The people that live their are Americans and they wish to stay a part of the US. Land gets sold all the time and to foreigners too. Business is business and the credibility of it relies on agreements being honored. They sold it and that’s the end of that. History is history. What matters is today. Territorial claims based on history are nothing more than a political ploy to gain more power and influence. It’s a bullshit, straw man argument that has 0 credibility.

I'm from Russia, I can't say pretty much about what our goverment really thinks and wants. But in Russian schools we all learn the Russian history, and most of us of course knows that Alaska was the part of Russian Empire back in the 18 and 19 centuries. Most of us really feels kind of upset about the fact that back in time Russia has sold the Alaska to the United States.
Especially they was upset when after the purchase, the Americans found a bunch of gold there. But that’s not the point; not everyone is trying to go deeper and find the reasons for such a sale of land. The fact is that Russia sold Alaska after the Crimean War, the Russian economy at that time was... let's say, not going through the best of times. And in order to somehow bring money into the treasury, the Russian government decided to sell Alaska to America. At that time it was just a piece of ice and snow for Russia. Since the presence of gold and other minerals was not known then. And it was more profitable to sell these lands than to maintain them.
Why to the US instead of Britain? Like yeah, if you will look at the North America's map its really odd how Alaska there far away being the part of USA. By logic, it maybe need to be the part of Canada?? Actually, after the Crimean War Russia had not the best relationships with France and British Empire. (Because they literally helped Ottoman Empire in crimean war against the Russia) So yeah, that's probably why they sold it not to Britain or someone else, but instead to the United States. Probably also to make British angry, because its not really good if US will become bigger and continue expansion in North America, right? So, actually selling Alaska wasn't really HUGE progress in Russian economy. But at least they reduced costs and at least somehow increased the treasury.
In reality, most of Russians just jokes about getting back the Alaska. The other half is not against if Alaska will become again the part of Russia. No one REALLY wants to fight for Alaska over there. Most just won't be against if Alaska will become part of the Russia or something like that. But mostly, people here just joking about that. So if not our goverment, no one actually will try to attack or occupy Alaska😵💫 And as Russian, I hope all of the wars that happens right now will stop, and in future we will don't have some shit like that around the world! We are all on the same planet after all...

Let Russia try to invade. I dreamt of living in Alaska since I was a kid and seeing pictures. Being from Minnesota where our winters are long I know its very incomparable to living in Alaska but I love the winters, the scenery, like mountains, forest, Alaska reminds me similar of my homestate but greater. I can get used to the cold. I would travel to Alaska just to defend it if Russia invaded.

NOW take a look at the corruption of the Chinese and Russian government with its military recently on executions for fear of the military having to much power to fight the government. If Russia tries to take back Pan Alesska's territory, Russia's original Primorye was Korean territory. If you look at our historical map, the logic is that the Primorye territory should also be returned to Korea.

Russia sold Alaska as the territory was no longer profitable. The main source of wealth there was fur and they had a thriving fur trade for decades. However over harvesting had decimated the fur trade there and it was no longer profitable to manage and defend the territory against British Canada. Selling to the US was considered a better alternative than having Alaska fall under British control. US felt they overpaid for the territory but the later discovery of Gold changed that opinion.

I heard this is a response to backchannel talks between China and the US about US support for China to reclaim lost land in North Asia which was taken from China by Russia. Apparently in return the US and China would agree to have Taiwan and the South China Sea function ad a demilitarized zone. Japan also wants to be a part, so that they can reclaim Sahklon Island from Russia.

No. Not true. This legend of sale of Alaska not being legalised is being regularly repeated. I thought it was completely dismissed once and for all years ago, by a reliable and reputable government source, which addressed this issue and explained why Russia sold it. The image of the check in payment for this purchase was shown on internet for the whole world to see. Also, it was Russia that offered Alaska for sale to America, and America didn’t want to buy it at first. Finally, they agreed to pay the asking price, which was higher than what Alaska was considered to be worth in those days. I am born in Russia US citizen educated in both countries, fluent in both languages and know history pretty well. Russian source brought impressive evidence in support of said conclusion. Why does this subject keep coming back? I only can guess that it is done by certain elements, who are interested in a RF - US conflict.

The main reason that US wasn't interested at first was that Russia controlled only a very tiny part of Alaska. US needed to spend way more money to buy the locals' loyalty and fight off Canada.
