I agree. Living in Australia we don't wear bland clothes like these. We tend to like bold and colourful patterns. And everything seems to be more formal/business wear - the clothes I wore when working in London. This is a great idea, but I can't see how I could make it work 🤔

As soon as I saw this video, I sorted as you did. Sorted shoes, purse, etc I have to dress daily for work and can’t wait to get up in morning to get dressed!
I just had my closet done by closet company. I designed it to be very simple because I have a minimal wardrobe of neutrals ,red is one of my good colors so I have a red as an accent color. It’s easy for me to get dress because everything goes together. I’m retired and I don’t go out much, but I still dress for my day mostly dog walking and out enjoying the sun. I live where it’s very warm in the California desert during the day. The coldest it ever is about 50°. It can be cold at night, but I don’t go out much at night. I have a lot of linen and in the winter I wear corduroy. I have cashmere sweaters in the winter and I love Lily silk, silk blouses. Thank you for doing this video. Everyone needs to go through their things and find out what they are not wearing and get rid of it. So much easier to have a small closet.
My closet, my entire bedroom, is a disaster! I started decluttering and then got sick, then got depressed, and just now able to face it. So glad this video popped up today! 🦋🦋🦋

Thank you for narrowing down the closet in a reasonable size. The majority of us probably have small closets not those room size ones. We love this quick visual to a reasonable capsule wardrobe. We all want to keep a scaled down capsule. Show us more like this.
I have quite a small wardrobe, but it does need a bit of a declutter. I didn't buy anything during 2 years of lockdown/wfh and in the meantime managed to lose nearly 20 kg (which I needed to lose). When I emerged from all that I did try very hard to follow Marie-Anne's principles to rebuild my wardrobe, but ...some "mistakes were made." I have to face up to them and move the duds out. Thanks for the inspiration to just deal with it Marie-Anne!

This is timely, thanks, MA. I began a round of decluttering yesterday and will do another closet section today. My wardrobe isn’t messy, there’s just too much of everything! I’m starting by eliminating clothes in cheap fabrics that don’t get worn because they irritate my skin or make me overheat. I bought too many of these items from fast-fashion during the long lockdown, over two years in my case (high risk). I used to be more selective and followed a one-in, one-out rule, but when I stopped doing that, that quantity of items got out of control. I’ve already purged at least 20 big bags full, but there’s still more to go. I have many tops that are just too long for my petite frame and can’t be tucked in, I’ll purge those, too (manufacturers keep making simple tops like tees in tunic-length, but that’s long out of style. It’s difficult to gauge length when they don’t give measurements or the model’s height, if there’s even a model wearing the item in the photos, I always surprised to get tees that go down to my thighs).
Kimberly, you've hit on one of my pet peeves about online shopping - the lack of product dimensions! Those retailer sizing charts are just useless and the high cost of shipping returns back means that if it doesn't fit I either donate it or pay to have it altered. I did learn that Lilysilk will email you very detailed dimensions if you put a ticket in. Boden is pretty good too at their customer service game....
If you have a sewing machine, or needle thread and scissors, try tailoring blouses to the correct length. Start with your less liked and then move to ones that could become favorites.
Being able to adjust your own clothes opens up your options rather than restricting them.
That curated rail looks so calming! It reminds me of an expensive shop, where it looked like a jumble sale before (even though the clothes are definitely not jumble sale quality!)
Thank you! I have purchased some fabric/see through storage boxes to utilize my off season clothing and handbags. I feel so much better, now I know where everything is, so much easier to find. I do this at the end of each season, and transfer the new seasons clothing. It also helps decluttering, put the stuff in bags and off to donate it! I do the same, I launder my jumpers and put them in boxes in the loft, getting down my summer wear. Usually do this around May time.
I love that idea of speed being of the essence as I'm a shocker at putting things into a bag for charity then a few days later rifling through the bag and humming and harring, just need to be decisive (I'm a terrible over thinker at the best of times!) Thanks so much for this fab video x

This has really helped me. I am a mature lady and like nice quality clothes. I decluttering my wardrobe (before watching this )and ended up getting rid of most of my clothes and the clothes I have left I don’t really like. I am now determined to start a capsule ward robes like you have just done. Thank you so much ❤️

I live in northeast Ohio near Lake Erie. Our winter has been mild this year. I always make sure I have several tops I can layer during winter, i.e. quilted vests, medium to heavy sweaters and on and on. ❄️☃️🌬

As you know from my many questions and comments I have been watching your videos nonstop😘. I was looking through my closet and getting rid of some items. I was also looking for my scarves. I had many, many handed down to me. I then realized I had started to go through my closet last year and got rid of all of them. I am now crushed😢

Fantastic video! I purged my closet but I learned more tips here and now I am rethinking how I organized it. I’m reading through your book, “How To Be Chic & Elegant” and have been applying your tips and continually see improvement, even my husband notices. But I have a long way to go. The journey is worth it. I feel better about what I wear, and how I look now than when I was in my 20’s-40’s as I am more conscious of what works and what doesn’t work for me and why. Thank you so much.
Now I need the ambition to organize my nightgown/pj drawer and workout outfit closet.

I’ve been organizing my tops by sleeve length, my trousers by color and length. I don’t have any skirts, but do have a few dresses. I’ve been folding my sweaters.
Playing catchup with this one but I applied this technique with my wardrobe (with each of several different colour schemes) and categories and I cannot believe the difference! I can see combinations for outfits now that I would never have thought of! Thank you!

Loved this! It really sparked me to reorganize my closet and declutter.
I have enjoyed this very much! This is my week for tackling the closet, so it was timely. I had actually done a decluttering a little over a year ago, though there are a lot of things remaining that I think I can get rid of. I am thinking of putting together seasonal capsules out of the clothes I already have that aren't too big. I would hang these in the closet. The "active" wardrobe would hang on the outside of the closet on a rack similar to yours with space at the bottom for folded t-shirts, underwear, and shoes. The rack I am looking at has space for a rack at the bottom plus floor space beneath for the shoes. This will make everything conveniently accessible and I can simply keep the closet closed.

Great tips as usual. I always move my off season clothes out of the closet and into the cedar chest. I usually "purge" my closet at that time based on what I actually enjoyed wearing. If I didn't wear it at all that season ...it goes to Good Will. It is a chore but his so necessary. Your help is always welcome.
This was simply genius! I have been struggling with how to put my closet together for several years now. I have all my bottoms, bootcut jeans, skinny jeans etc...separated with the shoes I can wear with them, and all my shirts are sorted by color. Seems like I'd have something to wear, ugh, nightmare! But now, this simple capsule wardrobe will help immensely! This way I can see what I need in that color scheme too. Thank you so much. And yes...love watching closet organization methods, not much out there that I have found.

Fab, fast sort. I have many beloved basics in neutral tones with some favourite accents. For example I noticed you moved out very good pieces that did not match this capsule but they still belong in the wardrobe. I have have to stick to categories, light to dark but the palette includes all colours. I keep pants -black, dark grey, navy, dark brown, camel, beige etc. colours mixed and not only capsule colour!? It works I can’t over think it. Lol.
Very good video! I liked how you started with the colors & didn’t think about fit until after you were done editing the colors. This makes the whole process easier! Also, it was such a good visual of a capsule wardrobe. I can’t wait to get started!

I'm a few hours late for your live chat (it's 2p here in America). I just took another several tops to the thrift store. I also went through the dresser drawers and threw out old tights, socks and pantyhose that are either too big or snags. Scarves I keep in a separate dresser drawer. I also went through the tops and pants I wear while I'm gardening. I threw out those items that were really bad and kept two changes of garden clothes. I keep them in a separate closet. I do coordinate colors in my everyday closet and then it's so easy to grab and go.
Regarding sweaters...I really have no drawers at this time to fold and put them in. But I do hang them on padded hangers so they don't end up with peaks on the shoulders. As far as hangers I have all plastic hangers, some for pants with the clips, and others for tops. I have separate wicker baskets for those hangers I put them in then on laundry day I can grab them and hang my clothes up after drying. I'm on a roll. 😁
I just realized that I group my clothing by type...pants, skirts, tops, sweaters, dresses. In each category I group them by color. But your suggestion to group them by type then color family first makes more sense. Thank you.

I recently discovered your videos, and I am so grateful for all your advice. My closet is a disaster, so I am purchasing your decluttering the closet book. My closet is disaster because I have clothing in multiple sizes, some of which don’t fit and I absolutely love, love, love color, so I have a hard time narrowing down to just a few colors for the capsule wardrobe. My base color is navy - would love to see a declutter video based on navy. I’ve got a lot to learn!!!

I have been organizing my clothes in similar way since my childhood, and it really works for me. Sorting clothes by category and within the category by color from light to dark. Same for shoes and handbags, they are kind of sorted by categories, by size and by color. Makes my life easier, so I don’t have to dig into pile of anything to find what I am looking for.
I also make sure that everything is stored properly, fits me right and is ready to wear (no pilling, no wrinkles, clean and tidy). This way it is easy to get dressed quickly.
I prefer to keep my outerwear apart from my clothing.
In spring I bring down my summer clothes and store winter ones away, in autumn winter clothes come down and summer dresses are put away.
It's great to have learnt so much in such a short time. I don't have time to spend an hour on the internet so I'm glad I came across this channel. I've been a subscriber for a while. Thanks Marie-Anne🙂.

Very good advice. This is not about indulgence (donate old clothes) but about being your best.
I went through my closet two weeks ago. It is a much more pleasant place to get dressed now. I've organized the rest by color. Anything I've not worn in 90 days is also going away.

My closet is organized by colour, when I open it up it looks like a rainbow. I pick out my outfit for the next day each night, I’m way too foggy headed to do that in the morning 😊

Forgot to add to my previous post...I have pajama tops that I can wear for tops when I go out. They are a silky-smooth fabric and short sleeves, solid colors, crew neck. No one knows they are part of pajama sets. I keep the tops in my closet and the bottoms in a drawer. 😁

My bottom colors are black, navy, and beige. Bottom is arranged according to skirts, pants and jeans. Jackets are arranged according seasons and colors.Sweaters are on shelves according to seasons and colors Golf clothes are ona separate shelf. J’aime les Idées.😊

Marie-Anne, I have a question. I have a few pairs of skinny jeans with embroideries which I got a few years ago. They still fit me perfect since I I am the same size as I was in my younger years. Now I am 64 years old. Can I still wear them or get rid of them?

Wonderful video, Marie-Anne. What do you suggest as the best colors for someone with white hair and pale complexion? I’m confused, after going natural. My wardrobe is all from when I colored my hair very dark. I always wear a lovely lipstick, but I’m struggling with colors. I love navy, white, cream and black.
