I have been trying to delete a app that I dowloaded from the app store that each time I tried I would get a pop-up window saying "Unable to delete because app is in use". I had no idea how or where it was being used so I finally turned to my lifeline for these sorts of things TH-cam and after looking at a few what I call "amateur basement tutorials" I finally found yours which was the easiest, clearest, most professional one of the lot. Needless to say, I was able to delete the pesky app. Thank you David. I'll be looking for your tutorials in the future. 👍🏽👍🏽

I am new to Mac and am a convert! I LOVE David's easily explained tutorials. However I have some issues with the conversion from MS to OS -X El Capitan. I paid for and downloaded Office 2016 for my OX el capitan and it screwed up my system. I can't print and spreadsheets don't work, apps constantly crash. I am afraid I don't know where "pages" and "numbers" went. Do I need to add them back from the App Store? App cleaner did remove the office programs. However I don't know what I am going to use to open my work related items that were created in Office. BTW ... Detect X is no longer free.
How long should it take to delete about a dozen apps using AppCleaner? I did everything you said and the spinning color wheel stayed on my screen for well over an hour. I couldn't cancel the action to delete so I did a force quick. I got never thinking I was doing something wrong. Can you do a video on how to properly delete locked files? I am having issues with my external hard drive, and I am trying to delete a backup. The backup is being deleted, except for one file. The boot.efc or something like that. What can I do???
Well, it worked I had one file that was hidden; so I clicked "show" and then it directed me to the Finder thing, I dragged the file to the trash can, and it was done btw, i used the 60 day trial, the only thing I had to do to use it was just to click try Im liking and subscribing

My question is if I no longer use an HP printer, but I still have it in case I want to use it for a scanner, do I delete all of the HP apps. They are all 32 bit and I have upgraded to Catalina. For some reason, it as disappear from my computer. I do not remember the name of that software. I have search in the dowload files, the apps files, can't find it...! I clicked the link for appcleaner and up popped a green arrow for MacKeeper. I didn't think I clicked it, but it downloaded a .dmg file. This happened twice before I got app cleaner to download. I have a screen shot of both MacKeeper.dmg files in my Trash. Then a screen came up to install MacKeeper. I clicked on the red X and did not install. I got detectx, searched for MacKeeper, and fortunately it was okay. It found Library/Application Support/DivX which it seemed unable to delete, though.

Windows leaves all kinds of stuff in the registry but as a long time user I know my way around it and there are only a couple of folders where some files are left behind i.e. hidden user folders and Program Files.

I keep my dock on the side rather than the bottom. Anyone else do this too? My reasoning is that monitors are wider than they are tall, so it's better to conserve horizontal space by moving the dock to the side leaving a bit more free space at the bottom of the screen to display a window. I know the dock can be set to "hide," but I prefer not to do that so I can always see all of the dock contents including the status of apps as open or closed.

It kind of sounds like the app can't find it's installer and thus the computer doesn't recognize the file extension. Just a guess, but you might delete the file and get a fresh download and try again.
I tried this and, surprise, surprise, it didn't work!! I want to use AVG Antivirus. But, when I tried to install it, it said that it could not install as it would create a clash with Mackeeper. I tried to remove Mackeeper with AppCleaner but it said that Mackeeper was a protected program and would not uninstall it! I do not want to have to pay a license fee for Mackeeper when there is so much good, free stuff out there. So, how do I uninstall Mackeeper?

hey david. what if I downloaded apps from app store but no "X" available? how to remove/delete the app?
