The Thunder Creek series of flies was created by fisherman and commercial tyer Keith Fulsher of Eastchester, NY. The fly was developed because he felt the standard minnow tying method of a large thread head with painted eyes didn't properly represent the naturals. Keith's reverse tied bucktails added detail and allowed for a variety of patterns to be tied with the method. (books listed below). This pattern, the blueback trout, comes from the expanded book done in collaboration with David Klausmeyer and includes additional patterns for fresh and saltwater.
For hooks, the Partridge CS5 and the Gaelic Supreme Thunder Creek are my 2 goto models. Others that might fit the bill include Mustad 36620, Daiichi 1750, 2370, and TMC 9395. The straight eye hooks can be tough to find.
The head can be weighted with a few wraps of non-lead wire. The finish on the head can be done with UV resin as I have done in the video, but epoxy or several coats of clear lacquer will also work.

Okay so I love Blue on flies. Best colour for visibility, but in this case I would add a few strands of purple on the back. Do it on a long shanked 2/0 hook and use it for Coho in the salt. Great pattern old fellow!

Chimo big "D" :o) fine looking Thunder Creek. That hook looks nice too, what size is the demo? The Daiichi 1750 is close to the Partridge I think, is the 2370 harder or easier to tie on that looped eye? I have the book with Klausmeyer too. And I swear I just read something about the "elusive" blueback trout, is that a real fish?

Chimo, I keep forgetting you guys have your turkey day today. Agreed on the Uncle Dickie hooks, a little too long as well. If you can get the blued CS5, grab them (demo was on a size 4). The Bluebacks are a real fish, they are a small species of char and were at one point, a major food item for the Rangeley lakes brookies. Thanks for the video, I was wondering in what situation would one use a fly like this? I'm still learning the art of fly fishing :))
Stryker 2, thanks for the question. I use this in both still water and in streams where you are going after piscivores. Bass, trout (rainbows, browns, bulls, cutts, brookies), walleye, perch, and smaller pike would all be targets. You can troll the fly in ponds (I'd like to throw this on Muir or Star) or cast it. You'll want to give the fly a little action with the rod or by stripping a little line. Make it dance and dart a little to trigger strikes. You may need to add some weight to the leader or use a sinking line to get the fly to depth.

Thanks Louis. I don't recommend going with a kit. You'll end up with a lot of stuff you won't use. For flies, I'd just select a couple patterns and buy the materials you need for these. Tools, some scissors, whip finish, bobbin holder and hackle pliers are a good start. The Dr. Slick Eco scissors are good and the rest of the tools are quite inexpensive. For a vise, one of the best starter vises IMHO is a Crown. It is a Regal clone but holds the hooks fairly well.

That would be a good place to start and if you find you really enjoy it, you'll fill a room soon enough.
