Something that isn't addressed in the video: The fact that the goblins are so monstrous, and their monstrosity goes largely unaddressed by most adventurers, who consider goblins to be nuisances unworthy of their time, speaks to the disregard that the society has for the plight of the peasantry. Goblin Slayer is the *one hero* who treats goblins as a true threat.
Even then its less that they are treated as a nuisance by adventurers and more that they are too dangerous to fight for the reward offered. Virtually every adventurer has at least one goblin slaying quest under their belt before they rise up in ranks past the point where they can ignore those quests for "better" ones. They are fully aware that goblins are dangerous for their threat rating as they are swarming monsters. "A" goblin is nothing to even the weakest adventurers. Cowgirl could probably take down a single goblin with a chunk of firewood in hand. Even a handful are no big deal. But you rarely ever only fight a handful and thats where things get deadly. Remember, these guys mostly arent heroes, they are earning a living. They want to do quests, get paid, and maybe get famous. They arent going to take quests that have a high chance of death, and a low chance of reward if they dont have to. They are mercenaries.
@@zain6008 I think it's a combination of the goblins low reward+people not regularly wiping out their strong holds or holdouts that make them the threat they are and people underestimating them
I guess you could also say that by having goblins reproduce by forcefully impregnating women, Goblin Slayer is comparing people who perform forced impregnation to the weakest, lowest, most disgusting form of monster.
@@kziila0244 yes, but we see Goblin Slayer kill goblin children at the very beginning of the storyline, and don't get to the Goblin Lord arc until much later.
Glad you addressed it, but would love it if you looked at other things in Goblin Slayer. The idea that he used a small sword within caves so it wouldn't be caught on the walls, the idea he masks himself with blood, and other prep things that he has worked out for the specific situation that he finds himself in.
or how he uses the Priestess Protection Spell to trap the Goblins inside their own Lair while setting it on fire. or even drawning a Boss by opening a portal Scroll to the bottom of the ocean and flooding the Boss room.
@@cdgonepotatoes4219 Yep, no drowining, that ogre was chopped apart by the tremedous water pressure coming out of the portal. Teleport magic has always been completely broken, that is why I removed from my RPG setting.
The strategic use of their situation and abilities is really freaking nice. I normally hate the "adventure party", but in Goblin Slayer, they feel like a professional no bullshit team. You actually feel their victories are warrented.
Fun fact: the creator of Goblin Slayer has on record stated that he based much of his character on Batman and the Punisher. Which is, you know, freaking cool!
He also puts a lot of mentions of his own tabletop experiences in the afterwords of his novels. It is up to volume 5 and 1 side story in English on Bookwalker.com and yenpress.
I find the people who get upset about the sexual torment in this are missing the point. That is literally the point, to show the horror of it. It is _intended_ to be upsetting.
I mean yeah, it’s the _bad guys_ It’s meant to show they are _monsters_ These people are too used to villains like Loki that they keep trying to relate to
"-this other guy, and NO ONE has mentioned him, not one has shed a single tear..." THANK YOU! I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who recalled his poor sorry fate. Remember kiddies, when you begin adventuring always be aware of where you are fighting and carry a backup weapon, one that can be used close quarters if things go bad. I prefer a backup dagger (its small, easy to place on, what is it 36 location on the human body, and doesn't weight much so still have your arming sword) and spiked gauntlets over plain ones...because (and maybe this is my GMs) I have yet to have a character NOT either get caught in confined spaces where he/she/it can draw a weapon or gets disarmed and a choice between punching to drive back attacker or trying to get out/retrieve my weapon. That poor bastard, that was not the way you want to learn those lessons.
Other thing about that guy is he was more like the standard anime protagonist. Just dive in without thought and it all works out in your favor anyway. Having what happened to him was like the "this isn't your standard story" moment. No "being saved by the power of friendship" here

Goblin Slayer sitting there watching this video like. "If this man acknowledges and know the horrible nature of goblins, why is he wasting time talking about them when he could use that time murdering them".
Fun Fact: I know that Shad is talking about the LOTR movies, but in the Silmarillion is stablished that orcs and goblins reproduce the same way than humans and elves, that means there were female orcs and goblins. When I first heard of Goblin Slayer it was purely for that opening scene where Priestess and her party get ambushed and annihilated, and I was right there with others thinking that it was horrible. Then I watched it... And realized just how little they showed and that the violence perpetrated by goblins, adventurers and Goblin Slayer himself, was so much more than the violation of the female body that was fleetingly shown. And as someone who has suffered abuse from men I really appreciate and enjoy the characters of Goblin Slayer's party because they're attempting to curb the violence towards others from goblins. I personally feel that that is part of the subtext that the author was going for but so many only look at things surface deep anymore. All in all Goblin Slayer is really a tragic, dark fantasy and the brutality is part of the tragedy.
Same here, as someone that got "fucked with" as a kid (I'll let your imagination take over) its almost empowering seeing Priestess get some sort of revenge. I remember seeing some retard say the reason they were raped was to motivate Goblin Slayer. They missed the point by a universe, its to empower Priestess, open her eyes to how fucked the world is, and get her set up to grow with a mentor that shares the same sentiment as her. These people can be so fuckin stupid uts insane
Especially when you realize that goblin slayer's entire motivation is being the sole survivor of a goblin raid and his trauma of watching his sister being a victim of the goblins fuels his rage that leads him to destroy them. His only purpose is to destroy the things that took everything he cared about away from him. It left him dead inside. He can never be normal again. He can never feel love or give love. He can never be happy. Cow girl loves him but he can't reciprocate that. Guild girl and priestess genuinely care and worry about him. Everyone else looks at him like some kind of freak. At least until the dwarf, elf and lizardman find him. Even swordmaiden wishes that he would stay by her side and love her. He cannot reciprocate her feelings. His mind and his heart are broken beyond repair. Yet he manages to show sympathy for those who share his trauma. Also priestess with the help of guild girl, cow girl, dwarf elf and lizardman does bring a bit of his humanity back. She is the one working the hardest to heal him mentally and emotionally. She tries to bring back his humanity. She has a bit of success with that.
@@Kos4EvrAnd this kind of speaks to the thing that Shad didn't quite seem to get. The guy who got eaten? What happened to him is horrific, yes. But his suffering eventually ended. The suffering from SA doesn't end with the SA itself. It kills souls while leaving the body and mind alive to suffer.
Hope you don't get this demonetized, because you covered this about as tasteful and decent as could possibly be done without entirely obscuring what you are even talking about.
Yepp still monetized, but regardless of if the algorithm flags it it might be manually flagged by someone. Hope whomever would review the video in such a scenario agrees this is done in a very decent way.
@Wolf to pick up text you need to cover frame by frame on the entire screen, on multiple fonts. While they did have some in place for visual images(is very complicated you can take a look how it is done) for text it might be harder, a lot harder since the letter are reused in most words, and is less often used.
You know this video brings up another issue with cultural differences. The way I saw it Goblin Slayer did the world a solid by retelling and giving a new take on the "monster." While it can be seen that the goblins are horrifying monsters that do violent and unforgivable things but even how this video describes it isn't actually evil. The fact is this is how the goblins reproduce. They aren't doing it because they are "evil." It's their natural biology to be predatory and reproduce using another species. As the video described the manga could have had it where a litter of goblins is forced into a human woman and the woman provides both a womb and a first meal for the infant goblins once they are born. The reason we would find this to be "evil" is because we're the humans. From our "perspective the Jedi are evil" so to speak. I'd like to bring to everyone's attention the parasitic wasp. They actually do inject their eggs into a living caterpillar's body and the eggs gestate inside of its body before being born and eat the caterpillar from the inside out. Is the wasp evil? No this is just how evolution decided would be the best method for this wasp to produce young that would survive. So that's what I got from Goblin Slayer. Our main characters are humans so they have a personal hatred for the goblins based on how predatory the goblins are of humans. (which btw is mostly because of these mating raids and most adventurers don't even take goblins seriously.) But goblins are just instinctively following their natural life cycle. It's more the Goblin Slayer himself who could be seen as evil given his reason for killing goblins is out of revenge and hatred. We see this even in the first episode with him justifying the brutal murder of baby goblins.
@@maxverner2341 I think the point you're trying to make is that there is no absolute evil, it's just a matter of perspective. I still do believe that Goblin Slayer is doing the right thing by killing the goblins because they cause trouble for the human species. Humans also need their own females for reproduction, so if another species is trying to take them, they're natural competitors with humans and could be endangered. This also brings up another moral/ethical issue, which is whether humans are just animals like all other living things on Earth or are something beyond. Is there more to a human than the flesh that eats, breathes, drinks, sleeps, and mates to survive? Or is it just that, humans are flesh and nothing more? People's beliefs regarding this differ from religion to religion and culture to culture. We often see in fantasy that a certain character is supposed to be the hero from a universal perspective but said character is usually not so much of a hero from other people's perspective.
To be fair to Tolkien, he specifically runs into the explanation of the formation of orcs: these are heavily corrupted, deformed, elves. When it comes to the other forms of "orcish" creatures, Tolkien only makes allusions in regards to Uruk Hai: they are half orc, half human. It's implied that it's done through interbreeding. So, yeah, he doesn't run into details, but he does state the horrifying aspects of orcs. Also, man eating, plus cannibalism. Not a fun life, that of the orcs.
I wish we saw how Easterlings lived so that we see how young women in rags who are shaven bald get put on wagons where they were offered to the Uruk hai as tribute for Sauron as you see after the mating rituals there were pushed into the mud pit where then new orcs are born
@@prestonbrower762 The film adaptation is different. Uruk-hai means orc folk, but was also used to describe the hardy breed of orcs that Sauron bred. Saruman bred orcs with men to create his black uruk-hai
Orcs were originally corrupted from elves by Melkor, darkness be his name. Orcs are goblins and vice versa. They can breed sexually because there are off screen female orcs. However, in the movies and the Shadow of Mordor series they were commonly bred asexually through magic in a pit/vat thingy. Like the one that the Uruk-hai come from in TTT. Dead orcs were usually thrown back in to have their bodies fuel the next batch.
Goblin Slayer has serious PTSD and likely has difficulty talking to and relating to other people because of it. The people around him are slowly getting him to open up more and relax from his hyper-vigilance but he's not there yet. He DOES want that connection if his actions helping other people out and talking to people who address him is anything to go by. But he has trouble initiating conversations and carrying on conversations beyond: "Goblins?" "Erk..." "Yes," "No," "I see," and "Is that so?"
Fate/Zero had a girl being raped by creepy Japanese bugs in the first episode. Yes, the kind of bugs they use for creepy "bug magic" like staying alive for 2000 years.
I'm glad you addressed this topic. Not many people are willing to talk about it in how it can be used in a story element. I always say, "The darkest place in this world, is the imagination."
Goblins Slayer is super practical about his equipment, knowing exactly what he needs to do and use..and being completely unafraid to drop or throw his weapon to grab a new one even if it was previously used by the goblin he JUST killed..he also uses a small round metal round shield strapped to his arm for defense but leaving his hand free to hold a torch, backup weapon or to shoot a bow with..and the edge of the shield is also polished and sharpened so it can be a weapon as well...you DON'T want to be backhanded by Goblin Slayer's left hand. He also carries 4 throwing knives at all times, two in front and two in back..he also carries a shepherd's sling in his large back pouch along with some ammunition for it and can sling with such force he can kill goblins with it...and he has NO magic other than when he can get his hands on VERY rare magical scrolls which nobody knows how to make anymore..so they are expensive as hell for him to get.
@ShinKyuubi " shepherd's sling in his large back pouch along with some ammunition for it and can sling with such force he can kill goblins with it..." I get the impression you're undervaluing the power of the sling, historically slings were harder to use and less used then the bow but in no way should they be underestimated, there are roman medical accounts of sling bullets penetrating the skin and being fixed in bone, or in a joint between the ends of two bones. Sometimes river pebbles were used, other times purpose made clay ammunition or even lead bullets. I even seen 1 source who said Inca slings could kill a horse.
@@franciscomoutinho1 It could easily be argued that, depending on time and area, the sling was actually *more* prevalent than the bow. Simply for it's relative ease of production and cheapness. There are very famous greek slingers, not to mention it's prevalent use in the middle east.. actually scratch that - it's prevalent use world wide! Many herders use slings to this day (in certain countries) to defend their herds.
Slings are less accurate than bows, and have shorter range, but getting hit with a rock as big as your fist is gonna break bones. Some specialised slings were designed like trebuchets, and could be used to throw a rock as big as your head. You get hit by one of those at any decent velocity and you’re gonna have a bad day. And as for the little pellets, they might not have much stopping power, but they’d hurt like hell. Probably only kill if you hit the head, though.
I feel the author did their job perfectly in the world building department. Imagine if this scene and information never came out? Would anyone want to read/watch about a guy murdering goblins? It'd be a lot of, "why is this psychopath torturing and murdering goblins for?" Instead, because of the barbarity of the goblins and their actions, by the end of 20 minutes when he finally shows up to work, we're hooked in all of the macabre ways he murders them for entire seasons. It's a powerful draw into something that could very easily have been obtuse and stupid from a classical stereotypical fantasy setting.
The thing about how Goblins in Goblin Slayer were made is really simple: Take the worse in humankind and apply them to the goblin. It's literally that in Goblin Slayer. • Stupidity: Goblins act in a stupid way unless directed otherwise. Their intelligence and chance of survival depends on the highest intelligent goblin in the group. This is similar to many instance on human's history. Group lead stupid people don't survive long. When an evil yet intelligent being appears, the worse of human appears (in example, Hitler and his officers and officials.) • Desires: Goblins act based on their leadership first, but their 2nd layer of decision is based on their desires and it's in a primal way. They want to eat, they do anything to eat, better equipment or just have sec, they steal, kills and kidnap especially to meet their desires. • Morals (lack of): Goblins are mostly creatures that lack any morals, but it's not due to a lack of understanding, but by pure evil choice. It's not like the case of a child who grew up with the wrong values, but actually that the goblin learn about morals and values, but only as tools to fulfill their desires. They will beg for their lives if cornered, but will attack as soon as a chance appears. (It's shown a lot more in the manga than the anime. The Goblin King's history is 3x more detailed in the manga than the anime. How he obtained his weapon and armors and how he gained his army is shown and explained. How he got defeated many times, but each time the decision of the one who defeated him allows him to reverse the situation and gain out of it. And even worse, the fact that he understand that he lost against Goblin Slayer's "army of heroes", but will restarts and do better next time.) In Goblin Slayer, the Goblins are exactly the kind of creatures that fits the Chaotic Evil mentality of the D&D genre. They are designed similarly to the typical (and unreal) trope of Vikings who burn villages, rapes woman and kills everyone on their path, but instead of having them move by sea, they move by the darkness and caves.
It's not really a trope, people did that back then and in some parts of the world still do, an example would be the Nanking massacre/rape that happened in world war 2, that's a very recent part of human history (less than a century) and shows the worst part of humans, it's like the people getting triggered by shitty goblins in anime forget that humans can and have done worse.
@@Daniel-wz3yv I agree. And because we living in the age of peace which violence is almost non-existent (if we gonna compare to the early ages of human kind), almost everyone forgot how human nature can be sometimes really dangerous and terrifying.
@Haku infinite One more thing to add to the goblin's intellect is that they hold on to grudges for life. A helpful thing to have for a race that isn't very bright. A not so helpful thing for the other races living with them.
@@Daniel-wz3yv yes it happened he specifically referenced the trope of vikings being essentially animal's which just isnt true. Did tbey rape and pillage? Yes but not always, not exclusively and they did plenty else
@@Daniel-wz3yv Its the trope that the vikings did JUST that. Vikings were not that different from the other civilizations at the time, the were nice at home and monsters outside home. Wonder how many people remember how the Darkspawn are made in Dragon Age Origins. Remember the creepy poem that Hespith speaks during the quest searching for Paragon Branka? "First day, they come and catch everyone. Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat. Third day, the men are all gnawed on again. Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate. Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin. Now she does feast, as she's become the beast. Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dreams."
i played origins for the first time a year ago after i've played Inquisition (go ahead judge me) and this moment was when i realized this game is so much more brutal than inquisition
@@Leivve Depends on what they did in the past, and what they plan on doing. If they are just eating bugs and banging eachother, and that's all they've ever done then no. They aren't evil.
The author of goblin slayer really does manage to make the goblins really properly evil. It's one thing to make monsters that just want to kill everyone, and it's another to come up with the following chapter. It's in the novel only, it's sort of a side story that's there for world building purposes. It doesn't have much of a long term significance and I doubt either the manga or the anime will show it since they both went past it with the story a long time ago. I don't think I'm spoiling anything for anyone, so here goes: ___________________________________________________________________________________________ "After a feast that had lasted three days and three nights, the goblins were most satisfied. The remains of their prey littered the floor of what had once been an opulent hall, now defiled with excrement and stench and corpses. Before, they had made only one scrawny catch, but now they had four fresh prey. Four women, no less. Humans, of course, but also an elf and a rhea. The goblins were naturally elated about this, and their celebration was altogether without restraint-as if goblins ever showed restraint. The girls were wildly outnumbered by the goblins, encircled, then completely surrounded by them… What happened next hardly bears repeating. But these were not run-of-the-mill country girls. The exposed bodies, clothes brutally torn away, were each different, but all showed the effects of long training. Their skin was sunbaked, with scars that spoke of old wounds, and each time they were played with, hardened muscles were visible through a layer of supple fat. And in the corner of the room, thrust aside like so much garbage, was a pile of stolen armor and helmets, swords, and shields. These women were adventurers of the eighth rank, Steel-or rather, had been. Now, not one of them was breathing. How did this happen? That was the last thought to go through the mind of the noble daughter who had been the party’s leader. Had they been so wrong to take on this adventure, gripped by righteous indignation upon hearing about a village girl’s kidnapping and wanting to set her free? It wasn’t precisely pride that had led to their destruction. They had snuck in at noon, hoping to catch the goblins as they slept. The mountain fortress had been built of ancient trees by the elves, and it was a place unknown to the adventurers, a maze through which they had no guide. So they never let down their guard. They prepared as well as they could in the small village, knowing full well many goblins awaited them. They simply knew they had to rescue the girl. These were not fresh-faced beginners; they had been on a number of adventures and had a good deal of training and skill. In front, their armored leader held her weapon at the ready, and a rhea ranger watched the area like a hawk. Guarding their rear, an elven wizard was prepared with her spells, and a human monk prayed for miracles. They had kept in formation, stayed alert, and checked every inch of ground. They had made no mistakes. The cold, hard truth was they’d simply had bad luck. First, the fortress-as was common in such structures-was full of booby traps. The traps the elves had once set to fend off goblins now, ironically, served to keep the goblins safe. The exhaustion of their Ranger from searching out the elaborate, sensitive, and deadly traps played a large role in what happened. They had reached the inner sanctum of the fortress, and at the very end, Ranger missed a warning device. “Everyone, form up!” As an alarm echoed wildly, the party jumped to their places at their leader’s command. Wizard stood in the center, with their leader, Knight, and Ranger and Monk at three points around her. It was no substitute for a good, solid wall between them and the enemy, but it was a strong formation. But the goblins that surrounded them were so, so many. Call it, if you will, the tyranny of the majority. Ranger’s archery skill was a divine gift, but even she couldn’t hold out when there were more enemies than she had arrows. Wizard used four of her arts, five-a great number-but eventually, her strength gave out. Monk kept up her prayers for miracles and protection until she could pray no more, and she had nothing left. Their leader fought on, her blade covered in blood, but as she tired, the goblins overpowered her, and then the hunt was over. All those bodies-yet the fight could not have lasted a full hour. And there among the heaps of arrow-pierced, sword-maimed, spell-burned corpses, a celebration began. “Hr…hrrr…” The elf’s voice was strained with fear. “St-stay back… Stay back…!” The rhea’s face was hopeless. Monk prayed soundlessly, and their leader was biting her lip hard enough to draw blood. The goblins licked their lips as they stared down at their prey, who were huddling together and hugging themselves. The party’s third and final piece of bad luck was that their enemies were goblins. Normally, goblin captives are either eaten or forced to become breeding vessels, and some are occasionally left alone, saved for a rainy day. But this time was different. These adventurers had killed many of their brothers, and no one was in the mood to give them an easy end. Goblins lived by the law of survival, willing to sacrifice as many of their number as it took to win. So they did not grieve the deaths of their comrades. But anger and hatred at those deaths ran deep. “GARUUURU.” “GAUA.” The goblins were delighted to find wine among the provisions they had taken from the women. Their drunken, small, mean minds invented one awful game after another to play with their prisoners. And the village was just down the mountain-an easy place to get more toys if they ran through what they had here. The poor captured village girl had hardly served ten goblins before she could bear no more. They had used her up long ago. There was no hope. Knight, her clothes torn, a goblin holding her down, gave a howling scream. “You bastards! You want to humiliate someone? Start with me!” She was the daughter of a noble household. She had become a knight-errant in the service of the Supreme God, responsible for administering law and justice. She had contemplated every evil fate that might befall her and was ready for them. But she was not prepared to sacrifice her friends. First, Ranger was used for target practice before her eyes. The leader begged the goblins for her companion’s life. Because Monk had attempted to bite off her own tongue when the goblins torturously killed her, they shoved her comrade’s entrails into her mouth. When Wizard was burned alive, Knight’s heart broke into a thousand pieces, and her soul failed her. It was only after three days and three nights that the goblins at last granted the leader’s wish. What happened to her during those three days until her body, so mangled it barely looked human, was thrown into the river is not fit to be written. The body of the adventurer that washed down to them, and the cackling laughter that echoed through the valley, left the villagers at the mountain’s foot racked with fear." __________________________________________________________________________________
Watching goblin slayer, my thoughts during fights after the exposition were “please murder, incinerate, and disintegrate every last one of these vile pricks before an ankle gets grabbed from under a curtain and then we’ve gotta deal with rape again”. Goblin Slayer is actually a light novel that got a manga adaptation and now an anime adaptation. The people who have lost their head over Goblin Slayer are the same people who watch Game of Thrones. There's more cutthroat going on in that show more sexual abuse going on in that show but they're not complaining about that.

Even tho we live in a very "safe" environment people need to realize that the "real" world is brutal with alot of death. We're just lucky to live in this time period haha
It is not even just the time. Go to africa - they have burned more witches there in the last 50 year then have been killed in the entire history of Europa.

There are still some few survivors about missing limbs. There has been similar things in the South East Asian islands where Islamic extremists have been attacking and destroying Buddhist monasteries and the like and destroying Buddhist relics while murdering the locals mostly with blades. I'm pretty sure the women and children aren't sent off painlessly as well. That's the problem we have with much of the Western world today. They've lived this privileged life where they haven't had to worry about massive hordes of people to sweep in and have their way with them before killing them or pressing them into slavery. It's a third world condition that's far removed from them. It's because of this that they've become removed from the plights of the rest of the world, while focusing on what most of the rest of the world would call trifling matters. I'm thankful that I got in and out of the military to see at least some small part of the world for how it really is. it really opens your eyes up to what's going on out there and how blessed and fortunate we are here.

The entire series revolves around a title character who has dedicated his life to wiping these things out in the most efficient way possible with no mercy whatsoever. In order to justify this without making Goblin Slayer himself look like a villain, they have to be vile creatures by nature and a real threat. That way, when he takes on quests with the express purpose of slaughtering them including the children, he looks dedicated rather than looking like a kill happy butcher.
Wouldn't it have been quite an interesting turn of events if the show started with only the perspective of the goblin slayer himself. None of his backstory, or development of how monsterous the goblins actually are. As the reader/viewer you follow this character who is overly obsessed with killing goblins and no one who knows him really understands why and views goblins as a weak monster not even worth their time. As the story continues you are left asking why this guy is hell bent on genocide. Killing these creatures babies not thinking to ask what threat they could pose as all the other characters in the show just view the goblin slayer as a nut case. Then the sword maiden arc begins and we start to see the more adaptive side of the goblins. We start to see the more monstrous side and even come to understand the horrific nature of the creatures. The nature the goblin slayer has seen all along.
@@danieltrumble2974 This kind of character doesn't really work as a viewpoint character. He doesn't speak much so we would need to be privy to his internal monologue to follow what is happening. We would be in his head. That would remove any mystery from the character. Otherwise, it's just him silently doing things. That's why the priestess character is there. She serves as the audience's viewpoint. She asks questions so he needs to explain things to her (really us) that he would otherwise have no reason to explain or talk about. Goblin Slayer has to be kept at a certain distance from the audience to keep him mysterious and inscrutable but someone need to bridge that gap so we can connect with him as a character. That's what the priestess is for. She serves the same purpose as John Watson or The Doctor's companions.
Ironically the modern goblin slayer can be a US army soldier fighting in the Middle East because terrorist killed his father on 9/11 Or a Muslim jihadist who’s parents where killed by a drone strike and written off as collateral damage.
crunch9876 I don’t think that’s really comparable. Goblins are inherently evil. There’s no “good” goblin, like there are good Muslims. There’s no potential for change. He even references why he kills the children, saying they grow up and become the next leader because they know how to adapt. They’re born with the instinct to kill and rape, it isn’t taught to them.
@ShaddowSabbathOn the contrary, the point of the show is to show us that goblins are believed to be the weakest, but that they can be the worst monster of them all. A perfect example of this, is how the first party dies horribly because they didn´t prepare for the occasion and thank that goblins where so weak that they didn´t need to do or prepare anything in order to win easily. All the deaths are do to the characters not knowing of goblins and their instints (the existance of the hobgoblin or the poison in their blade) or to the habitat of goblins and how to move there (the guy with the sword too long). The point of goblin slayer being able to easily kill all of them is due to his experience and knowledge of the goblins, do to basically become a silver rank adventurer on goblins alone. On the other hand, you have that any type of goblin are weaker that a dragon o a manticore, but some of them, such as champions or hobs could easily kill a human in a 1vs1 fight. So yes, they are the weakest in comparison to other monsters, but they are still strong enough to kill you easily. Also, yes you need an army in order to kill an army... a human can kill a normal goblin in a 1vs1 match, but killing 200 goblins by yourself is kinda of impossible, because you know, numbers made them strong. Also, take in account that it wasnt an army of normal goblins, it was a huge army of normal goblins with and elite of hobs and champions, that as we know, can kill you pretty easily. So, the show is consistent about its theme and avoids getting boring because they change the scenario (a cave, an ancient tower, a ship, etc, a literal battle, etc.), reduce the ways goblin slayer has to deal with them. (the elf make her promise that he can´t use some of the most efficient methods, so that makes him be creative) and change the goblins and its equipment (he start fight normal goblins without good armor or weapons, then he goes against different types of goblins, then the ogre, then the champions, etc.) To be fair I think the show is not as good as the manga, so try it... it is really good in my opinion...
The female mage is also killed in that scene, despite having a womb to impregnate, my guess is that even goblins recognize how much of a threat magic can be, and decided to kill her instead.
They poisoned her but the priestess ran off with her. If she hadn't (briefly) got away, maybe they would have given her an antidote to keep her around for a while. And when they did catch up with her, they didn't go straight for the kill then either.
@@tetsujin_144 The novel states that goblins always kill the magic caster, because they know they can replenish their magic within a day and as such are a threat, while a warrior type can be handled simply by removing their limbs.
It does work to build goblin slayer as a character as well. Since he witnessed the rape and murder of his sister, this was so devastating his singular purpose is to kill goblins and his whole personality tooled to that as well.
Absolutely approve of the idea of how Goblin Slayer uses weapons, with emphasis on the fact Goblin Slayer often changes weapon due to excessive blood amount on the blade makes it unusable. I honestly never thought of it and I wonder the veracity of it.
@@LtGrandeMontagna I'd never seen or thought of it before either, but it honestly makes sense. Killing is messy, and if the blood is spraying, it's getting everywhere. I also like how he never explains the reasoning, Ranger just sees him doing it and figures it out for herself.
I will contend that wasps are, indeed, evil. When I was in Boy Scouts, I witnessed the evil of wasps on several occasions. One time, before swimming, I put my shoes under a tree. Numerous people walked past this tree, and I was able to stand there and take off my shoes without a problem. However, when I tried to retrieve my shoes after swimming, a wasp swooped in and stung the back of my shoulder. When I twisted around reflexively, another wasp stung the back of my other shoulder. They stung me like this five times, attacking from behind, before I could retrieve my shoes, and chased me over 50 feet, barefoot, on rocky ground, all while ignoring a dozen or so other people nearby. Now I ask you, if wasps aren't evil, why did they ignore me when I stood under their tree, untying my shoes and removing them, but attack me instantly when I tried to retrieve my footwear? Why did they ignore all the other people passing through their "threat zone," and only attack me? Why did they chase me, when I was well away from their nest and many other people were closer, even standing under that very tree for its shade? I came back later that evening and burned them alive in their nest, because, as Shad said, killing evil is a good thing. We want to destroy evil.
romancing saga 2's termite monsters are exactly that. in my opinion, those parasitic insects whose larva eat their hosts alive are the most evil creation in all of nature
Hey Shad, coming from someone who watched the entire series. The main character does in fact, regularly repair his armor, greases both his sword and armor, and has two different sets of armor. So, I guess goblin blood does gunk his blade up weather or not he greases it or not.
@@KurNorock I agree, I guess it's one of the author's homebrew rules to make the "game" more challenging (the author makes a lot of references to tabletop games and lots)
This video really gave you more points of respect from me, keep thriving Shad. Realism in fantasy is a double-edged sword and people wanting things out of it because its uncomfortable, directly takes away from realism. The good and the bad are taken both in the hand.
Some people: "what makes these creatures evil?" Author: "well, I was afraid people wouldn't like it, but since you asked; they do bad stuff." Some people again: "why? this was completely unnecessary!" Author: *picachu face*
Author:"It's necessary because it's a dark fantasy and in this dark fantasy the goblins rape and kill." Western triggered people:"We don't like it!!" Author:"Well if you don't like it just don't watch it. It wasn't made for you." Western triggered people:"Reeeeeeeeeee!!!!!"
Nathan Gamble that is still kinda ridiculous that some people think a violent painful death where you are watching yourself get eaten isn’t just as bad as.... the other thing..... both are equally terrible end of story.
Thank you for covering this, Shad! I’m super glad some people understand the real value of including horrifying and morally sunken themes in fiction. It is valuable to observe and study evil within fiction, both as a lesson to those who don’t know of that evil and as a reminder of how evil can rise for those who are inured to it.
Just a WARLORD I don't know I have seen some pretty fucked up western comics and tv shows some based on Japanese video games like the Netflix castlevania show and the silent hill movie, to quote Ernie Hudson "I have seen shit that will turn you white"
100% agree, i thought the idea itself was great for the context of the show. The act itself was clearly sexualised which is disgusting but it really adds to setting. Kinda reminded me of the broodmothers from dragon age and i love that series
SuperJYLS Not claiming it had a deep plot, it’s likely the manga (and ergo the anime) is really just about forcing viewers to see RPGs in a harsher, more brutal light. It focuses heavily on prioritizing team interaction and tactics over epic battles. In fact, the epic battles seem almost like just a gimmick to please viewers who are there just for battle sequences.
I think you’ve touched upon something very interesting with the discussion between rape and being eaten alive, and the different reactions that each brings. I think the problem here is that when someone is eaten alive, it’s so over the top and grotesque that there’s a disconnect. You can’t easily imagine it happening outside of a fantasy story. Rape on the other hand, as you pointed out, is something that happens in the real world, so there’s more of a connection there, rather than being pure fantasy, it shows off a portion of reality that we’d rather ignore
I had exactly the same dispute a year ago with several north-americans on an anime-forum. I find it very disturbing and wrong that there's so much more outrage and censorship about sex/nudity/rape than about torture and killing (and especially mass-killing). Because the latter are obviously more anti-social and harmful types of behavior, as evidenced by the law and all human tradition. But they said exactly the same: "murders don't happen much around here, it's clearly bad, so nobody takes it seriously when seen on the screen, but rapes do happen, we know people who became victims of rape, so we are frustrated that it is shown or there are jokes about it, and that is why it is worse." Imho, this shows just how horribly twisted and hypocritic and self-centered is the mentality and thinking in the NA. I think Shad was right on the point here.
Beard-Cutter, Orcbolg, Goblin Slayer (however you want to call him) acts that way due to the PTSD of witnessing his older sister being used and killed by goblins as he was hidden under the floorboards of their home. He suffers from severe PTSD and and as the series progresses you seem his humanity slowly awaken while interacting with his new friends he slays goblins with. There's nothing hammed up in that setup. The Mangaka and the anime creators researched heavily into PTSD so they could portray him accurately enough to the affect they were going for. if you really wanna know something wild about the series, it makes hundreds of D&D and LOTR references through out the series, "What's in my Pocket?" is used both as GS' training and a means of psyching himself up when he's about to do something beyond insane.
@@ThatxOtherxDude Oh it's more than implied. If you read the light novel it's absolutely confirmed. For example the tragic results of Priestess' first adventure were all because of ONE failed roll. Goblin Slayer has somehow cheesed the game enough he can Take 10 on any roll or something, IIRC. He doesn't use dice rolls at all, unlike other characters.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the tactics the show presents and the practicality that GS represents (eg doesn’t clean armor b/c of scent, uses short sword b/c of tunnel fighting...)
Your added suggestion of the goblin babies committing "matriphagy" on their mother is something that is actually practiced with creatures like baby spiders. And yes, it's horrifying.
What a sad state of TH-cam where we have to dance around the topic. In dragon age orgins, the dark spawn did far worse. The women they captured were not only violated, but tortured & transformed into brood mothers, monsterous creatures which produce hundreds or thousands of other dark spawn.
They were also eaten afterwards in Goblin Slayer too. Where do you think all those bones came from? They wouldn't take male adventurers back inside with the captured women.
@@TeaBurn Actually, yes they do. Males are used as food as well. Females are too, obviously, but only after they reproduced enough numbers for the nest. *Urgh!* And the king still sees goblins as not worthy of his attention... 🤦♂️
The goblins needing human maidens to reproduce also gives them an actual reason to be a menace to human society rather than it just being because "they're evil" or "they're monsters".
Obviously in the GS universe some twisted Sorcerer or cruel god created the Goblins to be curse on humanity. Kind of similar to what the Ancient Sith did with Rahkghouls, except Rahkghouls just kill, they don't rape.

More accurately faith in people seeing reason and logic over their tunnel vision of social issues. Not saying those issues aren't valid or very much a problem, but in regards to a fantasy world, it's one of the few devices that can make the observer hate/fear them even more so than they already might because of the cliche over use of goblins.
I think a big thing that Goblin Slayer does for the genre is finally give a really good depiction of why more people don't become adventurers. That some people get lucky & beat the first few weak challenges & get stronger until they can go off on the grand epic quests, but a good amount don't even survive the basics, like the party in the first episode of Goblin Slayer. It gives a good reason for why people have other jobs in a fantasy world other than, we need mundane characters to make the players feel even more incredible.
It's a great way to write a villain. My favorite villains though are generally the complete monsters. Either the ones that wish to rule for their own benefit or who wish to cause as much death and destruction as possible.
@Samuel Dimmock anti-heroes and anti-villains can be fun, like Ash Williams for the former, and Dr. Doom for the latter. I would like more unambiguously good heroes though.
@Samuel Dimmock Hi Sam and Tony! Well it's just a "golden rule" that I personally vibe with, but yes, definitely not always applicable, as the "rules" you can find on fiction writing manual like the one I quoted are always meant to be challenged or broken. I am personally on the total opposite side of the barricade on this one though, as I am a HUGE fan of anti-heroes who make a bunch wrong choices and then eventually redeem themselves as well as "epic villains" who are not just pure evil but actually believe that they are changing the world or something. The always-lawful-good and therefore highly predictable Eragon-style hero is both boring and annoying to me, but I am aware I have pretty "dark" taste in fiction and ambiguous main characters are not always suitable for certain atmospheres or messages you want to convey 😉
@Samuel Dimmock Goblin Slayer is a good example of a more stoic hero. As far as your typical lawful good, Superman is probably my favorite. That or Spider-Man.

As a Dark Fantasy writer, nothing is more vital to creating a terrifying monster than to give you a reason to hate or fear the monster. Most fantasy writers might as well replace the term monster, with "not a human." because that is all their monsters amount too. If you go through a story and feel no strong emotions, the writer failed to accomplish anything of value.

The author of Goblin Slayer himself barely ever goes into actual detail about the rape done by goblins, often saying “Upon things which need not be recounted happened”. Given that the goblins are lustful creatures with procreational needs, it’s only natural that they do the things they do. It’s written in a very natural way, a way which elicits disgust by the reader, a way in which conveys the emotional and the physical impact it leaves upon the surviving victims. The author gives the topic the respect it is due, not taking the impact of it lightly. The anime and manga clearly take some artistic liberties which are easily avoided when writing, but harder to do so in animation and art while still conveying the absolute horror of the goblins.
Michael Romano Any child of any humanoid species that has a Goblin father will 100% of the time be a pure goblin. They must have some sort of parasitic genes.

Rewatching "Firefly", and the Reavers did this excellently. They established the horror of the threat long before actually showing the 'monster', and treated them with the utmost dread that it deserved. They presented the 'healing power' argument for them, how they were just men who went nuts and could be saved, only to counter with a flat dismissal of how they forgot to be human. Right away, a threat that was 'evil' for the sake of it. Even when their full story is shown, and you're permitted to feel pity for them, in-story they're still rightfully treated as unfortunately, but absolutely, monstrous.

Nono, you got it all wrong! Don't you know that men are disposable and easily replaced? You don't cry for a man dying horribly in a fight. Humanity has used men for the dangerous shit all the fucking time in history since once he has shot his seed his job for reproduction is basically done and the woman has to be safe and protected for an extended amount of time. All speaking now for the birth of one new human being I mean. Woman throughout the ages have been told as little girls that as soon as something is wrong to seek help and comfort from other to help and protect them. Men thoughtout the ages on the other hand have been told as little boys to toughen up, grow a pair, be a man, and not seek help. So it is not really surprising nobody gives a shit about the guy getting cannibalized semi-alive. We humans are still feeling a more visceral reaction to the loss, or potential loss, of a female of our species than a male. We have, in essence indoctrinated ourselves, and in the past that was a good thing. We wouldn't be here if back in the days we didn't have the "Women and Children come first" mentality. Back then if your village lost all it's women chances were pretty shitty for anybody to have kids or grand-kids. Nowadays it's safe to say that women being coddled is just a pointless, vestigial reflex we haven't shaken off yet. The human race as a whole has long moved past the need to protect their females. Sadly society clings to the notion like Rose clinged to her monopoly on that door. #ThereWasRoomForJack
Gotta love the priorities of offense. People die gruesomely just off screen in horrifying ways, visceral sound effects of their slow death, everything we can do without actually showing it happen. Meh, next? Suggestive content regarding forced sex off screen, not during screen time, no visceral audio. How unspeakably horrifying! Ban it! Shows how inoculated we are to violence and how, comparatively, tense we are about sex. Edit: Another thing to point out is how awesome it is to have a protagonist who can kill his enemies. I fell a lot of the problem in creating less heroic characters is that they don't feel justified. Goblin Slayer's ruthlessness would make him a horrible person if the goblins weren't framed as evil as they are. Getting to see actual darkness allows you to create a character that isn't one of those "I'm too good to murder this genocidal maniac because it would make me into him" heroes.
Amen to that. One of my favourite moments in the manga is where slayer compares himself to the very things he is hunting and finishes it off with saying in no uncertain terms "To them I am the Goblin" only for the moment to be hilariously undercut by the Quest giver girl then saying that if that was the case then by his logic he's indirectly comparing her to the very demon king who uses the goblins to slaughter people. it's those kinds of moment i find an absolute treat to read.

I watched Goblin Slayer a few months ago and while I found the "impregnation" scene awful I completely agree that it served its purpose in introducing the goblins as horrid creatures. The rest of the series builds up a relationship of sorts between the characters and knowing what we know about the goblins, when things start to go south you really start to worry for them. Well done Shad.
That's only really valid if you let people talk you into that theme "having a purpose". If that's the route you want to take, then lets have an honest look at that priestess later in the show. She's one of the fabled heroes that fought against great and powerful evil beings. She helped fight a cult and slay demons and destroy a powerful spell caster. Yet somehow, she is conveniently subdued by goblins and raped. And she also conveniently has the biggest breasts in the show. And she is conveniently unbothered by her rape enough that she explains it without solicitation to a MALE whom she knows for a grand total of like 5 minutes and is so damn seductive and ditsy in her behavior that she might as well be a brain dead succubus herself. But you're still going to buy the explanation that the rape theme was used for some deep creative purpose that had nothing to do with sexualization, perverse fan service, and an excuse to constantly have the female characters getting their clothes ripped to shreds. First up, I think you're not looking at the High Priestess in the right light. Mainly, I think her being raped had very little to do with the fact that she's attractive. Take a look at some of the more attractive characters in the story. Heavy Warrior and Shield Maiden are both what I'd consider conventionally attractive. The text has alluded to both Spearwielder and Witch being very good-looking. Within GS's party, Elf Archer has been alluded to being quite beautiful, and from what we've seen of GS's own face, he seems to be pretty damn decent-looking as well. We don't really have a way to measure the Dwarf and the Lizardman, because they're different species, but they also might be attractive for their races. Outside of that list, however, most GS characters don't really fit the idea of "classical beauty". Priestess falls under the banner of "cute", Cow Girl doesn't have the same sharp, almost sculpted features of a lot of the other attractive female characters, and the rest of the adventurer's guild doesn't stand out either. This shows one very distinct idea: the stronger a character is in GS, the more attractive they tend to be. Outside of the Hero's party (which appears to be imitating the typical fantasy protagonist's party), every strong adventurer we've been shown in the anime, manga, and light novels has been shown as distinctly attractive, whereas low rankers and civilians tend to fit either "cute" or nondescript. As the most powerful adventurer we've seen thus far outside of the Hero, High Priestess is the hottest because she's the strongest. This comes down to a very different interpretation of sexuality, and the role it plays in a character, that is largely a result of how cultures portray heroes. If you need more examples of this, some of the most powerful and influential gods in Danmachi are the goddesses of love who are so attractive they can basically hypnotize you with a look (Freya and Ishtar). Ottar (strongest adventurer) looks like he's been chiseled from marble, Aiz is repeatedly said to be very attractive, the entire upper echelon of Loki Familia is shown to be very good looking for their races and ages, and even when Bell, the main character who's first nickname is "Little Rookie", is doing something heroic, the artists draw him with a slightly sharper jawline and slightly more attractive features to emphasize the point. In a huge amount of media in general, one's power is often shown through looking good. Next up, the trauma part. While I do agree that Japan tends to take this kind of thing too lightly, you say it yourself: Japan as a whole does this. This is not something that is specifically wrong with the author, it is caused more by the culture rather that the author being shitty. In general, GS is pretty damn good for a light novel series in terms of trying to bring a bit more nuance to trauma in general, bringing it up not just from sexual assault, but from a variety of different sources through different characters. By overfocusing on the fact that it's brought up poorly, you're actively blinding yourself to the fact that frankly, this is actually a decent step in the right direction for Japan.
In japanese fantasy (namely manga, ln etc.), reproduction of humanoid monsters through rape of other humanoid females is actually very common, at least from my experience, so the author didn’t exactly reinvent the wheel here. On the other hand, this also means that this definitely wasn’t an inclusion only because "sex sells" but rather an inspiration of other works.
I mean, it probably is because "sex sells". The amount of goblin/orc/moster r*pe works is incredibly high, even in non-erotic works. The author just said "You want the sex? Here, have it. But I'll make sure you won't ever feel safe again after reading it."
The one thing that always annoys me is how the adventures always think the goblins are just a pest, these people grew up in villages, chances are they knew of a village that was raided and destroyed by goblins, they more then likely know a few people who were horribly killed and/or raped by the goblins.
Well yeah they do. But adventurers barely do goblin quest because of the low pay. Since goblins only attacks small villages that probably have not much funds for a high goblin reward. Also most adventurers come from villages and villages are very far away from town and barely any villages knows about the truth from goblins and all they know when they see 2-3 goblins in their village a bunch of men can kill one or chase them away hencing young adventurers from villages thinking goblins are the lows of low. Anyway medieval age education and information spreading was not really thing for every one only smart adventurers or higher ups like nobles and kings. Goblin raids do happen but a full village getting destroyed barely happens only like a household gets a bunch of women kidnapped or barns with stolen cattle or crops stolen. Also the raped women are taken to the temple and probably barely talks about it. Also irl most people are barely affected from stories like that. People usually just moves when the shit is happening so near from them.
Honestly, the fact that there's only one "Goblin Slayer" is the biggest contrivance in the show. People would care a whole hell of a lot less about Dragons and shit when Goblins are a common problem, and might kidnap your girlfriend/mother/sister/cousin/daughter. Unless I'm supposed to believe that all of the adventurers come from big cities where Goblins aren't a problem. Which would also be ridiculous.
Warhammer, both Fantasy and 40k, have an interesting explaination as to where Greenskins (Orcs and Goblins) come from. They shed spores whenever they burp, fart, poop, scratch themselves, bleed, et cetera, and this spores grow into mushrooms, then, if the circumstances are right (it's not too cold or too hot, and there's no direct external threats), these mushrooms grow into pods beneath the earth, in which the Greenskin grows, not unlike a womb. Once the Greenskin, be it Orc, Black Orc, Goblin, Snotling, or Squig, is fully grown (as in mature, Orcs just keep growing in life), they just burrow themselves out of the ground. As to why the Greenskins fight? They have a mentality of "The Big Guy is in charge", and pair that with a metabolism that makes them grow (mostly the Orcs, Black Orcs and Squigs) when they get excited. And if you're big and tough, what's the best way to get excited? Fighting. As such, the more an Orc fights, and the longer he survives, the bigger and stronger he gets. That is also why their leaders, the Warbosses, are often three-meters tall monsters that can often take on entire regiments of human soldiers themselves. Greenskins are also not picky about their diet, so they eat hunted animals, cattle, humans, dwarfs, elves, and even one another, although mostly the Snotlings and Squigs. Goblins don't grow, but instead get smarter the older they get. They do serve as the "Slave" class in Orc hordes, but make up for that by being utterly sneaky, treacherous and sadistic little bastards. Some of them clever enough to command Greenskin hordes themselves (See Warlord Skarsnik of the Crooked Moon tribe). Long story short, Warhammer Orcs and Goblins are fungus monsters that literally grow out of the ground.
WH40k Orks are basically bio-engineered weapons by the Old Ones to fight off the Nekrons and C'tan. They instilled in them a love of fighting (so they'd keep fighting the Nekrons) and made them hideously hard to wipe out, as well as self regulating when it came to contagion from outside sources (If something is seen as 'Unorky' it is shunned and purged from the group, which is why Chaos corruption of Orcs is incredibly rare). Not only that they have a genetic memory AND mild psychic field that warps reality itself. Ork technology works purely because every Ork 'thinks' it should work. There are cases where the Imperium has studied Ork guns and found they're missing things like firing pins but because every Ork knows what a Shoota is and that it shoots things, it works anyway way. So Red painted vehicles really do go faster for example. The funny thing is...these traits are also present in Warhammer Orcs, things like Goblin Doom Divers shouldn't technically work at all (the diver is usually waaay too small to actually carry a Goblin, not to mention launching them shouldn't even work) but Orcs know that this thing works, so it does. However they have competition in the Swarming Horde in Skaven who ALSO reproduce hideously quickly, couldn't give two warp stone chunks about the lower ranks (Skaven Slaves = Goblins) and have their own ridiculous tech. Personally in an all out war between the two, its a stalemate, with everyone else in the old Warhammer world losing.
@@luketfer The best analogy to the Greenskins' "Make Believe" magic, is the warpaint of the african tribes during colonial times. Warriors would be covered in paint made by the shaman, and are told that this paint is magical and would protect the from harm. The warriors would then charge into battle, believing that it works, and if they saw a comrade dying, then something was wrong with the magic of his paint, but still believe that his own was alright. I'm not making this up, british colonial troops reported that the natives believed as much, as they found out through interrogation of captured fighters. The Greenskins also use warpaint, but them believing in it actually makes it work. It won't make them invulnerable, but a stray hit from a sword or arrow would only leave a scratch, rather than a wound, or a blunt weapon might only leave a bruise, rather than to break bones, for example. This extends to their machines. They still need to build them in a way that they function somewhat properly, like making a giant sling for the Doom Divers, but their belief makes them work better than their construction might indicate. If they paint the counterweight of a trebuchet red, it would move faster, making rocks fly faster and hit harder. Or they would paint their bows yellow, to make them more accurate. It would still be a perfectly functional, if crude and primitive bow, but the yellow paint actually makes the arrows go where the Orc wants them. It's less "Believe and it becomes real" and more "Believe it and it works better". In 40k, a truck built by orks would actually work. It would guzzle gasoline like hell, and probably break down after a single mile, but Ork Belief makes it work as if it was a competently designed truck built in a proper workshop, rather than a flatbed with a crude engine bolted on. Same applies to all Ork technology. They *do* work, the Ork Belief just makes them do it properly and more reliably.
Some fantasy setting explains that you don't see goblin women because the males (particularly the strongest ones) keep them hidden for the sole purpose of breeding. They never leave the nest and whatever their needs will be provided by the males..
I'm not sure you know this and you're not very likely to read this, but just in case--Goblin Slayer was originally a novel series. Both the manga and anime are adaptations of it. This helps detach the intention of the original writer from those things you find inappropriate.
Hey shad, just wanted to say that Goblin Slayer is originally a Novel that was adapted to manga. Having read the novel I can say the original story didn't involve much bad scenes. In fact the anime may be more similar to the novel in that regard.
Another recent example where this kind of thing is thrown in your face is in Dragon Age: Origins, when you're about to enter a boss-fight. A heavily corrupted survivor repeats the following poem as you get near. First day, they come and catch everyone. Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dream Dragon Age: Origins is still one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs out there.
Just reading that poem made my mind conjure it up and I heard it. I remember standing there, listening to the dwarf repeat it over and over again because it was so well done and so creepy. @@cloud1306 I quite enjoyed Inquisition, I really don't know or understand why it gets all the hate it does. I think one of the reasons its so explicit in goblin slayer is that the writers want the viewers to hate the goblins as much as goblin slayer does and enjoy their outright slaughter.
Yeah that rape scene where the female fighter gets raped will make viewers root against the goblins that's why it's there. And liberals can't defend that because they like all people know rape is bas so by attempting to defend what the goblins did they would be seen as hypocrites. Yes I know the producers didn't go for that but it's a plus because liberals would see orcs , goblins and such akin to minority group.

You expect unicorns? (....Bad example but still metaphor holds). Jeebus, the..."impregnation" part has been around in fantasy, reality and fiction for so long. YES IT IS HORRIBLE WE KNOW! That's the PURPOSE of putting it into fiction at all... Urgh, some people can't handle reality.
The way I see it the reaction was only nearly as strong as it was because of the rating it was given at first, then amplified by an unhelpful and obnoxious group of edgy, socially inept shitlords calling the people disturbed and caught off-guard by it pussies and other nonsense only making people feel more annoyed and alienated spurring more controversy over it :/ Honestly I don't think it would have been made into a big deal otherwise, considering how accepting people have always been of things like 'Elfen Lied' and 'Another' just to name two things that horribly horribly victimize people/characters and that nobody's really even batted an eye at, y'know?
Lol, thats peanuts when compared to Higurashi and Gantz. Those two were fucking brutal and sometimes frankly super trashy, but god DAMN did they strike a impact of fear with some of their scenes. Also, School Days, never forget *School Days* .
Can we expect a part 2 about the weapons or tactics? Especially things like GS use scroll that connects to a sea or the use of clubs compared to swords Also let’s not forget the manga was also adapted from the light novel

I think the way goblin slayer handles this topic is very effective. It forces you to confront the horror, fills you with rage and bloodlust, and then satisfies that desire in the character of Goblin Slayer himself. When he first shows up, you HATE the goblins. You want to see them brutally crushed. He shows up with his glowing red eye and terminator- like attitude, and you instantly understand him, what he's here to do, and you can't help but back him up. You identify with him to the point that you wish it was you slaughtering these wretched things. It's incredibly effective story telling.

Something that isn't addressed in the video:
The fact that the goblins are so monstrous, and their monstrosity goes largely unaddressed by most adventurers, who consider goblins to be nuisances unworthy of their time, speaks to the disregard that the society has for the plight of the peasantry.

'Im Goblin Slayer, I slay Goblins'
- Goblin Slayer (not really)

@Wolf to pick up text you need to cover frame by frame on the entire screen, on multiple fonts. While they did have some in place for visual images(is very complicated you can take a look how it is done) for text it might be harder, a lot harder since the letter are reused in most words, and is less often used.
@Wolf it's more like it's better at speech, but that's pretty accurate
"The only good goblins are the ones who never come out of their stinking holes
" -Goblin Slayer
"The only good goblins a dead goblin NOW LETS MAKE THESE GOBLINS GOOOOD" -Goblin Slayer (abridged)
Wait, did goblin slayer just called that cush stinky? 😄
@@leviathan1082 LOL I can hear this.
@The Only True Witch-King uruk hai where bred to be smarter than the average orc. True though their not half orcs.
"He's bred orcs with goblin men. He's breeding an Army..." Gandalf, The Two Towers
“Goblin slayer has no personality” And I took that personally
That's serious bs... Goblin Slayer is a man broken and driven by vengeance and hate of goblins while being taken on a journey to regain his humanity
So does Doom Slayer and yet everyone loves him.

Covering weapons and tactics was the whole reason I wanted you to cover the series. This was really cool too though. Good on you.
@ShinKyuubi
" shepherd's sling in his large back pouch along with some ammunition for it and can sling with such force he can kill goblins with it..."
I get the impression you're undervaluing the power of the sling, historically slings were harder to use and less used then the bow but in no way should they be underestimated, there are roman medical accounts of sling bullets penetrating the skin and being fixed in bone, or in a joint between the ends of two bones.
@@MouseMask-p1z For starters, slings were praised for having longer range then the majority of bows. I don't have much confidence on your information.
The thing about how Goblins in Goblin Slayer were made is really simple:
Take the worse in humankind and apply them to the goblin.
When an evil yet intelligent being appears, the worse of human appears (in example, Hitler and his officers and officials.)
• Desires: Goblins act based on their leadership first, but their 2nd layer of decision is based on their desires and it's in a primal way.
And even worse, the fact that he understand that he lost against Goblin Slayer's "army of heroes", but will restarts and do better next time.)
In Goblin Slayer, the Goblins are exactly the kind of creatures that fits the Chaotic Evil mentality of the D&D genre.

Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. @@Leivve
Depends on what they did in the past, and what they plan on doing.
I don't think I'm spoiling anything for anyone, so here goes:
___________________________________________________________________________________________
"After a feast that had lasted three days and three nights, the goblins were most satisfied.
“Everyone, form up!”
As an alarm echoed wildly, the party jumped to their places at their leader’s command.
“GARUUURU.”
“GAUA.”
The goblins were delighted to find wine among the provisions they had taken from the women.
Start with me!”
She was the daughter of a noble household.
The body of the adventurer that washed down to them, and the cackling laughter that echoed through the valley, left the villagers at the mountain’s foot racked with fear."

Ironically the modern goblin slayer can be a US army soldier fighting in the Middle East because terrorist killed his father on 9/11
Or a Muslim jihadist who’s parents where killed by a drone strike and written off as collateral damage.
crunch9876 I don’t think that’s really comparable.
(the elf make her promise that he can´t use some of the most efficient methods, so that makes him be creative) and change the goblins and its equipment (he start fight normal goblins without good armor or weapons, then he goes against different types of goblins, then the ogre, then the champions, etc.)
To be fair I think the show is not as good as the manga, so try it... it is really good in my opinion...
The female mage is also killed in that scene, despite having a womb to impregnate, my guess is that even goblins recognize how much of a threat magic can be, and decided to kill her instead.
They know it can be a struggle to enslave someone who can shoot fireballs at you while tied up.
Or they are just bloodthirsty and kill first
They poisoned her but the priestess ran off with her.

@@LtGrandeMontagna I'd never seen or thought of it before either, but it honestly makes sense. Killing is messy, and if the blood is spraying, it's getting everywhere. I also like how he never explains the reasoning, Ranger just sees him doing it and figures it out for herself.
In a way Goblins are wasps. Wasps aren't evil (too humans) but tell that to the creatures that they lay their eggs inside and are digested alive.
In some enviroments, the "design" of wasps is that of populational control. Their purpose is killing. These things are evil man.

Hey Shad, coming from someone who watched the entire series. The main character does in fact, regularly repair his armor, greases both his sword and armor, and has two different sets of armor.
So, I guess goblin blood does gunk his blade up weather or not he greases it or not.

SuperJYLS
Not claiming it had a deep plot, it’s likely the manga (and ergo the anime) is really just about forcing viewers to see RPGs in a harsher, more brutal light.
But they said exactly the same: "murders don't happen much around here, it's clearly bad, so nobody takes it seriously when seen on the screen, but rapes do happen, we know people who became victims of rape, so we are frustrated that it is shown or there are jokes about it, and that is why it is worse."
Imho, this shows just how horribly twisted and hypocritic and self-centered is the mentality and thinking in the NA.
I think Shad was right on the point here.
We close our eyes to the things we prefer not to see, instead of facing them.
It's so hypocritical, yet so human.

@Adam J. Harper To be fair, the newest Star Wars are shallow pieces of crap.
Elven bread, Orcbolg which is also a blade that shines when goblins are nearby and the cave troll scene was recreated in the anime.

@@ThatxOtherxDude Oh it's more than implied. If you read the light novel it's absolutely confirmed. For example the tragic results of Priestess' first adventure were all because of ONE failed roll. nah, Just Goblin Slayer's kill count this year.
"The villain is the hero in his own story" golden rule of fiction writing. Great you pointed it out!👍
It's a great way to write a villain.
@Samuel Dimmock at least with Ash it's almost entirely down to Bruce Campbell's acting. Anyone else would be unlikable.

Most fantasy writers might as well replace the term monster, with "not a human." because that is all their monsters amount too.
If you go through a story and feel no strong emotions, the writer failed to accomplish anything of value.

You mean like the life expectancy during the middle ages being 32 years? Or in my opinion, people believing the earth was flat during the middle ages?
And even the adaptations in more visual media focus more on depicting on *the harm done to the victims* than the act itself.

I think Mother's Basement makes a good case for why that scene in particular is a bad one. Check out his video called "So, About Goblin Slayer..."

Please...

1. I don't care what mission it was; she becomes a powerful hero, traveling with powerful heroes. If it happened before or after that stage doesn't change that it doesn't fit.
2. Sorry to break it to you guys who watch too much anime but no woman gets violently raped and tries to sleep with the first knight in shining armor who comes along and kills a bunch of goblins. I know how Japan wants trauma to work because they put that ridiculousness all over the place and it's absurd. Her character is poorly written, unbelievable, and tactless. If the write REALLY wanted to draw in an audience then they would have handled the theme of rape with more respect and seriousness, not sexualized it and used some big titted horny priestess with "mental trauma". I'm pretty sure we got the f'ing message in the FIRST episode, with regards to how vile the goblins are.
My "violent" reaction? The show is stupid and the writer uses shock factor and sex as a story telling crutch from the very first episode in. I didn't have a "violent" reaction, I had a "this show and the writer suck" reaction. I didn't finish it and I don't care what it's target audience finds fascinating about it, if you take away the bs rape element there is nothing special about the show. You're free to disagree but don't bother trying to convince me the rape is necessary or that stupid priestess character is necessary OR believable, or that the writer has any respect for the topic as a genuine ingredient in story telling. It's beyond old how themes of rape can be used as blatantly poorly handled story telling tools, but if something like racism isn't handled JUST right, or if its men getting raped, or anything else that's not hot women getting fucked, suddenly it's a big deal. It's disgusting, disappointing and hypocritical.
@@Warrior_Culture "I don't care what mission she was on" well then your argument is invalid and your opinion no longer holds any shred of weight.
Besides, the anime makes it clear time and time again that goblins are underestimated all the time, people think they're weak and easy to kill then they end up getting killed themselves, so there's another counter argument to the argument you don't care about.
She also wasn't raped by a man, she was raped by a goblin, so why should she be affraid of Goblin Slayer? That makes no sense.
To me it just seems like you're an easily offended individual who was triggered by this show, and have made your stance on it, and no arguments will change you mind. As you stated, you don't care, so obviously I'm right.
@@Drago-957 she didn't have random civilians killed, it was the cultists that did that, she simply blamed it on the goblins so they'd hunt the goblins in the tunnels, so she wouldn't be sent out to hunt the cultists that are guarded by the goblins she fears.
@@Warrior_Culture Honestly, I feel like you aren't interpreting a few things in a way that makes sense with the context. I do agree somewhat that certain scenes in GS are a bit gratuitous, but I don't feel like your point about the writer not having any respect for the topic makes much sense.
But I'll make sure you won't ever feel safe again after reading it."
very true I've had a lot of people suggest anime to me that includes some very horrible stuff one of those anime is Devil man.
*GOBLIN SLAYING INTENSIFIES*
But what about giant frogs?
The one thing that always annoys me is how the adventures always think the goblins are just a pest, these people grew up in villages, chances are they knew of a village that was raided and destroyed by goblins, they more then likely know a few people who were horribly killed and/or raped by the goblins.
I know right. If I lived in that world, I would at least try to pick up a few gob quest just to people peace of mind.
@@yuukitenjouin5790 Every show has that one "hole", ya just gotta deal with it or pass.
@@justruinedyourday4864 Yeah, that's true.

The best analogy to the Greenskins' "Make Believe" magic, is the warpaint of the african tribes during colonial times.

Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dream
Dragon Age: Origins is still one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs out there.
It's a real shame how far that IP has fallen. Inq was such hot garbage, Origins set the bar too high.
