  • Here is an update on where I'm at with studying for the CFP exam. I share thoughts on what the CFP program has been like so far during the accelerated path. My study strategy for the CFP exam is straight forward and I am hoping to pass the CFP exam quickly. I am using Kaplan CFP test prep material and I will keep updating on the CFP progress.

I’d imagine being a CFA charterholder will help with certain sections. I just finished the first section of the coursework through NYU Dalton and the first book (1 of 7) was a little over 800 pages. Makes me wonder if I’m spending more time than I need to reading and taking notes on all the details. I just started the Insurance Planning book and it’s about 350 pages. I’ve been doing 1 lesson/chapter per day and at this pace I’ll finish the coursework and capstone in about 4-5 months. Then I’m planning to take Brett Danko’s review course before sitting for the exam in July. My boss (a CFP holder) is optimistic about me taking it sooner, but considering I’m still in college I figure I’m better off taking my time to absorb all the info. Best of luck with the exam!

My exam prep program is 3 months (300-400 hours on avg time spent according to the program) of reading and questions, just to give you an idea of what the traditional route (usually) looks like.. They say the exam is "a mile wide and an inch deep".

Kaplan CFP program is 6 200-350 page books and 3 hours of lecture for each section. They give you 90 days for each.

would you say its still at 3/10 for difficulty now that you have completed it. Especially Estate planning and tax?

PLEASE tell me which Kaplan book you used! I'm looking for something just like it, aka a condensed review version of their regular 7-books series. Like you, I already have extensive knowledge in Finance, so I don't need or have time for 7 huge books. What you used is perfect. Can you please provide a link, or photo, or exact full title for it, and perhaps even let me know where you got it?

Sure, it was the capstone alternate review book. They give it to you when you register for the accelerated path.
