I love it! I have 6 hydrangeas I rescued from the clearance dumping shelf. Seriously, they just stacked a bunch of "dead" plants, parked the shelves all the way in back of the garden center of Walmart, I was like omg, these are just neglected, they're not beyond saving! So, yep, they were just waiting for Ms Cheapo (me) to (stubbornly) nag them back to health. And they've rewarded me with years of beauty & happiness! I even scored a "Pistachio" & a "Cityline Paris" this way!

I do the same, and I don’t even know that much about gardening. I rescued a dying rose plant bush from Home Depot 4 or 5 years ago, and it’s still hanging in there.
I learned from my mother and father and, then, after many decades of not gardening beyond the occasional indoor potted plant or two, I dove into gardening my postage-stamp sized townhouse front and back yards and my deck. It’s fun, relaxing and meditative! Thanks Mommy & Daddy!🙏🏾♥️🌱🪴😌

You have a magic touch with hydrangeas. I planted 3 pink hydrangeas last year. My first hydrangeas ever. Well in March of this year I cut 2 of the plants back because all the stems looked dead. Yep, those 2 are very bushy and growing very big but no flowers. The third uncut hydrangea is flowering pink but is little. Yes, lesson learned. Dumb luck, I did plant them in the correct flower bed where they all get morning sun and afternoon shade. I water them when the leaves look a little droopy. Thank you for this video and all of your knowledge.

  • @Burningheartcelosia

Sooooo, hydrangeas in pots love and require a lot of watering. Try also become somewhat root bound in a pot in growth is high - which is why they need watered so much in pots and containers - not enough soil remains and water runs right through and drains out and there’s not enough soil to remain wet for long in between waterings especially when you add in high temps, evaporation, wind.
Hydrangeas do love full sun but they need irrigated heavily when in the full sun while requiring very well-drained soil. If you have a flower bed with hydrangeas and other plants in it and you already have a drip irrigation system hooked up, you’d need to go behind the drip and water the hydrangeas a second time. This keeps them from burning in the sun. Watering as early as possible in the day helps too because they can have full “water tanks”
So to speak, before the brutal peak of temps come upon them. This is especially true the first year they are planted. And second. And during any extreme droughts - like we experienced where I am this summer.
Hydrangeas cannot stand sitting in swampy or damp soil for any amount of time. In June my area had intense rainfall for the entire month and established hydrangeas had a horrible time blooming if they ever did because all nutrients washed away from beds but also they sat wet for practically a month. If flower beds and yards collected water near them where a homeowner wasn’t area because we hadn’t had rain like this before, they were not happy - drains, gutters, run off, clay or saturated soil and bad drainage and smaller root systems all equaled a hydrangea nightmare especially for ones in part sun or mostly shade.
Proven winners website: “This extremely durable, long-lived plant is easy to grow. It likes full sun in cold climates, afternoon shade in warmer ones, but it does require well-drained soils that do not remain soggy for any amount of time. “

Good morning! You and a few others I watch on TH-cam are a force WITH nature :)! inspired me to keep a lookout for clearance plants. Yesterday, I was in Wal-Mart. Wasn't expecting anything (early in the season) and there they were... EIGHT half-dead hydrangea plants with about two small hydrangea in each little decorative box. They were obviously meant for folks to buy them for Mother's Day gifts. About 10.00 a piece. Half the blooms were brown, drooping leaves and blooms. Told the manager he wouldn't be able to sell these at full price like this. I got them 10% off!!! Brought them home, gave them all a trim and watered them well. By this morning... they had perked right up! So, planting them today or tomorrow in a flower bed I wasn't going to work until next year. lol This was a gold mine. 8 young hydrangea plants neglected and left for dead and will fill that flower bed with color very soon! :) Thank you for all of your videos that inspire me and so many others!

Great video - I wish I’d found it earlier when I was freaking out about my hydrangeas. I don’t know what kind I have and I was so confused about new/old wood. I pretty much ended up doing what you recommend - trying to not overthink it and letting them be til spring. They look good now and I was able to do a light pruning that I don’t think will cost me any blooms. But if I’d seen your video back in fall/winter it sure would’ve given me peace of mind! Thanks for the video. I have a black thumb, but I bought a house where the previous owner loved flowers, and I inherited some beautiful stargazer lilies, gladioli, roses and a couple of hydrangeas. They are the big leaf variety. One is in partial shade and is doing fantastic, but the other gets too much sun and got scorched when I didn’t start watering it fast enough when it stopped raining and the summer heat kicked in (I’m in 8b in Vancouver WA). You give me hope that I might be able to bring it back next season. I have been watering it and I do see a little new growth in the back, so it’s not completely dead.

I just found five quick fire hydrangeas Lowe's. Gorgeous from Clarence and I'm getting ready to take care of my baby and love them so they can show off me next year. Feeling great. Thanks for the encouragement

Thank you for making a statement about that big leaf hydrangeas can't stand more sun than 3-4 hours in the morning - yes, it's very misleading, and I'm sure many beginner gardeners fail with macrophyllas because of that. Just put them in a place, where they enjoy a few sunny hours in the morning, then they get shade, and they will thrive! :)

this was very helpful. most of the videos I came across was talking about the burnt leaves (which I also have) but my petals also burnt up to. the nursery garden seller told me to put them in full sun (or at least he told me that's what would make the color pop) so 3 weeks after having them they went from healthy to brown and brittle. I watered every other day, but they are not in the ground yet, if that makes a difference?
I can tell they have some life left in them because the leaves and bottom stems are green.
I thought it was possible to remove the bad parts, but didn't know how until you explained it. I do see buds coming up along the bottom parts of the stems. They are still in the original pots, so now I know to put them or plant them in a shadier or partial sun area.
why oh why did that man tell me to put them in the sun???

Thank you for all your tips, you’re amazing! Please include a “PART 2” addressing the black spots on the leaves and how to treat them. I’m not sure if it is fungus or pest but most of the ones I see at local shops have it. Earlier this summer I bought three (2sandy summer, 1 Fuji) hydrangeas at Lowe’s and are all dying (Sadly I paid full price). Now that I have found your channel, i have been taking better care of them. But the new leaves are also turning brown... I don’t know what to do because I keep cutting them back and the leaves keep getting “infected” . Your help will be greatly appreciated. Blessings!
Ps: it is not due to over sun exposure. I keep them in afternoon shade.

You have leaf spots| fungus. Discard all the affected area and spray your plant with neem oil. You can find it at any big box store.

Thank you. I was recently told by someone else that too much watering is bad. I have 20 plants I just got from the nursery. They sat over a sunny weekend ( still in the pots) without being watered and most of them wilted really bad.

Hi dear☺️my goal was to buy hydrangeas to go across the ten foot horizontal abyss in front of one of my church buildings. After watching your videos I had the confidence to look for some at LOWES. OMGOODNESS 🥰I found 5 on the clearance rack marked down to $12.50 from $24.50….. but wait!!!! 2 of them were in pretty bad condition….. I mean like really baaaaad☺️but I trust YOU and God☺️when I went to checkout the manager said I could have alllllll of them for $35. $7 bucks a piece. I think you should be proud of me😂😂😂♥️♥️ I was thinking about you the whole time putting them in my car. I live in Philly. It’s going to be too hot this week for me to put them in the ground….diggin holes and all…..soooooo my question is “Will they be ok for about a week sitting in water??” They are root bound and pretty dry. Thank you.

God bless🙏🏼 I am a die hard Plantaholic and Hydrangea are one of my favorites because my Daddy's Mother had them all around her house when we were all little. Of course, I never meet a plant I don't love. LOL

Here in San Antonio, where temps have been in the triple digits, sometimes I have to water twice a day.
Just starting with hydrangeas. Have to find some shady spots.

Love your vlog. I just received a 4.5 in Incrediball that I mail ordered from HD. It was lost in the mail and sat at UPS for 13 days since shipping. I’m soaking the poor thing in water and will give it morning sun and shade and fingers crossed/prayers I can bring the baby back to life. Thank you for the tips I have some newly planted limelights in my flower bed. I will ensure they are kept up with the watering. 🌸🌞🌹🌺🥀

I just bought an endless summer hydrangea and saw it said full sun and I was so confused cause I thought all hydrangeas prefer morning sun/dappled sun, and thats what they were going to get at my house.
