable. The Croats, [today] being in the majority, are using their power to oppress the Italian-speaking portion of the population. The schools are now all Croat, and the Italians have no means of instruction for their children in their own language except at Zara. At Spalato the race feeling is especially bitter... The Italian theatre was burnt down some years ago...”
      -Frederick Hamilton Jackson, The Shores of the Adriatic, the Austrian Side, 1908
      “The whole extent of Dalmatia comes to less than 5,000 square miles...and not a single one of its numerous fine cities can be pointed out as of [anything] other than Roman or Italian character and derivation. With Balkan tribes and the Slavonic type of life its connection is much later, and was long limited to the mountain districts. Rome and Venice have shaped its history, inspired its literature, and created its art. The [Dalmatian] city-states could learn nothing from a people like the Slavonic invaders, since these did not even take kindly to the Byzantines who ruled them while they formed part of the Eastern Empire.”
      -William Barry, The Dublin Review, Volume 164, April-May-June 1919

      You want to give the idea that Dubrovnik (none called Dubrovnik Dubrovnik in 1358) was a kind of slavic/croatian town which gained its independence after fighting against the evil Venice (Italian).
      The fact is that Repubblica di Ragusa was more latin (italian) in its identity than many other italian city- including Venice.
      How do you explain this?
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragusan_nobility
      If you go through the list of Ragusan senators who attended the last session of their Greater Council, the one in which it was announced that the glorious republic was dissolved (Aug. 29, 1814): of a little over forty incontestable Italian names of the senators, only one is of Croatian origin: Marino Domenico, count of Zlatarich.
      Ragusa, officially known as Dubrovnik only from 1919 on.
      Ragusa has been an independent republic governed since the Middle Ages by a Latin/Illirian oligarchy. When it was abolished in 1808 by the Napoleonic army, the small but influential and immensely rich maritime republic left a gigantic archive in which all government documents were written, first in Latin, then in Italian “volgare” and finally in modern Italian (the Republic had an office in charge of translations from Slavic vernacular). In the daily business of the government and in diplomacy - Ragusa had over 80 consulates in every major European and Middle Eastern city -, the official language of the small republic was Italian. Furthermore, The Republic of Ragusa is remembered as ''The fifth Maritime Republic of Italy'' (with Venice, Pisa, Amalfi and Genoa). For centuries, the well-to-do Ragusan families sent their children to study in the Italian universities. Across the Adriatic sea, Ragusans had daily contacts with Italy. The celebrated libraries of Ragusa were full of Italian editions of every kind, but no books printed in Serbo-Croatian language.

      @@Caleidus In that time, begining of 20.th century was italian desire to incorporate dalmatia to italy. So we should look conclusion of non bias historyians, and modern historyans, not old one. Two examples, by the end of 14. th century Croatian was predominant language of peope living in ragusa, also in begining of 16. th century, Marko Marulić wrote Judita in Croatian language to encourage people of Split and dalmatia to fight against Turks and Marko Marulić was part of aristocracy of Split. Archbishop of spalato was Metropolitan archbishop in Croatain kingdom from 925-1102. Also you had monastery in zadar and the main nun was sister of croatian king Zvonimir and they wrote books in glagoljica, type of letter made by ciril and methodius for slavic people. The whole mediteranium was a part of Roman Empire and has roman origins, but Roman empire collapsed and new settlerd arrived. Dalmatia was melting pot of cultures. There was too many Croats and for fue centuries Croatain was predominant language in Ragusa, Split, Zadar... You can google this if you want...

      Actually Dubrovnik didn't have much to do with Venice, they were not very much influenced by them and unlike most Dalmatian cities, Dubrovnik was not founded by Italians. Dubrovnik hated Venice so much they took a part of their land called Neum and gave it to Turks because they didn't want to share a border with Venetians. That's the reason why Croatia is separated in 2 parts and why Bosnia has a little entrance to the Adriatic sea.

    You guys do such great videos capturing the countries you go to so well, enough to make us want to explore these places for ourselves. I would like to know if travelling to Croatia solo, are the cruises worth doing? Do you get enough time to explore fully? and for a solo person, are the boat rooms big enough for 2 random people to share? Looking to do a trip through Croatia and or the Balkans.

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - appreciate that. This cruise might not cater to singles as much, we're not sure sorry. If you're up for smaller boats and less luxury there's plenty of other options with Sail Croatia but it's a younger crowd, catering for singles a bit more. We found both options to have a good option of relaxing and exploring, not as immersive as typical travel of course but enough

    Croatia is definitely on my top 10 bucket list countries to go to. You said in the beginning your tour guide gave you advice about what the locals do. Do you all normally get a tour guide first or explore on your own, or does it depend on the country? It seems like a tour guide might be a way of easing into the culture and getting the inside scoop guess both ways have their fun/

    • @DanegerAndStacey
      @DanegerAndStacey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because we were on the 7 day cruise there was a guide giving us intel on each place, then they offer the chance to take excursions. So we booked a walking tour around town to get some more history. So really does depend on where we are and how much info we already know
