Many of the towns have their cities inundated with tourists when the ships come in.
Towns like Ketchikan and Sitka only have 9000 people and when 4-6 ships come in they can have up to 15,000 people in one day, almost double their population.
They actually close down the main street in downtown Sitka so tourists don't cause accidents.
There's a balance between enough business and too many tourists and the CLIA and locals weren't seeing eye to eye.

What a FIND!!! You two are absolutely lovely and I immediately fell in love with your personalities. I leave for my 2nd big trip on my bucket list in 10 days to do the Seward to Vancouver 7 day on Norwegian Spirit with a group of lifelong friends that made this happen within months of my mention that it was my dream after my diagnosis of MS and progressive white matter disease in 2021. I am overjoyed to say the least. After raising 4 children (35 to 21) and 1 granddaughter (14) this Mom and GiGi has he struck out on my journey to see God's magnificence and to experience the wonder I can fit into my schedule and budget. I can't wait to see the splendor in person!! Your preview has fed my excitement. I wish you both safe travels and blessings in your everyday. P.S. the locals did pull at my heart strings...maybe the cruise industries could evaluate their influence and impact on the communities and their people. Marv, you responded with such kindness and gentleness, thank you!!! Chivalry is not a lost art!!!

Go to the Mendenhall Glacier after 8 when the buses are gone and locals come out for walks and to look for bears. Go to shops and restaurants that aren’t on S Franklin Street.
