The more you try the less successful you are. If you notice the birds are going away from you don't try to follow them. Stay where you are and wait. In most cases they will ignore you soon and even get close to you as they are curious. It helps to move slowly and calm. Also don't stare at them directly, watch them through the screen of your camera. For good photos: photograph on eye level. Especially when the bird are on the ground, it will get you a nice and blurry background. Don't fear a high ISO. I made many good pictures with ISO25600. The only thing that ruins the image in low light is low shutter speed.
