Beloved was my first Morrison novel and it almost felt like the first book I have ever read because it was such a strong reading experience for me. Since then I picked up the Bluest eye and can't wait to read the rest of her work. An author like no other
I really admire how well you articulate what you like/dislike about each book. Picked up Mantel on your recommendation (I read Fludd) and loved it, looking forward to reading more of her work. Thanks :)
I simply adore Sula by Toni Morrison. It is the first Morrison that I have read and I will read all of her novels because of it. Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro is one of my favourite books and I think Sula pairs beautifully with it. They both explore girlhood and womanhood and when friendship formed in youth grow strained because of different life trajectories.
I would just like to say, and I apologize if this comes off oddly, but I love how you discuss books. It brings me back to my English degree and I love it. I also think it would be really interesting to compare They and Fahrenheit 451.
This was the perfect ‘intro to your channel’ video! ❤ So frustrating that something keeps getting at your plants! We put up a rabbit fence but Ken saw one jump over it to get in and crawl under it to get out 🙄😒 so…that worked well 😂
I am going to try listening to Sula! I have always been a sit-down reader but want to get more into audiobooks, especially ones narrated by the author themselves. I would love if you made a video sometime about books that are particularly great to listen to as audiobooks.
Ah I hope you enjoy it! Morrison's voice is just wonderful, though she's so breathy and the recording is quite old so it is sometimes hard to hear her 😅 headphones are a must! Would love to do some audiobooks recs! Will put it on my list.
Morning Jess, slightly off topic, but if your not planning an empty bedroom tour. Please can you tell me where your current bedroom wall paper is from? I’ve been here all the years, still love your channel. I am keen to know and purchase for myself. I’ve never heard you mention it. Thanks xx
I just started The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison today! That's so serendipitous. It's her debut novel, so I think I might try to read her whole catalogue in order of publication. I've never done that with an author before so it sounds like a fun challenge!
I picked up a couple of Smiley's on your recommendation and started with a dangerous business - so glad to hear you didn't like it too because i was worried they would all be like that 😂
I think the ending of Birnam Wood should be taken as metaphorical (would like to say more but I'm mindful not to go into spoiler territory). I found the first half very flat but it became more compelling as it went on. In all honesty I can't decide where I sit with it as a whole.
Just stumbled upon this channel and I'm curious, could any subscribers tell me why it has over 400k subs but so few comments and views? Did she use to put out different content and just recently switched to booktube?
Welcome, chair 👋🏼 Thanks for supporting Jess' back.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one, Jess - well done.

definitely agree that Sula is a great place to start with Morrison, having read 4 of her works so far!

Please read Butchers Crossing and let us know what you think!!
Definitely going to read this before the end of the year!! 🤞🏻

Plus I have beloved on my shelf, so I'm excited to hear your thoughts in July!
Final addition! I just checked and Sula is next on the order of publication, so your glowing review has made me even more excited for this challenge!
I love Mantel as well and loved Joan, by Katherine J. Chen. I think you might like it!
Where do you get your books from? Amazon, book stores, used online??
I wrote one of my third year assignments on Dawn by Octavia Butler and I loved it! I have a different edition, but the one you have is gorgeous!

Oh god her older stuff is so much more masterful 😅
