Great video. I've been in construction for over 30 years. Your crews and the relationship you have with them is really important. The build schedule, procurement and everything else are just routine parts of the build script. The script is just papers without those laborers. Treat your subs and tradesmen with respect and always make sure that they have everything that they need to succede. These are the folks that can make you a rockstar. Be approachable, because you want them to feel like they can bring problems to you for solutions, not backlash. You don't want guys to scatter when you pull up because you rule with an iron fist. If you're confident, professional and appreciative, you will inspire them to do their best, and they will always be there for you. Just my two cents
I’ve never had the opportunity to be a superintendent, or even even given it any thought, but now I have become friends with a gentleman that’s about 10 years older than myself and he is a superintendent and says he loves what he does. As I am starting to have thoughts of what a superintendent of construction would be or do, this is the first video I watched. What good information! Thank you!! I really appreciate it! 👍
I was offered a position as a super and promised training when I accepted the job. I'm going to succeed but after 9 months this video has enlightened me more that anything else.
@Jason Schroeder I have just discovered your channel. I will be sure to read any and all recommendations as the company I work for gives absolutely no guidance or knowledge to pull from. If there is any training recommendations I am all ears.
This is some of the best advice you can get for becoming a superintendent or just improving your skills. I was just promoted from assistant superintendent to site superintendent and these skills definitely have helped me better manage my time and jobsite
Thank you Jason great video. I'm thinking seriously of taking a superintendent position, and doubting myself, but also realizing what your saying is what I've been doing for the last 10 years. I will continue watching all of your videos so keep them coming as I build up that confidence. Thank jason
Please make a video about what micromanagement is vs being an effective super. How some things can be viewed as micromanagement and how to build a culture of open learning and a coachable team players.
I appreciate the recipe to success. I’m currently on a DPR job here in Austin Texas and it’s always good to get refreshed on some valuable information. Appreciate your spending your time making these videos keep them coming.💪🏼🤙🏼
Dude you are awesome. I am captivated and can't skip any single second of your presentation. Love your energy, love your perspective and the way you put your mind through the words
Good job! Understand your position and ask questions to everyone. Nobody expects you to know everything but expects you to follow up with directions of the next step. Remember everyone loves to talk about themselves and what they know. Listen, ask them questions back so you understand. This helps in 2 ways. You gained respect from the individual and you know what their true question is.
@@jasonwilliamschroeder I have very little to no serious experience in construction but have been recruited for a superintendent position for a contracting firm that handles fast food/restaurant builds. Is it possible for me to excel at this position if I am a very hard worker, leader, numbers guy, quick learner, organized, dedicated, willing to put in long hours off the clock, and highly motivated? Or is this a very unrealistic situation for me?
Nice! I also carrer switched 2 years ago and was promised training and be a builder in a year lol. My role is Finish Manager on paper. As soon as my builder frames and drywall the place he orders cabinets and gives me the install date. From there I schedule everything else for install until it's 100%. I don't call in anything cement related. I also walk the houses under contract to check for damages or missing things and order materials and schedule with contractors. I do 1st walks and signoff with homeowners and submit any forms to my builder. My salary is 52k plus bonus and set # gas money per check. As of today I feel very confident in majority of what I do but I feel like I can earn more elsewhere but I'm scared of not having a degree or too much experience on paper & my builder will not teach me "I believe" more to be a builder because I'm a huge asset to him.
I would love to hear about the role of an assistant superintendent? For those who are trying to get their foot in the door with a home builder. Great video thanks Jason!
Great video a lot of help thank you Man, Next Monday i Gonna start as Project Superintendent in New York City 5th avenue i do this before but not at this level. So i very greatfull of any advice thanks
I would love if you made a more in depth video specifically for beginning or prospective Superintendents! Or a video on managing burnout with the Superintendent position requiring 6 day work weeks at times
How do I train my trade partners (subcontractors) when they are the "experts" and know more than me about their trades? I'm in a small TI company, and I feel I need to trust my subs to do their jobs. Thanks for your videos!
@@chadabernathey7033 it sounds silly, but be vulnerable and ask lots of questions. Trades want to help. They are good people. They will help you if you ask.
@jasonwilliamschroeder That's what I've been doing, and I've been learning every step of the way. Thanks for your response, and I'm sure you know how helpful you have been to forward-thinkers. Keep it up man.
Okay, so what if you’re procurement, design, the system is constantly failing. You’ve sent out emails, texts, meetings, and calls, and almost two years later, there is no change and now you’re struggling to keep the boat afloat? Do you sink with the ship or jump it?
Is there anyway I can talk to you guys, I currently have a opportunity to run my first jobsite but I haven’t had any real training it’s more of a lucky opportunity and I’m basically choosing to do it as a sink or swim approach, I want to be successful at this.
Jason, As a Superintendent I find myself rushing to get into the next task in my schedule and not giving the sub contractor enough time to finish their task. Which throws off my sequence in building my project. Any suggestions?
I’m on a job in alaska in a village the superintendent has no foreman and does not delegate or assigned a lead guy he started as an apprentice 8 years ago he is putting it all on the crew and it’s frustrating he is failing with budget and job has just begun just threatened us if we don’t make the task with in his budget we will get replaced I love the company but this guy is going to fail and blame us I’ve been a carpenter for 35 years he gives us wrong info and we have to recdo things any advice I don’t want to go over his head
The trained and qualified team comes with the vendor's team. How can one waste his/her time on an already qualified vendor team? Isn't this a waste of the superintendent's time?

The video is very useful, but how it could be my profile for get my first job as superintendent?
33 year old superintendent from texas its tough but we have ambition and agression
Can you do a video on Scheduling? We use 2 week look ahead but I like the 6 week idea
3 is better, 6 is too far and 2 is to close , in oil and gas is common 3 week look ahead

what is the difference between a superintendent and a project manager? who is higher on the ladder?

As a Superintendent I find myself rushing to get into the next task in my schedule and not giving the sub contractor enough time to finish their task. Which throws off my sequence in building my project. Any suggestions?
The only solution is Takt planning & the Last Planner System. There is no other way to correct this unfortunately.
Be the turtle--the turtle won the race. Never rush that's how bad things happen or worse people die.
Who trains the superintendent
We need training from anywhere we can get it. Other knowledgeable supers, training programs, and books.
But mas tarde bro?!
