Toby Tricks and Maria Zanella: Alpine Fellowship Academic Prize Winners

Toby Tricks is an incoming first-year PhD student in philosophy at Stanford University. Before starting at Stanford, Toby did his undergraduate degree in philosophy, politics, and economics at St. John’s College, Oxford, followed by an MPhil in philosophy at the University of Warwick. Toby is currently particularly interested in post-Kantian European philosophy, especially Nietzsche, and also has interests in the philosophy of mind, epistemology and the philosophy of science.
Maria Zanella grew up in Rome, studied for her Philosophy BA in Switzerland, and took an MA in Philosophy and the Arts at the University of Warwick, where she is currently studying for a PhD in Philosophy, answering questions such as: What is sadness? Is it possible to really feel sad about fictional events and fictional characters, given that they don’t exist? and What do we mean when we say that a piece of music is sad?
