Judith Durham had a beautiful and a powerfully distinctive voice. She was a versatile and energetic performer who could sing folk, jazz, spirituals and soul. Her recording of ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Morning has broken,’ are real gems to be treasured. In my humble opinion, she was the best popular female singer of the 1960’s and 70’s. Judith was always pitch perfect and her voice was a clear as a bell. Her death has robbed the world of an angelic voice. However, heaven has gained a wonderful ‘songbird.’
Best Danny Boy I have ever heard. What a gift, and she always was so humble. Still is. Rediscovering her and The Seekers has been so enjoyable. She is one of the best ever.
I don't think we ever got to see this entire special in America, although I have seen portions of it throughout the years. I was only 12 when I first noticed (and fell in love with Judith) and the Seekers in 1967-68. I never knew she performed solo or played the piano back then. My Mother first introduced me to the tune 'Danny Boy' and to an old movie starring Deanna Durban singing it, which was wonderful. Then both of of us heard Judith's lovely version of this song and agreed she was magnificent with her beautiful crystal clear clarity. This is fantastic to watch 50 years later, sadly though without my Mom (RIP). in my 60's I appreciate Judith Durham so much more than before when I was young.
Despite this joyous jaunt as a solo artist, her voice was a quintessential augmentation of the voices of the three male members of the Seekers. That unique blend was the absolute gold standard that needed to have aspiring songs by song writers from all over being submitted to them for performance and recording.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is everything a singer and pianist is supposed to sound like. Y'all may know that Keely Smith is my favorite, but Miss Judith- so glad she never changed it to Judy on stage- is pure talent, class and wholesomeness. That being said, all of us have to battle the sin of pride at times,no matter our station in life. This show is just marvelous and is fittingly in her hometown. Give that 1968 a break. As a whole, they were taught to show people respect with a quiet intensity. On "Georgy Girl" they applauded as the song began,as we often do now. I pray for Judith's family and friends since her passing. I shed a few tears myself while typing this comment. Rest in Peace Judith and Keely and God bless you. Hey, I forgot to write the word "audience" after "1968" on line five. Take care and Roll Tide! Richard Rhoden from Alabama
Agreed...and I have heard dozens of versions beginning with Jim Reeves when I was merely hours old still in the hospital. This is the best version ever...and it was LIVE!
A rare and superlative memento. She performs several songs on this show I never heard her sing before. Also, hers is the only version of "Danny Boy" I've ever really loved --- no one does it like she can.
Yes and No Shevill Mathers. Undeniable huge musical talent which is very much an inherited gift.... But the piano playing at that level would need to be cultivated as well. Especially in the Classical tradition... Which can be ,. I was going to say brutal training, certainly very demanding albeit rewarding. Thus speaks a Classically trained music teacher of fifty years.
Cannot put into words anything that could even come close to describing how I feel about this beautiful, talented lady. Nothing would do justice. She has been called a "Dolly lady." I think that she is a Dolly Angel!
"Earth Angel....Earth Angel"..... Thank you Denny! I never saw a performance in OZ with Judith solo. Brings the time of youth back. Judy/Judith is so very very special. She is what I should have looked for 50 years ago. However no one can take her place!
"Oh Wow", till recently I never realized how fantastic a talented person Miss Judith Durham was, and still is? I remembered her from The Seekers, of the Sixties of course. But prior too then I was a naive adolescent. Later In my teen years I became infatuated with many other female singers, like Petula Clark, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nick's, Ann Murray, Crystal Gayle, Olivia Newton John, Patsy Cline, and many others. I admit here I'm a sop when it comes to music! Now a days I seem to be reminiscing more as I'm older. But the thing that seems to be reacurring is how life and music have coincided with one another? Anyways Thank you so much for that insite too the past, and wonderful repeat performance, of a fantasticlly talented individual. Wyoming, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🌈🌈❤️❤️😍😍👌👌🙏🙏
As the announcer indicates at the end, this was a live to air presentation. It is my guess that the ''audience'' was used as stage dressing and most likely played a part in the rehearsal....for cues and reaction.
This audience is obviously dead. I would've been going out of my mind. This beautiful lady with such an Angelic voice is indeed a true original one of a kind. I loved her from the very first time my ears & heart were possessed by her voice. A true beautiful, incredibly God gifted talent. Judith Durham I shall forever love you!❤
She would have known what was going on, since she was from Melbourne and it was a Melbourne audience. Probably told by the producers not to applaud until the end of each song. But I can't begin to tell you how dull Melbourne was in 1968.
This 25 min show is wonderful. Just that. The music is alternately happy, sad, vibrating, slow.... Judith sings high notes, mezzo notes, plays the piano... and is beautiful to see all around. Amazing.
i doubt if anybody has sung a more beautiful, sincere version of 'danny boy' than judith! i class it alongside frank sinatra's version of , ole many river', which made martin luther king, who was in the audience, cry!!
Her most ever beautiful and vivacious self. Her husband had shown her how to adopt a prudent vegetarian life style that translated to such bounding energy and creative drive.
I've been in love with her since 1965, but being in the USA, I never had the opportunity to see her in person. I'm very envious of you for having seen her many times.
Why didn't we see her here in the States? Or, why was I stupid enough to have missed her and the group's performances if they came here? Compared to many of our so called talents she stood well above them across the board. Thanks for the videos. Worth the price of admission in any world at any time.
Well we're all entitled to our opinion about the orchestra. But don't forget, the Seekers worked with orchestras a lot on those British TV variety shows, and what a racket some of them made.
One thing I have read once was she made most of her own outer clothes. She did a 2-year degree in Classical piano with some serious voice training on top of the hard work at the piano. It shows in every syllable she ever sang. They did make it to the US. 1965 - In June the Seekers performed in the United States on The Ed Sullivan Show singing "A World of Our Own" and "You Can Tell The World".
Perfection.. right here. Sorry ladies but you'll never live up to Judith's standards. I can't fault the girl. She is the kind of treasure that you dream of as a lonely despondent school boy crying yourself to sleep at night! Just too beautiful it hurts. Such a wonderful girl.
She admitted in a latter interview that she was nervous doing a show by herself. You can notice the quiver when she says "no place like home". A very impressively talented lady.
@@howie9751 I so agree, I know she always liked this kind of horrible stuff, and I'm glad she got the chance to do it. But she's at her best with the Seekers, and they can't manage without her.
yes, at the bigining piano was serious and singing was a hobby, then, after piano became a hobby , like our beloved Kathleen Ferrier did, a few years ago...a typical tradition among british, which makes us so close.
I have always thought that Judith had the voice of an angel; however, I have also felt that her voice was best showcased when it was contrasted against the male voices of THE SEEKERS. For me, that was the magical combination.
I just would like to know who are the 18 idiots who gave a thumbs down to this Angelic voice. Judith Durham I love you forever, & forever is a long, long time. Love you Judith. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Still watching this amazing show and still cannot understand how the audience could be like mannequins just sitting there whilst a nervous Judith is gingerly hoping she will be accepted away from The Seekers I would kill to be in that audience. The woman with the big hair in the back row (right side) looks bored to death :( see 23:20 as Judith belts out Georgy Girl why ever go if you are not going to enjoy it? Fabulous Judith just awesome and boy that tiny waist :o
This would have been THE ticket in Melbourne. I reckon there's been a fortune spent on ladies' hairdressing, and dresses. And all those dinner suits! This was just the way it was in a formal setting in 1968 Melbourne. We were all very conservative then. By the way looking bored was an acquired skill amongst some who didn't want to show what they really felt.
Didn’t the audiences in Australia ever show an interest in what was on stage in front of them. Most look like they should be in a mausoleum rather than at a variety performance where the star act is an Australian icon.
A Jamieson Playback: reality based & loving..."1968 Channel 9 Special": Judith was never a "tramp led" rose. She's a product of "MGM & wedded bliss". She studied hard. Got the nod with "I'll Never Find Another You" & "Georgy Girl". With loving eyes & heart, Veritas, Peter (Jamieson)
If that is a typical Australian audience I wouldn't like to be at an Australian Wake. She is a magnificent singer and deserves much more appreciation than this. Maybe they were at a different performance and photo shop'd into this, they just don't seem real somehow.
Fantastic voice and a serious singer. But nightclub singers, even Variety show singers, are plentiful. Maybe it's the songs, maybe it's visual, but the magic seems to happen only with The Seekers. Just one of those perfect combination of voices.
Let's get a million views for this special lady

Lovely lady with a totally unique voice.
And here we are in August 2022. With the world a poorer place
Thank you, Georgie Girl. We will love you forever.
And ever....
Judith was an incredibly gifted talented lady! Her energentic positive music is what the world needs more of...
She is brilliant even today
Best Danny Boy I have ever heard. What a gift, and she always was so humble. Still is. Rediscovering her and The Seekers has been so enjoyable. She is one of the best ever.
I never know that Judith was very well known in piano piece, behind her beauty & voice. So great nd brilliant..

This is my favorite solo show of Judith!! What a world treasure!
Never have I heard "Danny Boy" sung so beautifully.

Voice, talent, charisma...she has everything.
A rare and superlative memento. She performs several songs on this show I never heard her sing before. Also, hers is the only version of "Danny Boy" I've ever really loved --- no one does it like she can.
Judith is amazing, lovely and adorable.
To this day she is still a huge talent and very lovely person.

Her version of the Lords Prayer is a masterpiece. Even our Lord had to love it!

Oh Judith unbelievable two years had past since youv'e been gone. You are so missed beautiful lady.♥♥♥🌹🌹🌹😭😭😭
Lovely lady and a great voice! Even today! xx
Rest in Heaven Judith Durham
😭💔♥️
My goodness how could anybody in an audience with this amazing lady sit there so poker faced??? Judith Durham is awesome... xxxxxxxxx
They are uncomfortable in their tuxedos and furs, probably wishing they had had a few more martinis before they left home.
They've probably been told by the producer, you're on television so behave yourself . . .

She is the heart and soul of music.
Wonderful Judith: None equal. Thanks.

Her most ever beautiful and vivacious self.

Great orchestra backing her. Must have been quite a transition after singing with the 3 boys only. Looking gorgeous, and sounding incredible.
Well we're all entitled to our opinion about the orchestra. But don't forget, the Seekers worked with orchestras a lot on those British TV variety shows, and what a racket some of them made.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful
She is an angel, wonderful
all perfect singer
That voice...
what a remarkable talent
It takes nerve to perform in front of a cold, unresponsive audience. She is 100% in the music. What a performer . . .
U saw it, I didn't
I agree
James--"cold, unresponsive audience?" How's that? What do want them to do, jump up and down and do cartwheels?
been a while since viewing last she may have been at her vocal peak so strong
Definitivamente una Chica muy talentosa
Note how she demonstrates her perfect pitch at the beginning of Georgy Girl.

I thought the same thing about the audience. A bunch of stiffs.
Richard Alan Savage It was 1968! Those days you didn't have crowd surfing or relieving yourself on stage, dummy! She's a wonderful talent.
A very shy lady in the 60s. She admits that publicly. But what an all round accomplished singer & pianist.
Just special
Good solo, but awesome with the Seekers..
The 16 dislikes [as of 31-5-2019] must have been in the audience in 1968 .
