- Wherever Francis Henry Newbery went, he brought colour, and this was truest of all in Bridport, a small market town on the south coast of England. Newbery was raised here, taught here, and eventually created and donated paintings of the town which can still be seen in Bridport's Town Hall today.
In this video, we explore Newbery's roots in Bridport, those for which he was immeasurably grateful, and ensured a long and successful career in the arts. His influence is still felt strongly in the town, which continues to be a hub for creativity and art to this day.
Earlier this month, we launched The Newbery Arts Prize, which was first held in 1875. Entries close on 15th November, and throughout the next six months, we will be bringing you fascinating insights into Henry Newbery's life and passion for art, as well as the history of The Prize and the places where he lived and worked.
