  • A brief look at Heads Up Display (HUD) technology for experimental aircraft. What is it - why do we need it - what is available now - how does it install in your aircraft. Watch as one builder describes the HUD that he built himself for his Zenith aircraft using a Raspberry Pi computer and off the shelf components. The links for his custom software are shown below:

    Great video I was training to get my private pilot certificate but had to due to family work, etc. Years later I have regretted that decision thinking a lot about it and I have never stopped keeping informed on the subject especially home built. I'm amazed and continue to be amazed at the advances in the aviation sector. With the advances in computer science together with hardware used or adapted for aviation it amazes the mind

    Thanks to both of you for this.........especially to mr. Marzulli for his programming skills...........my VCR is still flashing midnight and that might give you insight into my computer skills..

    Using one for 19 year. It is the way to go. I am building a RV8A and planning to install one on it.

      I have been very lucky with aviation, and now it is time for it to be paid forward.

    Very cool I suppose, but you can projectors for your cell phone to play movies on a wall. If you already have the app can't that be used to project the image on a curved piece of plexi glass?

    • @jfmarzulli
      @jfmarzulli 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.... and I tried.
      The optics are not correct, and the combiner needs to be curved correctly to focus at the "right distance".

    I purchased the Epic Eagle but the wireless performance was terrible. In fact too bad for me to even consider using it for flying. They replaced it with the Epic Eagle 2 which has an HDMI connection but now the problem is that the resolution is too low to actually be able to see the numbers in the airspeed and altitude. It was also very hard to focus when switching from looking at the image on the HUD and looking outside. This device is not safe to fly with.

      HUD's should be focused at infinity, such that you look 'through' it to the outside world.
      We do have a problem in the sims with ours, as the HUDs are correctly focused at infinity - but of course the 'view' outside is projected on a screen just a couple of feet from the windshield. So this causes the reverse problem of what you describe.
      When I first transitioned onto the 787, I thought the HUD was a cool bit of kit, and couldn't wait to play with it. Now, other than T/O, and landing, it just gets in the way - particularly when looking out for other traffic and weather. (Yes, of course we have Wx radar, but being able to see the Wx for real still helps in the decisions in avoiding, or not).
      For flying a great many 'busy' manoeuvres the HUD becomes so dynamic that it's just plain confusing - far better to head back to basics and perform the manoeuvre using the PFD - or basic 6 if that's what your aircraft has.

      @@phil_nicholls If you don't mind, can you tell me the distance between the pilot's eyepoint and the screen onto which the view is projected in your simulators?
      I'm considering the Epic Eagle 2 for a simulator, but feel concerned about the refocusing problem that you describe...

    The biggest problem I've had with a HUD is that I become too dependent on it. When it isn't operational, I find it much more difficult to fly using the instruments.

    • @jonathanguthrie9368
      @jonathanguthrie9368 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does your HUD become nonoperational? You should, of course, maintain proficiency with the other instruments, but the only time the HUD should be nonoperational is when you turn it off to maintain that proficiency.

      Jonathan Guthrie ; I fly a 757 for a major airline. Occasionally components of the HUD just break. And if it's 20 minuets until flight, no one is going to fix it. It can be anything from a simple switch that breaks to the whole system failing.

    • @jonathanguthrie9368

      That sounds, um, well, I'm not sure what that sounds like. Even well engineered devices built with care by skilled artisans and carefully maintained by skilled mechanics sometimes fail. However, the way you talk about it sounds like it happens a lot more than it should. I would hope that a failure of an important system would be something that you knew a guy who knew a guy that it once happened to, or if it once happened to you then you'd spend years telling the story about when it happened, and if it happened twice to you, you'd be forever known as the guy that this impossible thing happened twice to.
      I write firmware for a major computer manufacturer, and I've spent most of my career working on stuff that was at the "bet the company" or even "bet your life" level. Even though it's been many years since I worked on safety critical systems, I still approach things from the perspective that they must not fail. I was going to offer suggestions on how to improve the reliability of the system, assuming that the software is the trouble, but you're not the person I'd need to talk to.

      Sounds strange. Isn't the same true for moving map vs paper, ForeFlight vs navlog, glas vs sixpack, GPS vs radio nav and so on? Isn't the answer simply to keep current on all levels of skills? I would think an airline pilot knew that.

    So what happens if you have traffic coming at you but you have projected big yellow and red blobs on to your windscreen? You won't see it! The whole point of a hud is so that you can see the outside view AND the flight data at the same time. There is a reason why commercial huds show numbers and lines only. This system is compromising the outside view too much.

    Get cross eye from focusing from outside to inside!!!

    • @jfmarzulli

      This projector makes the image appear "ahead" of you, somewhere around the prop. The distance is far enough away that your eyes do not need to refocus.
      The Epic Optix projector is amazing and will work with my system.

    Arrrgh! Heads up is what you yell when the piano has broken loose from the outrigger. HUD means Head Up Display, as opposed to when you're flying head down.
    I've been fighting this battle for years. It's as pervasive as people saying "join the localizer" (one intercepts localizers and radials, one joins airways).
