The original core game and Sator box is an insane amount of content already. I can’t justify backing Rebirth with the literal chest of game (bought one to use as storage for the ridiculous amount of minis and cards) taking up so much space on my shelves. That said, Rebirth sounds like a wonderful entry for new players!
I was all in but sold everything after a couple plays. It's the type of game you have to play often and with people with similar experience to enjoy it to its fullest. What I didn't really like was the prep phase where everyone is absorbed trying to understand the new spells they've just drawn and trying to figure out what will be their next round. This can be a grind. And while this would realistically take less time the more play you get, it would take several to have a good grasp of all the different magic schools and their deck. Add to that all the stretch goals, Sator box etc. and you have a game that requires too much of an investment in time to enjoy it to its full potential.
I didn't get it for this reason. From what I saw in reviews and play throughs, it looked like it was bordering on being a lifestyle game, like KDM or ASL.
Thanks for this comment... definitely help me decide if this game is worth it for me. Got in on the hype during the first 48hrs and as the campaign is coming to and end trying to do my thorough research whether to cancel or not... choosen to back out due to the nature of the required commitment and lifestyle game nature.
Currently with the Early Bird Pledge, but I think I’ll cancel it before the end of the campaign... I’m not seeing my group playing this, there’s a lot of rules and complications that will probably turn them off. I would like to try this, absolutely, but there’s so many games out there and a lot more are coming! It’s not a small amount of money, even for just the core game, so yep, think I’ll eventually pass. Thank you for the review, Alex! Lots of helpful information as always :)
Nice!! Yeah found a home dew player aid on BGG that saaaved our games and made them way more awesome- since the flow was right in front of every player
I've got Black Rose Wars but haven't played it. Had backed Rebirth day 1 to get the bonus but canceled just before this video since I've got enough for now.
did you find the original black rose wars balanced after multiple plays? specifically with reference to the relative power of the mages, spell schools, and quests.
This game is fairly easy to understand. The rulebook is not good at all due to the translations and typos. But overall the game is easy to learn and teach once you got clarity from the rulebook. I summarized everything into a note on my phone and I reference that instead of the rulebook most of the time.
I struggle with the Evocation Deck. The game is great, but there is no easy way to manage this deck. Some evocations are summoned only by rooms, some are only part of specific schools of magic, some are only from forgotten spells and I believe there a couple tied to certain mages. However this is a large deck of evocations with no good way to only filter the ones that are relevant to your active game set up.
Thanks for the video! :) Would you think rebirth is a decent entry point or would the original core box be better in your opinion regarding money spent. Rebirth would cost me roughly double the retail core box price and I find it kinda hard to decide how much gameplay impact certain stretch goals have when you do not have a lot of Games under your belt. Probably try to get one or two games of BRW going on TTS to get a better idea of that before the campaign ends :D
Ugh, we were on the fence currently have the 48 hr pledge but all the things you mentioned people not liking is what is turning me off. Still new to the hobby and prefer lighter games right now. Not sure if the complexity and deck building is up our alley. Guess the ultimate decision will be price, right now looking at over $200 with the current add-ons anything over $250 and probably not worth our effort, even $200 with your critiques has me jumping off the fence.
@Patrick White thanks I'm getting better with knowing if I'll like it, but as a content creator we are kinda in that do we or don't we due to hype and will people want to see it once it comes out. We didn't back a lot of recent hype KS because I couldn't see us liking it if the value, a lot thanks to what Alex, Quackalope and others create.
I liked the first game, but found it at least twice as overcomplicated as it should have been. It is basically a light game like Adrenaline or Wiz-War, with all the clunkiness and bloat of big KS releases. It follows the path of more is more in terms of basically everything. Rebirth was a huge opportunity to streamline the game, add clearer rules, maybe fit the gameplay and the graphics of the game (for me the lighthearted gameplay doesn't fit how the game looks). Because of this Rebirth is a skip for me, it makes all the exact mistakes the first game did. One thing I really like is the new tileset, but I really don't understand how the mages build the school while shooting exploding fireballs and throwing summoned demons through brick walls :D. While the flipping the destroying of the school to its head is a cool idea, thematically I don't see how should it work.
I backed day 1 since I was curious. But it seems over complicated and bloated, with the potential for lots of AP and chaos. It reminded me of WIZ-WAR, which i never got cos it seemed too chaotic at that time. But now, 5y in to the hobby, I have lots of good complicated + long games, which I can't get to play often. In fact, I want some lighter games as well... So I've decided to go for Wiz-War instead!

Thanks for the video, pledged never playing the original, can't wait to watch this.
Same

In your opinion, in regards to accessibility and playability, is there a noticeable difference between BRW & Rebirth?
I've got Black Rose Wars but haven't played it. Had backed Rebirth day 1 to get the bonus but canceled just before this video since I've got enough for now.
Yep, totally reasonable.
Thematically looks similar to Argent. How does it actually compares?
Haven't played argent sadly.
Who is their new Mandolorian?
Are the hexes Scythe, Eldervale or Eclipse size? I’m becoming a fan of big hex boards!
You should check out Tsukuyumi: Full Moon Down. It has the biggest hexes I've seen a board game use so far.

Which one do you think it has better game play ?

Thanks Alex for this video. Do you think that game is meant for 5 or 6 players? Because they just revealed an addon for that and I am scepticle...
I doubt it..I think it would take way too long.
Are the rules better than the first one? I know the first ones got a lot of comment/criticism.
19:04 - "IF ANY"!
You forgot: "...if any".
This game has A LOT of content already.
A looooooot.
:)
Thanks for the video! :)

Agreed on the thematic disconnect. And I need to play wiz war again.

This game was a one and done play for me. To long and horrible rulebook.
The rules are not great.
