Lots of good information! Thank you. I'm in the Manitoba interlake. I can't believe you put rabbits in your greenhouse lol. Your hard work is paying off! Awsome job!
Love your setup and the goal for using the Chinese greenhouse curtain in-between the layers. I am located in Nebraska..no we didn't do a greenhouse in the snow...but instead a fairly decent insulated 14 by 30 greenhouse utilizing the north wall of my husband's shop. We double layered the walls..basically both sides of the studs using 8mil plastic with the bottom three foot being insulated and sided and with earth on the outside up a couple feet and extending out several feet. Roof double layered both sides of rafters10 mil plastic. Goal is to switch the outer plastic to polycarbonate panels this summer. I wanted to see if I could heat a big tent ...lol I need to keep my greenhouse 65 F degrees so we heat with a 45,000 btu pellet furnace which also heats my husband's shop. If the sun is shining the stove is turned off and then the heat from the greenhouse is blown into the shop. I wish we had more sunny days, we average around 200 a year...grrr Our cost for this set up was a little over a thousand dollars not counting the pellet furnace that we already had. We also utilized warped lumber and other salvaged materials. Main cost was the plastic. but I'm here to tell you...even in Nebraska you still need a heat source at night. The individuals that have gone with the greenhouse in the snow builds have had to use supplemental heat at night. We toured some before we built our greenhouse. We can get some pretty cold temps in Jan and Feb. -20f and highs during the day 0 degrees or less. I really enjoyed your videos on how you built your greenhouse.
Ground temps are much colder where I live. Would have been nice for one air tube system as just an air exchanger though. We are suited well with over 300 sunny days per year, even though it’s bitterly cold. ✌️
@ArkopiaTH-cam I was surprised to learn how many days of sun you get that far north. I had seen the guy's video a few years back raising tomatoes commercially in the chinese greenhouse with the blanket system and wondered how it could possibly work, but with that many sunny days now I understand why. Envious of your days of sun but sure not envious of the bitter cold temps. We have a frost line of aprox 4 foot...so water lines must be at least 5 foot in the ground. I know...I hand dug a water line from the well to my husband's shop...lol it was too narrow of an area to get a piece of equipment into the area. Thankful I did not have to go down 12 foot...yikes !!!!!
Wow! 2 videos in, so impressed with your work. You are offering a masterclass! The government should give tax credits for those that follow your designs.
I live in San Diego California and I truly believe thats so many people here think they get wrecked by the government here ass well as you do. it seems to be a universal problem.
Here in Iowa (zone 5) our coldest month is January. Wouldn’t it make sense that we design our greenhouse to those sun angles? As well, I learned by hunting geese by Kindersley, that the coldest part of the day is just before sunrise. Should be slightly angle our greenhouse a bit to the east in order to get a quick morning warm up & shun that hotter afternoon sun later in the year?
Could argue you want west to get an evening warm up before night too. I have read that a slight twist to east is what a few people have done. But all said and done it is about calculating angles at solar noon. Any other tweaks you make will change something else on the design. More morning sun is less evening sun. 👍✌️
I think Curtis’s idea is also to be self sufficient because of the crazy Canadian government, so if the natural gas lines get get shut down he can still manage. Also he’s pretty far out so not sure if it would cost more to get a line out to his property than to set the up the solar system. Love this content!!
14° at the winter solstice @ your location of 52°.16 ' .. At the 49th parallel (49°North latitude), there's a 3 degree difference so your overhangs at the eaves would have to be less than 48 " .I'm I on the right track? There must be a equation that folks can punch their latitude in and get their roof angle for both winter and summer sun angles . I used to know this stuff when I was in carpenter school. 53° north latitude is also the number you subtract from 90° equals 47 ° is the sun angle off the southern horizon on June 21st .& 33° Less in the winter on December 21~24 equates to 47 - 33 =14 ° . Hi Dean! I love that you touched on the Walapini. I dug 2ft down and built my greenhouse on a retaining wall built from garage panels and 2x4 construction. My pony wall is 3ft then we have 2ft of double pane windows. My south end is at 45 degrees, snow slides off but does accumulates.. Luckily I can shovel it away in a few minutes and low angle sun rays can enter once again. I think I have a sunken greenhouse vs walapini? I am however worried about snow melt. We have weeping tile around the perimeter of the greenhouse. Thoughts on flooding? Cheers!
That’s not too terribly deep. I guess keep just that melting snow away. We’ve had some dumps of snow and the snow even gets 5 ft in front of my greenhouse. ✌️
You could use well water that has high co2 and offgass it in a "degassing" chamber. Some saltwater tanks with reverse osmosis systems and well water have high co2 in their pure water. One solution was to offgas the clean water first.
Stupidity is right . . . tax doesn't make any sense. If a tax is punishment (sin tax) then why is there income tax? Punishing you to earn income? There isn't any natural gas here in the Columbia Valley BC so it's propane which is very expensive especially here where I believe BC has higher carbon tax . You are building a life that you don't have to take a vacation from!!! Awesome!
Hi Dean. Thank you for another great educational video, I will be watching it many times. I have have considered most of the issues you covered also, trying to come up with win win designs. I was wondering if you think it would work to vent your exhaust from the furnace into the greenhouse to get increase co2? We have a non vented heater in our basement that doesn't need to be vented. We only use it in emergencies. Thanks again.
Of course I figured should ask some gas fitting guys, and they said no to venting into the space. But I don’t know why not. I’ve seen those ventless heaters, so what’s the difference. 🤷🏻♂️ The CO2 generator doesn’t vent either. 🤷🏻♂️
Hi, great videos. I am planning the same basically, but stand alone building. Having a very hard time finding the 16' poly panels. Can you share where you got them from? Thanks, Brad
My solar set up cost about US$40K. Did not do it for the environment but because we are miles away from the last pole on the grid. Did not need a system as big as we got (14KW) but .. why not :-) The Solar system not actually necessary either, We have Propane for heat, cooking and generator etc, don’t need Propane either as we have 3 primary Wood heat/cooking sources and paraffin lamps if all else fails. Trying to cater for all situations.

Not a great comparison but for what its worth I just had built a 65’ x 54’ free span steel free span building.with concrete floor, 5 garage type doors, 3 man doors and about 9 windows of various sizes. All new including labour (our off grid forever home) US$220K (completed 2022) Not counting septic, 1000g propane tank and instal, 3 x 2200 gallon installed underground water tanks etc.
Thanks for that. Might help out some folks. Approximately what area of the US? ✌️🙏 Ps: there is no way you’d get that building value in Canada. Someone close to me is building a 4000 square foot house, plus finished walk out basement, with 4 car garage, and the build is 1 million Canadian dollars, not including utility services and septic tank, and not including the land. ✌️
@@ArkopiaTH-cam Good lord someone is making money there! We are northern Idaho. I will add that the bid was done in Oct 2020 but the building got "that bug" I guess and was delayed a year (whatever). The manufacturer wanted an additional US$20K by the time they got to it, I told them no. The same building I would not be surprised if it were now US$300K. Our next plan is a root cellar and small version of a insulated passive greenhouse, probably 20' x 30'. We live 6 hours south this property and will be permanent there by June!
