Television's Vintage Black & White TV Era: Dennis the Menace (Jay North 1991 interview: pt. 2 of 2)

- This video clip is part 2 of 2 of Dennis the Menace star Jay North and his appearance on Geraldo in 1991. Jay's story of his time on the Dennis the Menace show and on the set of the series is quite sad and troubling, but is a cautionary tale of child actors and the people who are their guardians during this time of the child's life.
In many ways, Jay North of Dennis the Menace was televisions' very first sole-child star of a hit series. While other shows featured multiple child actors in starring roles (Leave it to Beaver comes to mind), Jay North was the sole key star of a hit television series at age seven. There is a great deal of pressure that comes with that responsibility, and Mr. North describes that in clear detail in this video clip.
The show ran on CBS for four seasons, from September 1959 to September 1963 with Jay as lead actor. That was, as we now know, a tremendous amount of responsibility to place on a young child, and the results were very good in front of the camera, and very bad behind it.
Also interviewed in this clip via phone, is Dennis' friend Margaret, played by future doctor Jeannie Russell. She adds additional perspective as to what was happening on the set of Dennis the Menace.
This video clip is from a 1991 episode of Geraldo, who did a really fine job during this 1991 to 1994 period in bringing back child (and adult) television actors from that 1950s-1960s-1970s era to help audiences catch up with their lives at that time in the early 1990s.

Jay North was my cousin by marriage to Kathleen Burker Kuni. He did Butterfly R Free at Pheasant Run in West Chicago, Illinois. He rode my horse Patchess. Jay was the nicest guy ever. If he ever sees this? I know he'll remember Riding my horse Patchess.
Before playing Opie,Ron Howard was on Dennis The Menace as Dennis friend Stuart and has said that he knew something was wrong with Jay that he was going through something Terrible and that he really felt sorry for him,but at age five there was nothing he could do then,Ron was fortunate to have great parents who looked out for him.

Not really, he could be dead but I think he's doing pretty well, considering what he went through.
Since about 1993, he’s mostly made peace with the show but he’s still angry about it. He’s been married to the same woman since 1993.
1959 in North Hollywood, Calif., Jay North and His "Handler's" were living on our Street. I would wak our dog everyday pass his residence Not knowing he was. One day he came out and we met. I had no knowledge regarding his enviroment. But we became friends. My father, a Lawyer, made arragements for Jay to come to our house for Sanctuary. I taught him to be a young kid again.

His honesty about confronting it puts me at ease. Jay North is a good person. We're lucky.
How this woman got away with all this is beyond me.
Why didn't he just tell his mother what was going on? Or just tell a higher authority, that's what I don't understand, I know times were different back then but as a kid you have to tell someone, make them listen to you somehow.

His aunt and uncle should never abuse him, he was not their child. I was wondering if he had told his mother about it, this could have charge both his aunt and uncle. They could have gone to jail for abuse.
