In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shows you how Magnus Carlsen countered the Fried Liver Attack played by an Indian Grandmaster. It's a simple yet effective method that gave Magnus a winning position in just 10 moves.
While there are several ways to counter the Fried Liver Attack, such as the Traxler Counterattack, Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit, and the main line, they often come with the drawback of being too theoretical.
However, Magnus's approach (Polerio Defense, Bishop Check Line) is much easier to learn, simpler, and yet highly effective.

"you gotta know something, which is something i dislike." most relatable comment ever!
Nice catch there!! 😂
Challenge- do knight check. If he moves King then take queen with knight. If he captures knight then take queen with queen. He can’t take with Pawn as it is pinned by rook.
I liked the comment but then saw number of likes of left it there
Ne3+ picks up the queen due to pinned pawn
That was my solution too
Yes but then white takes with the queen and black loses both the bishop and knight for the queen, so it's not that decisive... even though white will obviously die quickly at this point, it's not done yet
Qh5+ might be better because it induces f3. After whites F pawn moves from f2, then the knight can fork without getting lost.
@@VitoPlaysGames The knight will be lost either way since white's bishop takes, after Qh5+ it's just a knight for bishop trade and the white queen will be safe since the black queen is no longer positioned to be able to take. Ne3+ does win a queen regardless of fxe3 or bxe3 due to pinned pawn as mentioned by OP
@@VitoPlaysGames g4!
Imagine trying to beat the best player ever with the Fried Liver Attack 😂
It does seem foolish. I have won with it at lower levels of chess but I wouldn't try it against a GM.
Dare to believe.
Why is it foolish? The fried liver is a pretty sound opening according to Stockfish AND according to the masters games database on lichess.
It’s a legitimate opening and it wins white a pawn. Imagine making a snarky comment about something you have no clue about.
Optimism of the year award
7:22 Ne3+, and if they take, Qxc4 and they can't retake because of the pin.
Amazing. Carlson is so consistent. He loves open positions and active pieces. He doesn’t prioritise captures over increased activity. I love watching his streamed games when he says “Boring!” and proceeds to play bizarre tactical moves to throw acid on the board.
Winning move seems to be Ne3+, because the queen is not defended as the pawn on d3 is pinned to the king, so whatever white's response, black's next move is to take the Queen.
Oh nice, didn't notice the discovered pin.
Can't their panw just take it? How's that winning?
Okay nevermind okay so more specifically, Ne3+, they will most likely take with pawn or bishop, then white queen takes black queen due to the double pin in the center with the rooks.
We never minded@@thomasgrabowski2202
Winning move is Qh5 imgo, then he must block with the pawn then you fork the queen and the king at e3
This is not fried liver. This game is two knights defense. Fried liver is when black takes the pawn on d5 then white sacs knight for the f7 pawn.
I would say that Black falls into the Fried Liver when he takes the ...d5-pawn.
I LOVE your videos [ & accompanying analyses ] :
they always explain exactly why I somehow SAW the beauty of the positions that I recognised when I watched the game
[ without even fully understanding the subtelties of the game ]
Thanks Igor great video here and I just HAD to go do the blog post 1/2 way thru lol also a great game by Magnus.... you sir are a genius in chess, I love the continuation you gave. Glad to be in Smirnov land once again. Cheers brother. ;8^)
No shorts. I like the extensive explanations like this.
Quite informative video. Now due to videos by Igor, Fried Liver is something that make you smile if your opponent ever play it against you. Pawn to B5 variation video is very good and seems to be one very interesting solution against Fried Liver.
Thanks @GMIgorSmirnov.

07:03 Quiz: Can you find the winning moves?
Puzzle solution:
1. Ne3+ Bxe3 2. Qxc4
(1... fxe3 2. Qxc4)
(1... any king move 2. Nxc4
paulhan3314 is correct: The Fegatello Attack (aka "Fried Liver") occurs only when Black plays 5...Nxd5 and White responds with the sacrifice 6. Nxf7. All the moves you're showing in your video are simply variations of the main line of the Two Knights Defense starting with 5...Na5.
Sir you make some really good videos appreciate you
That was brilliant! I learned a lot from that. It is a potential repertoire changer! Keep up the good work. You're awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@GMIgorSmirnov By the way, what is the difference between a player who is rated 200 ELO compared to a player who is rated 2200 Elo?
Sorry, but this is not the Fried Liver Attack. The Fried Liver Attack is a specific variation of the Two Knights Defence after d5; ed Nxd5, Nxf7!?, but Carlsen did not let white play the Fried Liver since he played Na5 instead.
This is just another variation in the Two Knights Defence.
To win at the end, check with the knight? Queen takes queen then white cannot recapture with pawn because it is pinned
Well Fried Liver, everyone will try this line to defend it now.
For the quiz, I believe the correct move is Ne2+ and no matter what white plays, Qxc4 will win the queen since the d3 pawn is pinned to the king, it cannot take back
thanks so much
Thx, real useful! Can’t White play c4 to save d5 though?
Anyone looking at this video should watch the actual game. It shows what an amazing genius Carlsen is in the middle game and end game. You can't teach that. He's got a power that very few have. Go through the game move by move and you probably won't be able to figure what he is going to do next with most of his moves.
It also shows why, at the higher levels of play, openings aren't that important. A guy like Magnus just needs to get past the opening phase without making a blunder, and then he'll destroy you after that. That's why he uses so many unusual openings. He's showing the world that, to him, they really don't matter that much.
Informative thanks ❤
❤
this is brilliant. love it.

What tournament is this game from?
Always wondered about moving the Bishop to attack its peer Bishop in this situation, but assumed some deadly combo was awaiting it. But the book remains open for a good White counter attack - right?
With the quiz at the end, I'm seeing two options but I don't know which one is better N e3 + (trying a royal fork) or Q h5 + (gaining a tempo while removing the pin).
Answer to the puzzle is Ne3+ and it doesn't matter how white takes the knight you can just take his queen by your queen and the pawn cannot recapture because of the pin
I always go for the fried liver as white. Must have dozens of games in it, but maybe only one or two with 6 . . . Bishop d7. I sure hope your video does not start a trend!
this channel is so under-rated
1. Ne3+ ... If fxe3 or Bxe3
Then 2. Qxc4 the d pawn is pin
If king moove, KnightxQueen c4
Nc3 check. Kd2, Re2 mate
NC3+ fork, if bishop or pawn takes, you take queen if king moves you take queen.
Discovered check with Knight is continuation
...ne3+...revealing an attack on the White Queen which is actually undefended, as it's apparent defender (P on d3) is pinned by the rook on d8.
Qh2 if f2 then knight e2 forking the Queen. If King d2 then Qe2 mate
Why not b4 in stead of Nc3. Where does Magnus knight go?
Great work ❤
❤
please think after Queen takes G7 Bishop F6 is the right. move
Someone tell me why b4 doesn't trap blacks Knight
I think Qeen e7 is the best follow up. The best move white have is Queen e4. then black Queen takes Queen on e4 and pawn takes e4 and knight jumps to c6 with a doubble check from rook and knight. White King must go to d1 and rook take pawn on e4 with check. . As I see it black stands much better here and will win a piece or even checkmate the white King
I always play rybka variation against Fried liver attack. it's very tricky and most of times opponent fall into trap
Winning position @7:19 :- 1. Ne3+ Bxe3 2. Qxc4.
White already didnt play best move pretty early on. Queen to e2 was his last "book move."
The traditional set up IMO just gives a super active position for black.
Im just suprised a GM played this and was out of theory so quick.
I have a qwestion igor how you decide which side to castle generaly?
In chess, it's generally advisable to castle early for king's safety. If the kingside is less exposed and the center is stable, castling kingside is common. If the center is open or the kingside is vulnerable, castling queenside might be a better choice. Evaluate the position and prioritize king safety. Consider factors like pawn structure, king safety, and potential attacks on both sides before deciding.
best chess channel ever
Ne3+ wins the queen. If the Knight is captured, then Qxc4 as the d pawn is pinned to the king. If the king moves then Nxc4
Bishop takes pawn b2 -deflects white's dark-squares bishop.
Bishop on b2 must be taken, otherwise Nc3 is disaster. When white takes Bxb2 then white plays Qh5+ and if f3 then Ne3+ wins the Queen. If instead of f3 white moves the king Kd2 then white gives check mate with Qe2++.
If after 1.Bb2 black plays Re1 then Nc3+ followed by Qf2+
Ne3+, they will most likely take with pawn or bishop, then white queen takes black queen due to the double pin in the center with the rooks.
Thank you.
Qh5+ is the best response, followed by Bxb2, and white is in all kinds of trouble, this is much better than either Knight-check move. 😈
Qh5, followed by bishop b2, followe by knight e3 forking the king and the queen or taking the rook for free if bishop declines
Ne3+ wins the queen straight away, because the pawn on d3 is pinned
Ne3 check is the queen winning move
Ne3+ followed by Qxc4
Try N-e3 ch, PxN, QxQ and black is a Queen ahead because the pawn is pined. If the king moves, knight captures Queen. If B captures Knight, Queen captures Queen and White pawn cannot capture recaotures because that exposes the King to check.
Instead of playing Nc3, white should have played b4. Black knight is completely trapped. I am around 1600 elo. So I may not be accurate.
In this position 5:07, Can't we go bishop to f6? Doesn't it trap the queen?
When I looked at the Stockfish analysis, it did not score Black's 6th move as anything close to equal between Bd7 (+0.7 after the move) and c6 (0.0). Carlsen was lucky that Pranesh returned the favor with the inaccurate trade on d7. Had he withdrawn his knight to f3 instead, he would have maintained his advantage at that point.
So it's a draw instead of a draw ^^
I play the Pirc and it's surprising the number of people who play the Fried Liver automatically without thinking and find themselves down a pawn and a knight after 4 moves.
loving the shorter videos.
why doesn't White Q on re take e5?
KNight to e3 winning move?
Queen to a5, white pawn to c3, knight to d3=fork king & queen.
Question: at 2:23, why doesn't white move Pe4, capturing the Black N ? What am I missing?
Correction: Pb4, capturing the black Knight?
Solved: BxP
What is this notation
Amazing!
Oh wise and mighty ones...
I always wondered why no one played Bd7, interesting.
Qh5 check, Bg6 mate
Nc3 check. If Qxc3, Bxc3. If Nxc3, Qxc4.
I play like Carlsen since 20 years 🥰. I am so strong finaly. 😁
Wow
Queen to H5, Forcing pond to block, Bishop to B2, forcing Bishop to take, Knight to E3, forking the Queen, Knight takes Queen
After Qh5,g4 , Bb2 loses the queen (pawn takes H5)
Opponent must have tried scholars mate , surely would have worked 😂
Instead of knight a5 why not knight d5? Isn't that what it is there for?
Queen h5, bishop g5 mate, bishop f4, knight takes queen
Genius magnus
Who needs to know the opponent and the time control? Certainly not me .
Puzzle at the end: Ne3+ fxc3 and i take the queen with my queen because the pawn is pinned by the rook!
Quiz
1) … ; Ne3+
2) Bxe3 ; Qxc4
why not just tell us?
Just seeing
Who is the "Indian GM"? Where is the link to watch this game played?
Answer to the quiz: white Qxc4 is met wth ...Ne3+
Check with the knight then take queen
Knight e3
Free queen due to the pin and knight fork. :)
Qh5 chech
Give check take Queen
Chess players have sheepish tendencies.
No one mentioned Bd7 but it now looks obvious.
Anyway, what was wrong with holding the d5 pawn with c4?
..., QH5+,
f3, Bxb2, if white takes Ne3, if not we get a rook
Pranesh is probably scarred for life from this
Ne3+ I think, and we win the queen
Is a tactic necessary here? Queen e6 threatens mate in one. If the queen takes the night the game is over.
Knight e3 check and opponent queen get lost
Op name... Proness😂😂😂😂
Crazy. The fried liver IS supposed to be the counter 🤣
Nd3 then win a Queen
