I think people need to somehow realize that making films are not always for entertainment. We are so conditioned to watching films expecting to be entertained. Terrence's films are not like that. It is meant to captivate the viewers through pure visual poetry. His films are abstract - they're closely tied to the viewer's minds in establishing an abstract meaning to the viewer itself. That is how Terrence expresses his message. Every camera angle, movement and setting is meant to evoke a feeling - as opposed to the conventional ways of films such as the use of dialogue.
As a huge fan of Malick, I was utterly disappointed with this incoherent mess. Unfortunately the beautiful cinematography doesn't justify sitting through this movie.
Yes, likewise, and I get that his movies are often a sort of audio/visual "tone poem", which can be extraordinary, as in Days of Heaven. But IMHO everything he's done afterwards is starting to look and feel like much the same "poem", and almost to the point that it begs a parody of his "style"!
+Ruslan Nurimbetov the cinematography is always lush and well defined i suppose you could alternately say MALICK has that art house sense to him or just a terrible sense of spacial relations !! looks promising ENJOY!!
It's about realizing - reality and the lack of it, and our place in it and where you want to be in it. What you think you want. Or the lack of wanting anything when the entire world is yours. It makes you think about your own path in this world. Fate or not.
This may be off topic in a way, but I understand your comment in my own experience , it was a time in my life when I began going to a wonderful Bible believing church, and after the first year of learning and coming to love Jesus so much that I saw different, truly felt myself in a different realm and your comment made me think of this...
Something about Malick's work that I love, you can relate to what the characters are going through but without everything being spelled out. For example Christian Bale's character has lost the meaning of life, surrounded by fake, sycophantic people, yet at the same time there is something in the world out there that will save him. Beautiful.
When I saw Terrence Malick's work for the first time I was dumbstruck. Somehow he captured that feeling I had inside me as I moved through life. I always felt in awe of the experience of being alive, and the force that was pushing me through it. My life has gone downhill over the decades so I no longer really feel it anymore unfortunately. But to me, the truest thing i've ever seen is a Terrence Malick film.
I write and direct films myself and Terrence Malick's work is a poetic inspiration! The experience of life is pretty amazing. We get desensitized to it as time goes on. But it's still there for us when we truly want to embrace it and great art like film and music can take us back to that place as well. A poetic rumination on the ecstasy of life! Malick's film are faith centered without being heavy handed about it and I truly appreciate his vision!
The trailer almost brought me to tears. I can't say that for any other trailer that I have ever seen. I can't wait for the film, I love Terrence Malick. One of the greatest dorectors of all time.
Really liked the movie. The internal struggle and voiceovers makes it very real to me. I think it has been clear no matter wat position in life you have of how much money, it doesn't mean the (psychological) battle is fake or not sincere. Watching a Terrence Malick film is like doing heroin and acid while self-reflecting in dimly lit room and debating philosophy with a lonely woman as you watch a Fall sunset and let life happen completely in the moment.
I thought it was common knowledge that Terrence Malick was known for making shit movies. Do you like Huey Lewis and The News? ... Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor ... In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
Majin Buu I couldn't have put it better myself, my friend. It was the epitome of pretentious, hipster art shit, with the exception of maybe three real valuable sentences and one insanely talented Natalie Portman.
+A regular everyday halfbird guy with a long name : thx for the frank review. Looks like I'll wait for a good album to come out, and watch this movie on mute while the music plays. Except when Natalie Portman comes on.
+quetzal785 yeah man. Watching the trailer feels like what I imagine a bad trip on LSD would be like...kinda. Wouldn't be surprised if it#s gonna be a good movie, though.
+Ice Cat That's the thing about Terrence Malick; he makes movies that move you to tears. Whether they're tears of joy or tears of boredom is always a coin toss.
This movie is actually about Malick himself and what happened to him when he achieved success as a screenwriter, it's not a movie like The Wolf of Wall Street, it's a reflection essay on his past experiences in visual form. Malick has a habit of making movies based off his own life, such as Tree of Life which is roughly based on his childhood in Texas, and To The Wonder which is literally the story of his first wife from France and how he met his second wife.
Whether or not you like terrence malick's movies or not, you've got to respect him as one of the greatest living directors. no other director makes films like this.
+jed52 it would suck, it would be about how han solo saved the galaxy and got the princess and had everything in life but became a moping mellodramatic...the cinematography would be beautiful, but it would still put 90% of the audience to sleep before it was over.
First song: Boomerang - "Let Tomorrow Burn" Second song: Boomerang - "Farfalla" Boomerang is a Los Angeles based music company/record label. So finding the songs will be hard.
A movie about a man traveling to the finest beaches, pools, and aquariums the world has to offer. About damned time they made a movie about Aquaphiles and how they truly suffer for their passion for WATER!!!!
+Zabs McGee actually this is the meaning. travelling to the finest beaches pools etc does nt satisfy soul. his wife, Cate is a doctor, her patients are minority people, saw the healing path, he has to learn
This film is deep and actually i missed cinema that is mesmerizing. Definitely underrated movie. And definetelly not for masses. What's special about this movie is that it acts as meditation. Makes you go philosophical. If you have a lot of problems in life. Watch it alone. And let it suck you in. Better next day guaranteed.
A Tree I don't think that because Shakespeare and Homer wrote about it, it can be cliche. Cliche in my mind is more about Popular Culture as opposed to human culture.
gawd this trailer is incredible. really getting at the heart of what makes life meaningful or conversely how life can lack meaning. Malick's films never lack in their philosophical and spiritual ambition.
This is one of those trailers where your heart goes in your throat. From 1.18 I was holding back the tears and I don't even know what the F is going on, other than Malick has a way of making films that are meditative, beautiful, inspiring and transcendental.
***** I wouldn't say that the style of cinematography we've seen in the past three Malick films has been Emmanuel's entirely, since other films he was the DoP for (Children of Men, Gravity, Birdman) didn't have a similar style at all. I'd just say that he's very adept at delivering the style of cinematography that Malick wants for his films.
The music from 1:36 til the end of the trailer is the most beautiful instrumental piece I’ve ever heard in my life! I hope they play that music over a compilation of my pics when I die 😇
One of cinema's greatest achievements. Malick and Lubezki are soulmates as filmmakers; they're two of the best. There's a reason talented actors want to work with them and always create memorable performances. For those who would criticize this film for its lack of narrative, wanting an experience where everything is laid out for them and all questions come with answers, I say you have much to learn about life and cinema. This is a masterpiece.
I love Terrence Malick, love Christian Bale. I want to see this so badly. the cinematography, the score, it just looks so good. I hope it gets a wide release sometime soon.
I think people want to see this movie, they're just weirded out by the fact that this trailer makes them feel uncomfortable yet deeply intrigued.. But they want to see it, despite how artsy and pretentious it might seem.
***** No, most people don't want to see it cause they saw his other work and went out even more confused than they went in. There is just no logic...cause its free interpretation from a to z. It could have millions of reasons. All his movies are 99% melodramatic shots of confused people.
+Juanita Jimenez "uncomfortable yet deeply intrgued" nope not in the slightest, just simply confused and not stupid enough to give money to see a film that cant even get its base idea across in a trailer
I think the recent Malick's works can be assumed as his autobiographical films. Tree of Life tells about his family, To The Wonder tells about his love dillema, Knight Of Cups may tell about his career dillema, and maybe the next untitled project tell about his love to music. That is why the recent works take less dialogue, more voiceover and just swirling around. It is a self reflection film. That makes the recent works of Malick differ than his previous film; and differ than other films. He wants to share us about his story, his mind, his dillemas, in a trilogy of his own movie. And if i have his cinematic eys and poetry visualization, I might make a movie of my life as Malick did
lol i no right. the trailer would be much better if it was 3 mins long with every main event showed, also i like lots of tits and explosions in trailers. If he could put vin diesel in a fast car that wud also make me go see the film
i have tried so hard but i never get Terrence Mallick movies.. find them too pretentious.. infact i would say i dont even understand even trailers of his films.. .
+ashish agrawal Does that include his early stuff? Because his style has really changed from how it started, from THE NEW WORLD til now. But his first 3 films are more traditional Malick and not as elliptical. But Malick basically treats the story/plot as poetry: you don't need all the details, just glimpses and some impressions. The same way Burroughs thought that recontextualizing prose by cutting it up and reconfiguring it created new perceptions, Malick feels that fragmenting the story with improvised abstract character motivations and edited images that reflect a subconscious meaning of the film's subject matter give the film a deeper, more emotive feeling that's closer to how HE probably sees the story. Now because it's such a heavy-handed and artificial process, it can feel pretentious (and in some cases, may actually BE so), but it's meant to convey the idea that substance doesn't have to feel tangible or definitive...sometimes a sense of a feeling is just as significant as exposition. But not everyone agrees.
I think camera movement can actually describe what is happening in real life. It's like eyes and ears, in real life sometimes you can't really hear what other people are talking or look at someone with focus.
jan piet Thought it was John Hurt, but he is not listed in the cast. After digging around and reading comments on here, the voice is of Ben Kingsley. He is listed as (voice) in IMBD.
visually I loved it. Malik has always had an eye for strong imagery. The story falls short though. There were some things that spoke to me but in the end I was just left a bit empty.
What a great movie! I considered it totally RELAXING. I enjoyed so much the incredible images Malick produced. He creates beautiful atmosphere. I loved both urban contests and natural ambients, like the desert. The way He directed the movie lengthens the time: so actually we see a lot about Rick/Christian Bale, and at the end of the movie We know him well. What can I say? thank you Malick for you art and special point of view.
The film itself is amazing. Definitely not for people expecting a normal, conventional movie. As a matter of fact, Knight of Cups isn't even a "movie" at all, it has no structure, but for what it is as an experimental film - It's a touching, complex, and ineffable work of art. Loved it.
I'v never known any movie with such crowd of such gorgeous faces all together, although with only glimpse of them for now. Natalie Portman, may fav Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, Freida Pinto, Cate Blanchett and more many more.
Tarkovsky (one of the greatest directors to ever live) said that films need to be personal and reflective of oneself and of one's life. And the fact that that Terrance Malick comes from a wealthy oil family might be why this film is what it is.
Just watched this film again for the first time in a few years. Man, I'd forgotten how good Brian Dennehy is in it. Not Malick's finest by any means, but still a damn sight better than 95% of everything else that came out that year.
***** no reason to cough. If you have the balls to say something you think is pretentious... *is* pretentious, then say it. lol. do you not like Terrence Malick? I mean a lot of people prefer his early work (rather than TOL/TTW). If Bale is a sell out to you for doing this movie; then you must think Fassbender, Pitt, Portman, Affleck (which is more of a rhetorical question BC he should stay in the directors chair), Jessica Chastain, Leo, and many more are all sell outs for being part of this group of films by Malick. What actors do you actually like? Or maybe you don't like the movies Lubezki has worked on? I'm excited, because it's very possible Lubezki will own every other person in the category and win his third Oscar in a row (not for this movie of course though, but his collab with Inñaritu). I can't be the only one who likes this kind of work as it's recognized as stellar in festival circuits and among viewers. I'm excited for the movie. I'm not sure why you are so *anti* it.... lol. But hey every board needs it's troll.
***** I just realized you probably already saw it at a screening and that's why you're so against the film. Since most people haven't seen it yet, and I mean, most regular people don't start bashing a film and its actors till after they see it. Which is why -- at this point -- I'm excited to see it.
***** sure, I'd love to hear how it turned out. Though from all I've read and heard it's not "spoiler" film. This isn't like a comic book movie -- or Transformers. Like late Malick films they normally have very paper thin plots and more about the depth of each character. Non-linear filmmakers (like David Lynch) don't have a spoiler, it's much more about the finding of meaning that Bale's character is looking for. Since this movie is preparing us for the next one (as To The Wonder did before this one) it'll be interesting to see how all the actors cross-over. Since they moved Fassbender's scenes to the next film. (Probably because he was going/is busy with promoting MacBeth and Steve Jobs which he's going to get an Oscar nom for).

I think people want to see this movie, they're just weirded out by the fact that this trailer makes them feel uncomfortable yet deeply intrigued.. But they want to see it, despite how artsy and pretentious it might seem.
+Juanita Jimenez Not rly, after seeing his other movies I rather stab my eyes out.
***** No, most people don't want to see it cause they saw his other work and went out even more confused than they went in. There is just no logic...cause its free interpretation from a to z. It could have millions of reasons. All his movies are 99% melodramatic shots of confused people.
+Juanita Jimenez Yeah, like eating poo
+Juanita Jimenez ...this movie is awful!
+Juanita Jimenez "uncomfortable yet deeply intrgued" nope not in the slightest, just simply confused and not stupid enough to give money to see a film that cant even get its base idea across in a trailer
I love this film. It feels so much like Malick is telling about his father and himself because it feels so true.
Bruce Wayne, if his parents were alive.
And if i have his cinematic eys and poetry visualization, I might make a movie of my life as Malick did
beautifully said, my friend
The Tree of Life 2.0
That's so true!!!
Battle Royale definitely
beautiful! predictable comment
3.0 Malick's previous film To the Wonder was 2.0
Cup of Life
I 'm glad to see that when finished editing, Terrence kept his leading man in this one.
Batman after The Dark Knight Rises
haahhahaha
they should hire annie hateway instead of natalie portman
" there's so much love inside us that never gets out " 🙌🥀
Some trailers tell you everything and some like this one make you go wait this is a movie right?
Pretty much what Terrence Malick is about.
what i'm supposed to feel?
lechnerjoe What DO you feel? :>
excited... ;)
I love this trailer starting at 01:15
I actually love this trailer. It's basically the editing, voice work, and most definitely the music that sells it.
+inceptional . If you liked that then give The Thin Red Line a watch (if you haven't).
"I can't remember the man I wanted to be."
*You wanted to be Batman, remember?*
😂😂
Was this movie filmed with a GoPro?
No it was filmed on 35mm film. Malick likes to use steadycam and move his camera on the z axis.
He also uses wide angle lenses on close ups so it gives you that go pro feel and distortion.
Abeisgreat1 in some parts, since to the wonder terry make that.
Song title? Sounds awesome.
Valar Morghulis No, you.
Jochem Weierink
Farfalla
skoVBA2 Finally!! Thank you kind sir.
Bruce Wayne
I added the TH-cam link for the instrumental in the comment section, hope you can find it ;)
Nisha Reading You're the best!! Thanks a bunch!
Another Terrence Malick movie, another beach flashback with narration. Well played Mr. Malick. >.>
I can't wait to see it. Great Cinematography by three times Oscar winner Mexican D.P. Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant.).
I'm still waiting for the 5hr cut of The Thin Red Line.
Wow, can they give even less information for the movie?
Well it's a terrence malick movie, all style no substance.
kworthington24 Nah, it's a trailer not a teaser. Teasers are about visual feel and teasing, trailers are made to sell the movie.
Well it's better than showing the whole movie in the trailer
Then you'll complain that they gave away too much. People can never be satisfied
lol i no right. the trailer would be much better if it was 3 mins long with every main event showed, also i like lots of tits and explosions in trailers. If he could put vin diesel in a fast car that wud also make me go see the film
i have tried so hard but i never get Terrence Mallick movies.. find them too pretentious.. infact i would say i dont even understand even trailers of his films.. .
+ashish agrawal Maybe you are not supposed to get them. Some movies are just there to be enjoyed ;)
+ashish agrawal i read the movie synopsis i was like "huh ?" so i came to look at the trailer ,and im still like "huh ?"
+ashish agrawal he is a dark prophet so contradictious with the sunny television or the sunny California
+ashish agrawal I don't think they are too pretentious, I think they are very subjective, it depends in every person....
I think camera movement can actually describe what is happening in real life. It's like eyes and ears, in real life sometimes you can't really hear what other people are talking or look at someone with focus.
And when the soul finds peace, there is no substitute the world can give.
Who'dan the old men talking in the trailer
jan piet Thought it was John Hurt, but he is not listed in the cast. After digging around and reading comments on here, the voice is of Ben Kingsley. He is listed as (voice) in IMBD.
The film that changed me...
Into what?
@@FLdancer00 into a chameleon
@@zeevon9907 The greatest of all reptiles.
About half way through this trailer, as soon as I realized that no plot was being featured, I just KNEW it was a Terrance Malick film :P
Ah, plots are overrated. ;)
It's about making a deeper emotional connection. It's an allegory based on the Knight of Cups Tarot card.
Kiko Joseph Sounds about right.
Watched it yesterday! Simply amazing!
This movie looks like it will be the emotional and physical roller-coaster of a lifetime. I will definitely see this. Looks like a solid film.
visually I loved it. Malik has always had an eye for strong imagery. The story falls short though. There were some things that spoke to me but in the end I was just left a bit empty.
Damn man Terrence Malick's movies always had beautiful cinematography
Now this, this is how you make a trailer.
No idea what it's about
What a great movie!
Loved it.
wow that cast tho, it's rare that i recognise more than 10 actors from the cast list.
1:43 Good to see Bane makes a cameo
Bruce Wayne has left Catwoman and he is ready for a new life
Can't wait to see this love how this looks and love Christian Bale!
Omg...two of my favorite actors in one movie (bale and Portman) it's a dream come true
This movie is about Bruce wayne when his not Batman
Bane at 1:42 "You have my permission to rave."
Yunseon Yang hahahaha ye
Exact Bruce Wayne lifestyle minus bats.
+Dominador Dayot Exactly same feeling as mine
The whole movie looks like a fever dream.
Mr. Nobody with wide angles
I have no idea what this movie is about but I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR IT!
+Himora Kenshin watch tree of life, if you don't die of boredom then maybe you'll like this movie...but it's gonna be the same shit.
I'v never known any movie with such crowd of such gorgeous faces all together, although with only glimpse of them for now.
Natalie Portman, may fav Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, Freida Pinto, Cate Blanchett and more many more.
Was Cate Blanchett keeping her Aussie accent? Good. We love her.
oh look, a rich white man on a journey of self discovery.
sounds good to me
sounds like a classic to me
Haters gonna hate
Tarkovsky (one of the greatest directors to ever live) said that films need to be personal and reflective of oneself and of one's life. And the fact that that Terrance Malick comes from a wealthy oil family might be why this film is what it is.
oh, look, a commie racist.
can't wait for the sequel, knight of cups rises
Just watched this film again for the first time in a few years. Man, I'd forgotten how good Brian Dennehy is in it. Not Malick's finest by any means, but still a damn sight better than 95% of everything else that came out that year.
One does not simply watch this trailer once and walk away.
I watch this trailer everyday.
It's just amazing.
I'm so ready for this,
***** ready for the great art that Emmanuel Lubezki makes.
***** omg lol
"Find your way from darkness to light"
It's agonizing not being able to find out what the trailer music is.
Jochem Weierink - Farfalla. It was made exclusively for this trailer and has never been publicly released.
Oh this looks like a load of pretentious dribble. I mean deeply profound dribble that is.
Do we expect any less from mr malick...
Jack Kash
No not really. Get the sick bucket out.
+P3RC3PT10N I was like 34% looking forward to watching this until i read your comment. Then i was like: ...shit, he's right.
VeritasorDeath
LOL - Comments like that are what made youtube comments worth reading!!
+P3RC3PT10N What does that even mean?
All I can think is LOOK ITS BATMAN
Austin Celestin *Pssst* Austin... Yes... You!
Come a little closer and let me whisper in your ear...!
Timezones exist
Bye
When you think you're smart ^
Mind blowing cinematography...
It's disappointing that most people point out that this movie is a "rich white guy problem" movie. What a way to judge (and presume) a film.
One of the best movie trailers ever made
Malick is a master at making me fall deep asleep with his movies.
Bonne Nuit
