It is unbelievable that this beautiful piece was played by a 19-year old youth! Simply a genius!!

For me, this performance is still the Gold Standard for this piece on You Tube.

What extraordinary intelligence, a great sense of timing, and attention to nuances. He just has a great feel for classical piano. This piece isn't a well known Chopin composition but he played it superbly, like a tone poem

+Fred MyOpinion No way polonaise fantaise was chopin's top work, and it is absolutely a well known chopin piece.

+Fred MyOpinion - It is very delicate and played as a ruminative dream. But is it what Chopin intended ? I am very doubtful about it. The tempo set by Chopin is Allegro maestoso. This involves more briskness and grandeur in my opinion than the sustained softness we get here (coda excepted of course).

rigel48...To me, it is a piece that speaks in a subtle and understated voice. Among the few times I've heard this piece performed live, it was the introspective approach that brought out the best of what this work has to offer--in my opinion. I heard Richard Goode play it that way and loved it.

one of my favs. Haochen the pianist is exceptional. I look forward to his work as he is constantly growing. He stumbles slightly here and there but that is part of his play. Plus this was 7 years ago. Horowitz showed that life span matters as his best work peaked in the 1930s. There is a good chance that Haochen has not peaked yet so I think his followers will closely appreciate his ability for Horowtiz like brilliance a la 1930's. Haochen does a lot of things very well. The work and decidation required to achieve this unbelievable. I look forward to hear him now in 2017.

An incredibly well performed Polonaise-Fantasie for our modern age.

"Shallow mannerisms" - no - just intense concentration. I have never seen evidence he gives any thought to his facial expressions. Nor do I believe they would be noticed if only he could keep his mouth closed. But since early childhood, he has always had trouble breathing through his nose especially during any exertion (at times, you can even hear it). I hope he seeks treatment as it can actually present a life-shortening health risk (e.g. sleep apnea).

i dont agree, this guy is a fantastic pianist but his polonaise fantaisie is excellent but quite similar to many others in my opinion...

yep. me too. however, just that litle bobble balanced against all of that perfection and musical interpretation, phrasing, etc. seems so minor. But, yes, it would be wonderful to be this good. The 2009 certainly didn't disappoint due to lack of talent.

I wish I could play well enough to get away with stuff like 1:24!

  • @PrestoTenebroso

@Daavid321 I'm talking about the unashamed "O-faces" he does at that time. I find mannerisms like that shallow, unnecessary and distracting, but if I were as good as he is, I could get away with it.
