20:14 Stephens isn't actually jumping the run here, it is schemed up. In a post game interview he let slip that the Ravens noticed, that the 49er had shown only a single answer to a corner blitz like that all season. So he makes it extremely obvious that he is blitzing, but he stops halfway while he can still cover the part of the field Deebo is supposed to go while hot. Meanwhile Humphrey is the one actually disguising his blitz and he is the one getting a free release without Purdy noticing. So you've got a double corner blitz, with one corner acting as a decoy buying enough time for the other corner to get home. Obviously the actual outcome of the play worked even better for the Ravens, than they could have anticipated.

This loss isn’t as discomforting as some may think. The Harbaugh Niners happened to have their worst game in SB XLVII. We had one of our worst games at a time that we can learn from. Especially young Purdy. We need to learn two things:
    1. Don’t let this loss and fatigue spill over like it did during our 3 game losing streak
    2. We are our own biggest threat to losing
Let’s learn from this and get these last two wins. I believe no one can stop this team when we’re at our best

So much for staying unbeaten against the birds, but there’s good news and bad news after watching this game: they’re still on the path to the #1 seed, all they have to do is beat Washington and L.A.; problem is injuries continue to pile up, and if they were to make it to the SB and face the Ravens again, how do they avoid making it a forgeone conclusion? They were only down four points at the half even after four turnovers, and CMC did run the ball well against one of the league’s best defenses, but they really need a polished game plan if they hope to win, and have to learn to play from behind as well…

    • @WalterWhiteFootballSharing
      @WalterWhiteFootballSharing 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"learn to play from behind" - its the hardest thing to do, sling it when the whole world knows you want to pass. Defense and Run game makes avg QBs look like MVPs. When they can stunt, twist, abandon run fits, bad sh_ happens to good QBs.

  • @HughHo

Josh, another insightful and objective breakdown. I think your overall message is right - no need to panic, get folks healthy, learn from mistakes, and move on. Despite the score, I don't think the 49ers were crushed by the Ravens, just like I don't think the 49ers crushed the Cowboys earlier this season. There's a very thin (and unavoidably random) line between a turnover and no turnover for every team in every game. If you replayed this game 100 times, I think the 49ers would do well in a lot of them. One suggestion for future regular season games when the 49ers lose - I know the viewer count is understandably lower, and I think you could trim 30-50% of the video length by only showing one or two of the angles for the same play, especially if you don't have additional commentary for the other angles. It could save you some time, and could make some folks be more likely to watch a 20-25 min video vs a 48 min video. Thanks for all your work, week in and week out!

Thanks for the breakdown, as always! In the 1st interception, I think Deebo does not run his route well. He initially runs at an angle, instead of going straight down the field. So, when he turns, he is already almost at the middle, and that's why Brock appears to throw late.

The 49ers actually outplayed the Ravens, both in the air and on the ground. But as is often said, turnovers kill. In each of the 49ers loses this year, turnovers have been the deciding factor. Many people where too young to remember but when the 49ers beat the Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Championship game, the 49ers committed 6 turnovers!! The only reason they were able to win was because Dallas committed 4 of their own. when the ratio is 5-0....you lose.

You make a great point Todd, the 49ers had more passing yards and more rushing yards, and they also held Baltimore to low totals: only 102 yards on the ground for the Ravens (including that big 30 yard run by Lamar) and only 241 passing yards.
If the 49ers eliminate, say, two of their turnovers, it's a different game.

Great narative explaining a game that left me "dazed and confused". You really nailed this one. Only thing I'd add is, you confirmed my thoughts about missed tackles. For much of the season, we've seen many times where 4 or 5 players serially can't even slow down a run. And it's not just the 49ers, I've noticed sloppy missed tackles on most of the NFL games I've watched. Am I wrong? Or has this basic skill been neglected under the burden of learning so many defensive plays? You certainly can't tackle llke the great Ronnie Lott under todays rules, but I also see some great tackles by tripping or just knocking a player off balance. Would really be interested in what other fans think. Go Niners!

What should the 49ers have done differently on the opening kickoff? Ugh... not miss three tackles :(
On that first pick - there should have been a deep route to the right to pressure the safety, period. IMO, either uncharacteristically poor play design or blown route.
Bell just isn't cutting it, unfortunately.
Third pick... I fully agree, assuming Purdy saw the flags.
GREAT analysis - the best I've seen of this game. You do a great job, and I really appreciate that you highlighted key Raven details - and interesting thoughts about the kicking conditions, etc. I was at the game and it didn't strike me as being humid, but I wasn't on the field and nothing caught my attention humidity-wise.
There is a TON to learn from this film, and I'm sure the team is on it. I'm worried about the injuries too.

Took me long time to watch this recap and analysis. As always, it is very well done. My only comment is about Shanahan's decision not to go for it on 4th and 6. Did Shanahan want to lose slowly but with dignity? Seems he chose dignity. . Let me put it this way. If you are the short stack at a 5-player Texas Hold Em poker table, you have to take risks. Your chances as short stack are not great, but you have to take them. Consider another kind of game. Chess. If you are a chess grandmaster in a osing position against a strong opponent, if there is a risky move that might turn the tide, you take it. Three different games, but same idea. When behind, you have to take your shots even if they are risky. The greatest risk is not doing risky things. So at that point in the game that far down, the 9ers had choice to got for it even if it backfired and made them lose faster. I think that in some situations Shanahan prefers to lose with dignity, and I think that is something he should unlearn.

    • @JoshBreakdowns
